"I feel like I could pull off some kind of infinite-revival exploit with Red-Eyes Black Dragon." Luke couldn’t help muttering to himself at the end. "Come to think of it, why is it that every card in the Red-Eyes series I make ends up with skills that bounce back and forth across the line between life and death?"
Shaking his head, Luke stowed Red-Eyes Black Dragon’s card away and, without pausing, buried himself in crafting once more.
This time, however, what he was making wasn’t a regular card, but a Special Card: the Swords of Revealing Light.
Compared to the far more demanding conception and construction of Blue-Eyes White Dragon, the Swords of Revealing Light was considerably easier, taking even less time than mulling over Red-Eyes Black Dragon’s reconstruction had. Luke spent roughly a day completing the background and design of this Special Card, and pushed the success rate to one hundred percent through Simulated Construction.
Now, all that remained was to actually make the card.
「 In the world of Duel Spirits, all manner of inconceivable powers exist. One of them is the power of sealing. 」
「 Legend holds that the sealing power of the Duel Spirit world originates from an ancient Sword of Light. 」
「 So long as the Sword of Light endures, enemies sealed by it cannot mount an attack, and their mobility is drastically reduced. 」
「 Card background approved. Please complete the card art and add materials. 」
With the background editing finished, Luke began crafting the Swords of Revealing Light’s card art.
Once again, his spiritual power became ink and brush. Several swords of light surfaced in a specific arrangement, composing a card image steeped in sanctity, faint runes seeming to circulate within the blades, intermittently taking shape as sealing power.
Next, the Sword of Light he’d once obtained from Harrison Cole, the card’s primary material, along with the other materials he’d prepared, was fed in turn into the Card Editor, gradually completing the full card image of the Swords of Revealing Light.
「 Construction successful. Mana backflow obtained. 」
A Special Card wasn’t a spirit card, so although this round of crafting succeeded and yielded mana backflow, it still wasn’t enough to break Luke out of the Leader Realm and into the Monarch Realm. Not that he was particularly surprised by that.
"Finally finished." Giving his head a shake to dispel a faint trace of gloom from his mind, Luke drew out the new card to examine it.
「 Swords of Revealing Light 」 Type: Equipment Card Effect: Must be actively triggered. Upon activation, summons three Swords of Revealing Light within a designated area, forming a sword formation. All enemy units inside the formation enter a sealed state, unable to launch attacks from within, with their speed reduced by 50%. When a Sword of Revealing Light is destroyed, it produces a violent explosion.
"A sealed state, unable to attack from within, and on top of that a 50% speed reduction debuff the original didn’t have. A decent restriction tool."
"It’s just that the Magic Card Civilization is reality in the end, so the Swords of Revealing Light isn’t without a counter." Enemies couldn’t attack from inside, but the Swords of Revealing Light offered little defense against attacks from the outside.
"Still, when the Swords of Revealing Light are destroyed, they trigger a violent explosion on top of everything, which compensates for that defensive shortfall to a degree." Luke figured that getting caught in such a blast, even if it didn’t kill you, would absolutely leave you in rough shape.
All things considered, Luke was fairly satisfied with the results of reconstructing Red-Eyes Black Dragon and crafting the Swords of Revealing Light.
Opening his eyes, Luke found Mana and Blanc, his two cuties, one big and one small, staring straight at him.
"What is it?" he asked, noticing.
"It’s nothing, Tamer." Blanc’s face flushed faintly, and she shrank back behind Mana. Even in front of Luke, the little thing was on the shy side.
In combat, of course, that was another matter entirely.
"Master, congratulations." Compared to Blanc, Mana was far more outgoing, which was simply her nature, and she’d spent more time around Luke besides.
The two mana fluctuations from Luke a moment ago meant that, beyond reconstructing Red-Eyes Black Dragon, his newly crafted card had succeeded as well.
"Let’s give it a try." Luke reached out and affectionately pinched Mana’s nose, and amid her indignant pout, drew out the Swords of Revealing Light and pressed it against the front of her body.
Just like the Spell Tome and his other Special Cards, the Swords of Revealing Light slowly melted into Mana, and her aura rose steadily in its wake, soon reaching a critical threshold.
「 Dark Magician Girl Mana has successfully fused the Swords of Revealing Light. Quality raised to Legendary. 」 Within a few seconds, Mana’s aura climbed to a fresh new height.
Finally bumped up to Legendary. Receiving the system prompt, Luke raised an eyebrow.
Back when she’d fused the Magic Cylinder, Dark Magician Girl’s quality had already received a boost. Now, after fusing the Swords of Revealing Light, she’d broken past her original Perfect quality and ascended to the Legendary grade.
"Six-Star Legendary. Her quality is a touch stronger than Awakened Blanc, enough to rival the pre-reconstruction Red-Eyes Black Star Dragon."
"For Mana to break past her original level, though, she’ll still need to fuse with the Eye of Timaeus or Red-Eyes Black Dragon. Her own base attributes alone won’t keep pace with the steadily escalating intensity of combat."
"In that case, crafting the Loaded Cylinder Magazine and the Chaos Ritual should be moved up the agenda." Luke mused quietly.
The Loaded Cylinder Magazine, paired with the Magic Cylinder, would further raise Dark Magician Girl’s counterattack strength and counterattack ceiling. The Chaos Ritual, meanwhile, was something Luke intended to model on Chaos Dark Magician, a patch of sorts for Dark Magician Girl. Rather than fusing with another card spirit, it would raise her own strength through the ritual’s effect, a way to shore up Mana’s comparatively weak baseline strength.
"Mana’s situation can rest there for now. The second card, Red-Eyes Black Dragon, has finished reconstruction, but that isn’t the endpoint either. Further down the line there’s the Red-Eyes Darkness Metal Dragon and the Red-Eyes Undead Dragon Emperor, both higher-tier terminals."
"And then Blue-Eyes White Dragon, and Kisara. Going by the process of reconstructing Red-Eyes Black Dragon just now, the strain of crafting high-level cards isn’t what it was at the start. But this card’s circumstances are rather special, so the background and design will take some careful thought."
Kisara, the soul of Blue-Eyes White Dragon. That was the root of why Luke planned to put a degree of modification into his construction of Blue-Eyes White Dragon.
"On the Digimon card front, I’ll also need to start preparing the X-Antibody evolution cards. An X-Antibody applicable to Digimon across their various stages would be enough to bump the strength of the Digimon cards up an entire level."
"Beyond the X-Antibody evolution cards, the Mega evolution cards are something to consider too." At the thought, Luke rubbed his head. "Mesh evolution lets a Digimon adapt to different environments and raise its strength. Extrapolating from Blanc to Noir to Angewomon, a Mega-tier Digimon might reach Nine-Star, which is the very apex of high-tier cards."
"And on top of all that, there’s the Warship World and the shipgirl cards!"
"Pfft. The exam’s over and done with, and yet I somehow still have a whole pile of things to deal with." In the end, Luke heaved a sigh.
