Chapter 268: Chapter 236: Atavistic Wolf Green
The black dog squatted obediently on the ground, while Yu Dalin held a shovel aloft, looking like he might bring it down on the dog’s head at any moment.
This was blatant emotional blackmail.
Chen Fang was so furious she started cursing him out.
Yu Dalin, with a shameless look on his face, cursed right back.
He swore in some local dialect, a torrent of gibberish that was just as foul.
But he never lowered the shovel in his hand. Finally, he said, "Five hundred. You buy the dog, or I’ll beat it to death!"
Chen Fang was shaking with rage. She looked around for a makeshift weapon, but finding none, she turned to go into a room to search for one, yelling, "Don’t you dare move! I’m not finished with you today!"
Li Jiahui quickly stopped her.
Shen Xin also stepped forward immediately, signaling for them both to calm down.
"Sir, this isn’t right. I’m a police officer. Let’s talk about this calmly."
Shen Xin quickly revealed his identity.
Yu Dalin’s expression changed in a flash. He shouted doubtfully, "You’re really a cop? Then how come you’re not in uniform? And where’s your police car?"
Shen Xin immediately pulled out his badge. "Sir, I really am an officer. Look closely, this is my identification."
"Also, you can’t do this. What you’re doing is borderline extortion."
Yu Dalin took a step closer to get a clear look at the ID in Shen Xin’s hand.
Shen Xin keenly noticed that the expression on his face wasn’t surprise, nor fear, but... ’Excitement?’
His eyes darted around, and he immediately changed his tune. "Chen Fang, let’s just forget it for today. Since a cop is here, I won’t stoop to your level. Just you wait. I’ll be back."
With that, he tugged on the dog’s leash and turned to leave.
Shen Xin frowned slightly. ’That old man’s reaction was a bit strange.’
After watching Yu Dalin leave, Shen Xin turned to ask Chen Fang what was going on.
Chen Fang was still fuming, her chest heaving with anger. She grumbled, "That indecent old coot. He just saw that I was here alone today and thought I was an easy target. When my husband gets back, I’m going to have it out with him."
Shen Xin quickly urged her to calm down.
Making a scene would just cause more trouble.
"Let’s not talk about him, it’s infuriating. Officer Shen, thank you. If you hadn’t been here, who knows what he would have done."
Chen Fang thanked him as she went to close the gate.
Then, she enthusiastically pulled the two of them along for a tour of the shelter.
She pointed proudly at the cats and dogs before them and explained, "My shelter has over a hundred dogs at any given time, and lots of cats. You have no idea just how many stray cats and dogs there are in this city."
"Especially cats. They have several in a litter, and no sooner has one litter been born than they’re pregnant again. The mother cats can’t even feed themselves, let alone the kittens."
"It’s pretty much the same with dogs. I’m a bit more well-known, so a lot of people who rescue strays end up bringing them to me."
"My biggest headache right now is finding homes for all these cats and dogs. If you could take a batch off my hands, I’d be truly grateful."
She thanked them again.
Shen Xin quickly told her not to mention it, saying she was doing a great thing.
He had just followed her on a tour.
She had rented this large yard herself. Inside, there was a row of five rooms: a medical clinic, a storage room, and a kitchen. She and her husband lived in the smallest one.
Despite the cold weather, they didn’t even have air conditioning.
But she had cleared out one room and installed an air conditioner specifically for the kittens and puppies.
The storage room was also piled high with cat and dog food, and she even cooked meals for the dogs.
She used frozen chicken heads, chicken frames, and the like, which was already quite good.
With over a hundred dogs, the expenses were considerable.
Furthermore, it was just her and her husband handling the daily work. Taking care of so many dogs was no easy task.
So, the fact that she had been able to keep this up for so long and take such good care of the cats and dogs was truly remarkable.
Chen Fang quickly waved her hand dismissively. Looking at the crowd of cats and dogs through the fence, she said, "Some things... if you don’t do them, and I don’t do them, then who will?"
"As for me, I just happen to love these cats and dogs, so I made up my mind to just be the one to do it."
"I only have one son, and he’s working abroad now. I don’t even get to see him once in a few years. So it works out. I just treat these dogs and cats as my children, and it’s quite nice."
With that, she asked Li Jiahui what her selection criteria were.
Li Jiahui looked at Shen Xin and said, "You do it."
Shen Xin didn’t refuse. He opened the gate to the free-roaming area and stepped inside.
Shen Xin beckoned to the nearest Golden Retriever.
It didn’t move, only watched Shen Xin warily.
Shen Xin made a few soft clicking sounds to call it over.
The surrounding dogs were also drawn by the sound.
But just like the Golden Retriever, none of them came closer. They just stood at a distance, watching him.
Only a mutt and a ridiculously ugly Husky mix slowly approached Shen Xin.
Shen Xin was puzzled.
’I used my ultimate, so how did it only do this little bit of damage?’
’Back at the police dog academy, a few soft clicks were enough to make dozens of puppies go silent all at once.’
’The sight was so impressive.’
’Why isn’t it working so well now?’
Shen Xin crouched down and beckoned to the Golden Retriever again.
’It must be because the dogs have different experiences.’
’The puppies at the academy were bred over generations from the most human-friendly dogs.’
’They also received socialization training from a young age, so they were naturally very friendly.’
’But these dogs here were all rescues.’
’They must have been strays or been abused, so it’s understandable that they’re wary of humans.’
’But even the strays at the pound reacted better than these dogs. After a few clicks, some of them even showed an icon.’
’With these ones, though? Not a single one.’
The Golden Retriever’s reaction was still very cautious, but it slowly let its guard down and crept a little closer.
