Chapter 141: Chapter 141 Unraveling Threads
Author
The next day, Alpha Zack drove back to the Vance estate. Something about yesterday’s brief encounter with that maid wouldn’t leave him alone.
He spotted an older servant dusting in the hallway. "Excuse me." The woman looked up. "I’m trying to find one of the maids from yesterday. Brown hair, about this tall?" He gestured. "She was cleaning near the stairs. I think I dropped something."
The servant nodded. "Oh, that’s Cassie. But she’s not—"
"Zack!" Selina’s voice rang out from behind him.
He turned to see her practically glowing with excitement.
She’d clearly gotten dolled up - fresh makeup, a flattering dress, hair perfectly styled. The kind of effort that usually meant someone had romantic intentions.
When Selina had heard Alpha Zack was here, she’d practically sprinted upstairs.
Finally! He’d come back to see her. She’d spent twenty minutes making herself look perfect, practicing her most charming smile in the mirror.
Now she was floating down the stairs like she was making a grand entrance, already planning how to be irresistible.
But the moment she got close enough to hear their conversation, her fantasy crashed and burned.
"Selina, I think I dropped something yesterday. That maid Cassie might have found it."
"Oh, Cassie?" She let out a laugh that came out way too high and shrill. "She took some personal time off. Family emergency back home."
Alpha Zack ’s eyes sharpened slightly. There was something off about Selina’s body language - the way she couldn’t quite meet his eyes, the nervous energy radiating from her.
"What did you lose? Is it important?" Her voice climbed higher with each word, betraying her anxiety.
She took a step closer, her eyes wide with fake concern. "Did she steal it? Oh my god, I knew we shouldn’t trust some of these people! I’ll call her right now and make her bring it back immediately!"
Alpha Zack had only wanted to talk to the woman, not get her fired. "No need. It’s not that important. It’s probably just in one of my jacket pockets."
"Really, Selina, don’t worry about it."
After they finished eating, Alpha Zack left the Vance estate. His mind was spinning.
[I only asked one question yesterday, and today that maid is suddenly gone. Am I being paranoid?]
--
Elara stared at their bedroom floor.
Rose petals covered everything, spreading in thick romantic layers all the way to the huge bed.
Linda had already gone home for the night, so she couldn’t ask her to clean this up.
Alpha Dominic was leaning against the headboard, glowing in soft golden light.
The silk sheets hung loosely around his waist, leaving his whole upper body bare. The warm lamplight showed off every muscle in his chest and abs, creating shadows that made him look like he belonged on a magazine cover.
His eyes drifted toward her, slow and purposeful. His voice came out rougher than usual. "Ready for bed?"
Elara forced herself to look away, her face getting hot.
"Oh, sorry." Alpha Dominic ’s tone changed, though she could see he was trying not to laugh. "I meant, should I turn off the lights so we can sleep?"
Elara felt like he was making it worse by explaining.
"I should get a broom and clean some of this up," she said quickly, desperate to break the tension. "Otherwise, if I need the bathroom tonight, I’ll trip over all these petals in the dark."
Alpha Dominic looked at her like his romantic plan was totally backfiring.
Then Elara’s phone rang, killing whatever mood was left.
Elara carefully walked through the thick carpet of rose petals to her dresser and grabbed her buzzing phone.
"Hello? Who is this?" The screen showed a number she didn’t recognize.
"It’s me. Zack."
Alpha Zack had changed his number again. He’d just gotten this new number yesterday, and Elara hadn’t had time to block it yet.
"Don’t hang up," he said quickly, words tumbling out. "I need to ask you something."
Elara’s finger hovered over the red button. "What?"
His voice came through urgent and breathless: "Elara, were you the girl who got locked in that storage room years ago?"
Her finger froze mid-air. Why was he asking this now? What game was he playing?
"Does it matter?"
There was silence on the other end.
"I’m hanging up. And don’t call me again. I’m blocking every number you get."
Click.
Alpha Zack stared at his phone, the dial tone mocking him. He ran a hand through his hair, frustrated. Still no real answer. Just more questions.
Alpha Dominic ’s eyes got dangerous. Jealousy hit him hard and fast. "Luna Wolfe, please tell me that wasn’t your annoying ex-mate calling you again."
