Chapter 310: A Building With Doors
The command house opened its repaired eastern doors on the sixth morning after Flint’s capitulation.
Those doors completed work funded before Dreth’s cavalry reached the watchposts, then repaired again after contract assassins entered through the unfinished roof. The route hall kept its old scars beneath fresh braces instead of pretending the war had missed it.
Across the square, the regional guildhall opened from a construction order carrying the same weeks-old date. Its stone foundation had risen during the blockade, while carpenters finished the interior around battle shifts plus shelter repairs.
Hajin crossed between both entrances with every Ring closed beneath his sleeve. Vella had removed the outer chest bandage that morning, although she still prohibited channeling through the two pathways injured inside Dreth’s Zone.
The Stolen Moment’s fixed twenty-four-hour cooldown had ended days earlier, returning the sealed watch to available status without changing his recovery.

Marrick refused a ceremonial ribbon because people were already waiting beneath both entrances. He opened the command house register, recorded both buildings fit for use, and ordered the doors held wide.
The first room inside the guildhall contained a proper contract desk staffed by one transferred guild clerk plus two local trainees. Adventurers could register regional work, file Gate sightings, receive road warnings, or report missing parties without traveling to the capital.
Cassie entered beside Tessa while Jonas plus Toby carried their party equipment toward the desk. Her sister remained thin beneath Toby’s coat, but she chose her own chair before a clinic worker brought breakfast.
The rear guildhall rooms held temporary beds for people leaving Flint collection estates or damaged border homes. Nobody surrendered property by sleeping there, and every resident received a numbered storage chest with their own key.
Vella claimed the adjoining room for clinic overflow before anyone could assign it another purpose. Nine clean frames stood inside, separated from the sleeping quarters by a door that closed against noise plus treatment light.
"This room receives stable patients only," she told the guild clerk, checking the wash basin, "anyone with a failing core goes directly to Mara’s main clinic."
"I wrote clinic overflow above the door," the clerk replied, showing her the brass plate, "nobody can rent it for party meetings."
Vella accepted the plate after testing both hinges herself for the second time. Her violet reserve remained depleted, while gold healing still required touch after the foreign lattice used during battle.
The command house carried the work that could not remain inside a public hall. Lana’s restored Witness Office occupied the rebuilt eastern wing with two secure record cabinets plus a service hatch facing the square.
One secured cabinet held restitution claims plus Flint audit copies from opened estates. The other held casualty records, custody chains, surrender terms, plus complaints against guards or officials under the same access rules.
Workers leaving collection estates brought copied sleeve numbers toward the restitution desk throughout the morning. Lana recorded withheld wages, missing release dates, seized property, and altered names as separate claims without declaring any amount proven.
Uriel’s civil office could issue food, shelter, or protected transport while those records remained open. Compensation still required traced accounts, preventing one recovered ledger from becoming another promise nobody could pay.
Lana posted two daily petition hours beside the hatch instead of requiring residents to approach Hajin’s route table. Ash sat beneath the notice with its chalk in both hands, adding one line nobody had authorized.
"He wrote food," Lana said, examining the uneven mark below her schedule, "that is not a petition hour."
"It might be his petition," Hajin replied, taking the chalk before Ash reached the wall again, "Marrick can schedule it after lunch."
Ash accepted the answer when Juna gave him a bread roll from the opening table. No halo, Ringlet, unknown designation, or mountain response appeared while he ate beneath the new office plate.
The former manor’s route hall became a paid militia planning room rather than a noble reception chamber. Hans pinned duty rotations beside wage rates, ensuring nobody could hide unpaid service beneath emergency language now that the battle had ended.
Its western alcove stored custody schedules for Flint officers, while ordinary surrendered soldiers remained listed by company plus treatment status. The final reconciled field ledger stayed unchanged inside the cabinet behind Lana’s seal.
Upstairs messenger bunks continued serving runners, and the largest room still lacked the expensive furniture proposed before the siege. Marrick placed six temporary refugee beds inside it, leaving one smaller dry room at the corridor’s end for Hajin.
Juna found the old construction ledger Marrick had preserved beneath that room’s key. Her crossed-out bedroom mark remained beside the first allocation, where Hajin had funded evacuation roads plus stores before spending anything upon himself.
"You kept one room this time," she said, turning the key between two claws, "should I check whether Marrick trapped you inside the budget?"
"He probably listed it as command recovery space," Hajin replied, checking the unadorned door, "calling it mine would have cost another form."
The guild courier arrived before midday while the public desks remained busy. He waited behind two petitioners instead of clearing the hall, then presented Hajin with a sealed status summons beside the contract desk.
{Royal Guild Postwar Status Review.}
{Subject: Lord Hajin / current provisional placement #96.}
{Required appearance: second morning after regional guildhall opening.}
{Review scope: Flint campaign, Dreth Zone engagement, fourth Ring manifestation, current threat placement, and regional authority record.}
The attached witness request named Hans, Cassie, Juna, Loccy, registered guild observers, plus battlefield record custodians. It separated inner-mountain testimony from outside Gate witnesses instead of claiming anyone saw through the opaque surface.
"Do they want the badge returned with the records," Hajin asked, showing the courier the provisional number, "or are they pretending ninety-six might survive the meeting?"
"Bring the badge in your hand," the courier replied, entering delivery time on both copies, "the hearing decides what leaves with you."
Marrick accepted the records request without closing the public opening or moving anyone aside. He assigned copies from existing ledgers, leaving original custody, casualty, and witness documents inside their secured cabinets.
By evening, the guild desk had registered three road contracts plus two missing-animal notices. The Witness Office had accepted four petitions, while Hans’s militia room posted its first paid peacetime rotation.
No throne occupied the command house route hall after every public desk closed. Its largest table remained the salvaged manor door used during the counter-offensive, now surrounded by clerks, runners, audit boxes, plus people who knew why each route existed.
Juna found Hajin upstairs after the public doors changed to night access. He stood inside the small room at the corridor’s end, where one bed plus an empty weapons stand constituted every personal furnishing.
The open window faced the guildhall, clinic roof, eastern forge, and road leading toward Gold Mountain. Lamps remained lit behind doors people could enter without receiving a noble invitation.
"The hearing takes us back to the capital," Juna said, placing the room key in Hajin’s palm, "afterward, we come back here."
"You called it my territory when we arrived," he replied, closing his hand around the key, "now you are deciding where both of us return."
"I helped hold it," she said, leaning one shoulder against his, "I am allowed to know where home is."
Hajin rested his shoulder against hers without naming anything beyond what she had already chosen. Her tail curved around his wrist while the guildhall’s night door opened below for another clinic patient.
