Chapter 305: Dreth’s End
The first Flint officers reached the surrender lane while Dreth remained upright beyond the trench. Eighteen seconds circled Hajin’s wrist as four dark-gold Rings, each rotation pulling against pathways that had already begun to tear.
Hans crossed behind a militia shield while two recorders pushed empty weapon carts beside him. Captains placed their company rolls on the first cart, then ordered soldiers to stack blades beside standards laid flat on the ground.
"The terms cover every soldier who stays disarmed," Hans called, keeping his sword sheathed, "the wounded receive treatment, while officers enter separate custody until their records are reviewed."
No Flint captain looked toward the broken command ridge for permission before giving the next order. Their remaining soldiers moved into marked groups as militia recorders counted them from outside spear range.
A covered white lamp appeared behind the southern shields as two escorts opened a narrow path. Uriel walked beneath it, carrying the household seal hidden through the battle.
Dreth noticed her white lamp before looking at the surrender rolls again. His hand left the burned opening in his breastplate, revealing ash-white cracks spreading from his core through the skin beneath his throat.
"You brought my blood here to witness this," he said, pressing the broken spear into the ground, "then she can witness what surrender purchases."
"It purchases survival for people you already spent," Hajin replied, watching the cracks widen, "step away from them."
Dreth pulled the half spear from the dirt without raising its broken point toward Hajin.
Instead, he turned toward the surrender group carrying wounded prisoners between stacks.
[ Four-Ring manifestation: 15 seconds remaining ]
The first captain shoved two soldiers away when their former commander crossed the ridge. Militia shields closed around the lane, but wounded Flint troops were still being carried between the weapon stacks.
Divine Eye passed through Dreth’s damaged plate and traced the channels hidden behind it. His burned core had folded every remaining channel inward, creating a closed rupture circuit where his Zone socket had connected to earth.
[ Forced core rupture detected ]
[ Estimated lethal radius: 46 paces ]
[ Rupture completion: 9 seconds ]
The radius covered three surrender groups, both weapon carts, and the first line of wounded prisoners. Dreth had no route left through the ground, so he was turning his own body into the final anchor.
"Break formation and run south," Hans ordered, pulling the nearest captain behind his shield, "leave the weapons where they are."
Seven hundred people could not clear a forty-six-pace circle in nine seconds. Those at the center had already dropped their weapons, while several wounded could not stand without help.
Hajin crossed the trench before the closest militia shield could turn toward him.
Four Rings drove strength through his legs, breaking the ridge beneath his first step. The Chain followed from his right hand as Dreth forced ash into every cracked channel around his core.
"They were mine before they were yours," Dreth said, opening both arms as the rupture reached his throat, "I decide what remains."
"You decided enough," Hajin replied, entering the white light, "this one is mine."
[ Four-Ring manifestation: 7 seconds remaining ]
[ Rupture completion: 4 seconds ]
Dreth swung the broken spear across Hajin’s approach. The point scraped Aegis from his left forearm, spending the last strength in the commander’s shoulder without stopping the next step.
The Chain wrapped once around Dreth’s spear arm before its links locked above the elbow. Hajin pulled him away from the surrender lane, then drove his left palm against the exposed break in the breastplate.
Divine Sever entered the rupture circuit without crossing the rest of his body. Gold cut every inward channel together, trapping the gathered ash inside a core that could no longer complete its collapse.
Dreth tried to close both arms around him despite the Chain pinning one elbow behind him. Hajin released the severing edge, seized the Chain near its first link, and drove the dark-gold point through the open plate.
The tip passed through the burned core before emerging beneath Dreth’s shoulder blade. Ash burst from his mouth instead of the surrender lane, scattering across Aegis as harmless sparks.
Hajin held the Chain in place until Divine Eye showed every rupture channel going dark.
Dreth’s remaining hand caught Hajin’s sleeve beside the blood soaking through it. The grip lasted one breath before the broken spear fell, followed by the man who had refused to put it down.
[ Dreth eliminated ]
[ Valid combat reward: 1,200,000 EXP ]
[ Ring 5 Progress: 26,200,000 / 50,000,000 EXP ]
[ No Ring evolution available ]
The fourth Ring completed its final rotation as Hajin pulled the Chain free. Its outer halo stopped beside his wrist, then folded into the dark-gold mark beneath the other three.
[ First four-Ring manifestation ended ]
[ Fourth Ring: unlocked ]
[ Pathway recovery required ]
The remaining three Rings disappeared when Hajin closed his hand around the Chain. No strength returned with the reward, and the wound beneath his coat continued leaking through the bandage.
Hans reached the body first, checking the ruined core before raising one white board over his head. Across the field, Flint soldiers who had broken formation stopped running when no detonation followed.
"Dreth is dead and the surrender terms remain in force," he announced, pointing the second board toward the abandoned lanes, "return without touching a weapon."
The captains repeated Hans’s order until it reached every broken section of the field. Soldiers came back by company, leaving a clear strip around Dreth while militia teams restored the count from the rolls already surrendered.
Uriel entered the lane after both escorts tested the ground ahead of her. She uncovered the white lamp, set it beside the first stack, and pressed the Flint household seal into the captain’s open ledger.
"I recognize these rolls as the remaining Flint field companies," she said, keeping the seal on the page, "their capitulation is voluntary, witnessed, and offered under the stated protection."
Hans placed his militia stamp beside Uriel’s seal before she lifted her hand. The two marks covered separate halves of the same entry, preventing either household authority or Sixth command from changing the terms alone.
"The Sixth accepts all seven hundred four armed surrenders," he said, turning the open ledger so the captains could see both marks, "custody begins now under the terms already spoken."
[ Field capitulation formally accepted: 704 ]
Militia custody teams entered through three marked lanes after the captains cleared each approach. They bound officers by company, searched each one in view of their soldiers, and attached the matching roll to every custody cord.
Ordinary troops received numbered cloth strips after their weapons were counted and stacked. Anyone with a damaged core or open wound entered a separate treatment line without losing the number assigned to their company.
Mara sent empty litters toward the sixty-one soldiers Dreth had drained earlier. Nineteen carried stabilization marks from Hajin plus Vella, while the other forty-two remained under constant core-failure watch.
"Treatment order follows survival risk, not uniform," Mara told both sets of stretcher crews, checking the first prisoner’s pulse, "bring me the silent ones before they become names on either death roll."
No one argued while Dreth’s body lay between the broken ridge and the surrendered standards.
Uriel removed her seal from the ledger, leaving its impression beside Hans’s stamp. She gave the completed page to a militia runner, then opened the next company roll beneath the white lamp.
The first runner crossed the permanent trench toward Lana’s damaged registry with the capitulation page protected beneath his coat. Behind him, custody teams opened the next weapon stack as another Flint officer placed both hands behind his back.
