Chapter 253: Solar Vanguard, Practical Use
Juna found the next pack moving through ridge grass above the field lane while the village families passed beneath them.
Twelve hounds spread across the slope without charging, following blood from Vella’s carts instead of the louder militia checkpoint.
Two more scents remained behind the ridge, where Dreth’s observers watched the evacuation road from outside bow range.
Juna could reach the men before their horses turned, though doing that left the carts below without warning.
She dropped into the field lane beside Elise, landing ahead of the frame carrying Garret.
"Pack above us," Juna said, pointing toward the ridge without looking away, "keep the carts together and stop anyone running into the grass."
Elise raised a light marker over the lane, showing the drivers where the irrigation cut narrowed ahead.
"I can take the observers," she said, keeping her sword near her side, "they will keep recording if nobody pushes them off the ridge."
"Let them watch me stay here," Juna said, moving between the pack and the first clinic cart, "the road matters more than two reports."
One pale-gold Wing opened behind her, sending Solar Vanguard markings along both forearms without reaching her throat.
The power sharpened every scent across the field, pulling her attention toward each moving body above the lane.
She kept her feet beneath her instead of following the strongest trail, holding the transformation where she had practiced it.
The lead hound entered the grass line before the rest, using the irrigation bank to hide its approach from the drivers.
Juna released one short gold line from her claws, cutting its front leg without touching the cart beyond it.
The monster rolled into the lane as Elise drove her sword through the growth covering its shoulder.
"Keep moving," Juna said, looking toward the first driver, "the Wing stays on the ridge side, so take the carts past my left."
Vella’s convoy moved behind her while the remaining hounds split toward both ends of the lane.
Four descended near the rear frames, forcing village hunters to turn their bows across families still walking between them.
"Lower the bows," Juna said, crossing the convoy in one jump, "you will hit the road before they reach us."
She landed outside the rear cart, striking two hounds with separate gold cuts before their feet touched the lane.
The first cut opened a shoulder joint, while the second removed the purple growth covering another monster’s eyes.
Sable reached the blinded hound from behind the frames, ending it before its claws found the closest wheel.
The injured monster tried retreating uphill, dragging Juna’s hunting instinct toward the blood trail it left behind.
She folded the Wing closer instead of chasing, returning to the lane while village hunters finished it with spears.
Three hounds rushed the front cart during her turn, finding Elise’s light barrier across the narrow irrigation gap. Their bodies struck together, giving the driver time to move the wagon beyond the crossing before the barrier failed.
Juna reached them after the impact, using one claw line across their legs instead of cutting through the packed bodies.
All three fell inside the ditch where militia spears could reach them without leaving the road.
"The lane behind us is clear," Elise said, looking toward the ridge observers, "but they marked every place you crossed."
"Ignore them," Juna said, keeping the Wing open as another scent entered the lower field, "six families are still coming from the checkpoint."
Hans had sent them beyond the damaged village before the second burrower left the storehouse, but their carrying frames moved slower than the carts.
The remaining hounds changed direction toward those frames, finding the people who could not retreat at the convoy’s pace.
Juna ran along the field edge rather than through the families, keeping every gold strike aimed away from the road. Her Wing wanted to widen as the pack grouped below her, pulling Solar markings past her elbows toward both shoulders.
She stopped the spread before it reached her neck, releasing the stored power through three narrow cuts across the slope.
Each line struck one hound near the legs, leaving the families untouched while the pack lost its downhill speed.
The frame crews passed beneath her position as village hunters covered the injured monsters from the rear.
One hound broke through the spear line, jumping toward the headman’s wrapped arm while he walked beside the last family.
Juna caught it by the throat before its body crossed the road, driving it into the irrigation bank without opening another Wing.
The impact cracked the purple growth along its spine, allowing the headman to finish it with his remaining spear.
"That arm should be on a frame," Juna said, looking toward the wrap Vella had tied, "you have hunters who can walk without bleeding."
"They have families on the road," he said, checking the people behind him, "I get on a frame after the last one passes."
Juna heard the strain beneath his answer without arguing, moving him behind the frame crews where the hounds could not reach first.
Hajin came down from the ravine as the last family entered the marked lane, leaving Aegis angled across the Gate spill above.
One Ring rotated around his wrist while purple blood dried along the chain held in his other hand.
"The next pack is forming inside the portal," he said, stopping beside Juna without stepping into her position, "where do you need me?"
"Keep them off the ravine," she said, pointing toward the Gate with one claw, "I have the field road until every frame reaches town."
He checked the open Wing plus the markings held below her shoulders, finding no loss of control in either.
"Call if the lane splits," Hajin said, returning uphill without assigning anyone to stand beside her.
Juna faced the ridge again, choosing the lower road where her power had less room but more people to protect.
Dreth’s observers moved farther from the edge after Hajin left, keeping their distance while continuing to mark the carts.
She ignored their horses until a new scent appeared below them, carrying lamp oil from the bridge riders instead of Gate corruption.
"Elise," Juna said, keeping her Wing toward the field, "two vanguard men are moving around the ridge behind the convoy."
"Do you want me on them?" Elise asked, lowering the light marker as the final cart cleared the irrigation cut.
"Watch them," Juna said, following both scents without turning, "Sable stays with the frames until Vella reaches the next shelter."
Another group of hounds entered the lower drainage channel, moving beneath the ridge where her gold lines could not reach safely.
Their scent followed Garret’s blood toward the clinic wagon now stopped near the next shelter post.
Juna shifted toward the channel before seeing Vella step away from the treatment cart with violet mana covering both hands.
"Keep the road," Vella said, moving between the wounded and the approaching shapes, "these came for my patients."
Juna held her position beside the final frame as the drainage grass began moving toward Vella.
