Chapter 239: The Clinic Does Not Flinch
Vella finished wrapping the ridge boy’s ankle, then sent the clinic cart toward the quarry village with Hajin holding the supply crates in place. The village had cleared its grain store for her visit, moving the last sacks aside before laying six cots beneath the open shutters.
Two fever patients waited near the door, while a quarry miner occupied the rear cot with his left arm bound against a board.
His wife knelt beside him with both hands around a water cup, watching gray veins spread above the bandage.
"The quarry healer closed the cut," she moved aside as Vella approached, "but the fever started before we reached home."
Vella removed the bandage, exposing a sealed wound near the elbow where something dark pressed beneath the skin.
"A core fragment is still inside," she held two fingers above the swelling, "the healer closed it against the bone."
"Can you remove it?" the miner kept his jaw tight as another tremor passed through his arm.
"Yes, but ordinary healing will feed the fragment," Vella opened her case, "so I need everyone behind the next cot."
The wife obeyed until violet mana gathered around Vella’s fingertips, carrying the demonic pressure she could no longer hide.
Her shoulders pulled back before she caught herself, though one foot still moved away from the cot. Vella noticed the step, covering it by reaching for a narrow iron probe without looking at anyone.
"You can wait outside," she checked the probe’s edge, "the treatment will take several minutes."
"I am staying with him," the woman returned to the cot, though her eyes remained on Vella’s hand.
Hajin carried the youngest fever patient from the waiting bench, placing the child on the empty cot beside Vella.
"Her breathing changed on the road," he kept one hand beneath the girl’s shoulders, "tell me where you need her."
She looked at him before shifting the miner’s board toward the center of the room.
"Keep the girl on her side," she placed the probe against the sealed wound, "then hold this man’s shoulder when the fragment moves."
He took position beside her without asking about the violet mana, leaving the miner’s wife to hold the water cup near his head.
Golden healing entered the arm first, opening the skin without tearing the muscle Vella needed to preserve.
The dark shape beneath it reacted at once, pushing gray veins toward the miner’s shoulder while his back lifted from the cot.
Hajin held him down as Vella drove the probe into the wound, following the fragment until metal struck something near the bone.
"It has roots," she turned the probe while violet mana followed its length, "so pulling now would leave half inside."
The miner’s wife swallowed before asking, "What does the violet part do?"
"It destroys foreign mana," she kept the probe steady, "but I have to separate it from his first."
Her power spread through the arm in narrow threads, surrounding each gray vein before drawing them back toward the wound.
The miner screamed once, forcing Hajin to brace his shoulder while the cot legs scraped across the floor.
Vella tightened the circle around the fragment, cutting every root until the dark piece tore free against the probe.
It struck the iron tray, then released a black spike toward the nearest fever cot before anyone moved.
Violet mana formed a flat barrier between the cots, catching the spike several feet from the child. She closed her hand, crushing the trapped mana until the room lost the pressure that had followed it.
The miner’s wife stared at the barrier while Vella returned to the open wound without waiting for a reaction.
"The fragment is out," she drew golden mana through the damaged muscle, "give him the water before he bites through his tongue."
The woman lifted the cup with shaking hands, keeping her husband still while the gray veins faded from his shoulder.
Vella sealed the wound from the bone outward, leaving a narrow line where the quarry healer had closed it too early.
"He rests for three days," she cleaned the probe inside a basin, "and he does not return to the quarry until I check the arm."
"We cannot lose three days of pay," the miner forced the words out through his breathing.
Hajin looked toward the village headman before replying, "The clinic records it as an injury shift, so Marrick pays the same rate from the quarry account."
The miner stopped arguing, letting his wife pull the blanket over him while Vella moved toward the fever child.
Her violet barrier remained between the cots, though its surface had thinned until the open shutters showed through it.
The girl’s mother stood near the door, holding both arms against herself as Vella checked the child’s throat.
"The fever reached her lungs," she drew a line of golden mana across the girl’s chest, "I can clear it before tonight."
The mother watched the violet barrier dissolve before asking, "Will you need that power again?"
Vella closed her case around the dark fragment, keeping her face turned toward the latch.
"Only if something tries to hurt her," she moved the child’s hair away from her mouth, "the healing stays gold."
Hajin remained beside the cot, holding the girl steady while Vella cleared the fluid from her lungs.
Her first full breath brought a cough, then another before the tight sound beneath her ribs disappeared. The mother reached for her daughter, looking at the child’s face instead of Vella’s hands as she thanked them both.
More villagers entered once the miner sat upright, filling the waiting bench without leaving when Vella opened her case again.
The quarry headman moved two guards outside the grain store, then ordered a second water barrel brought before the next treatment started.
Vella worked through every cot until the supply crates were empty, sending written instructions back with each family.
Hajin loaded the last case onto the cart while she washed the probes, keeping the dark fragment sealed inside an iron jar.
"I hate when they watch my hands before the patient," she folded a stained cloth over the basin, "I know why they do it, but I still hate it."
"She was scared," Hajin closed the supply case, "then she came back and carried your basin through four treatments."
"And you?" She kept her eyes on the cloth.
"I know it is still you," he lifted the case onto the cart, "nothing about that changed after the Gate."
Vella looked toward the grain store, where the fever girl’s mother waited beneath the new clinic notice with her daughter asleep against her chest.
She wrung the cloth into the basin, then handed him the sealed jar without covering the violet mana around her fingers.
The headman brought Vella a key for the grain store, keeping his attention on the treatment schedule while she added it to her clinic ring.
