Chapter 214: Ash
Juna had been pacing the registry floor since breakfast, wearing a line into the boards between the window and the map table.
"They sat on that ridge for hours and we’re doing nothing about it," she repeated for the third time this morning, her tail flicking with every turn, "I can track them, the trail east is barely a day old."
"And then what, we drag two men off their horses on a public road?" Hajin asked from his chair, not looking up from Marrick’s supply lists, "they watched a mine dig ore, so let them ride home and report that the broke region suddenly has soldiers, walls, and gold, because fear does half our work if we let it travel."
She stopped pacing to glare at him, which was when a low sound rolled through the room, small but unmistakable.
The boy stood on the window bench with both hands on the sill, staring out at the empty morning street and growling at nothing anyone else could see. It was the first sound he had made that was neither a giggle nor the word daddy, and it raised the hair on Hajin’s arms.
"He’s copying me," Juna realized, her ears dropping as her anger drained out mid-breath, "he felt me getting worked up, so now he thinks something outside needs to be growled at."
"Then stop getting worked up," Hajin said, watching her cross the room and scoop the boy off the bench without being bitten, which apparently the mood had earned her, "you’ll teach him the whole region is a threat before he can walk properly."
Marrick cleared his throat from behind the ledger desk, having waited out the argument with patience.
"Speaking of the little one, my lord, there is a small administrative matter," he opened the census book and turned it around, tapping an empty line under the household entries, "every soul in the region gets a registry line, and I have him recorded as ward of the lord, but a ward still requires a name."
The chat, which had been dozing through the supply lists, woke up all at once.

"No," Hajin told the air without looking up from the lists, which sent the comments scrolling twice as fast.
He spent the rest of the day not thinking about it on purpose, because that was how it had worked every time before. Juna’s name had come out of his mouth before his brain got involved, feeling less like an invention and more like handing something back to her.
Loccy’s had arrived the same way with his hand on a flickering thigh, and Vella’s had surfaced from somewhere deeper than thought while a nameless woman cried in a field of flowers.
Forcing it had never been part of the process, so he carried the boy up to the eastern wall at dusk and waited.
The peak stood black against the last of the light, and the boy watched it from his chest the way he always did, quiet and unblinking, like some part of him was still up there. Hajin found himself back in that cavern without deciding to go, standing over the bed of gold ore, seeing what he had barely registered at the time.
The shells came back to him first, a whole clutch of them broken open around the one egg that still held light. Every fragment had been gray under a coat of ash, settled there years before he ever climbed that mountain.
However many brothers and sisters the boy was supposed to have, only he had come out of that ash still burning.
"Ash," he said quietly, the name leaving him the same way the other three had, already belonging to the boy before the sound finished.
The boy went still against his chest, then pulled back to look up at him with those unblinking eyes, and something under his collar pulsed once with faint gold light. The markings across his small chest lit and faded in a single heartbeat, gone before Hajin could even open his mouth.

"Aria, he’s not a summon," he said slowly, watching the last of the glow die out, "so what exactly just logged that?"
"I genuinely don’t know," she admitted from his shoulder, pausing in a way she never had before, "the record didn’t come from me, something accepted the name, and it wasn’t my architecture."
He stared at the dark peak for a long moment, filing the question next to the light in the rock, in a drawer that was getting uncomfortably full.
"Ash," the boy said.
Hajin looked down at the small hand patting its own chest, the boy wearing the proudest expression his face had produced yet. He said it again louder, staring up without blinking until the word got an answer.
"Ash."
"Yeah," he agreed, his mouth pulling sideways despite everything in the drawer, "that’s you."
Dinner that evening turned itself into a small ceremony that nobody had planned or admitted to wanting. Loccy took to the name instantly, using it in every sentence as if it had always been true, while Juna tried it once, nodded to herself, and quietly declared it suited him.
Vella said nothing at all for a moment too long, then announced she was chopping onions in a kitchen that contained no onions.
Elise raised a cup, Sable pretended she wasn’t smiling, and Marrick wrote the registry line with more care than a census entry had ever received in this region.
[ ramen_witch: ] okay the mountain baby is named after his lost siblings and I am NOT alright
[ SleepDeprivedSteve: ] rip Lord Babyfist, you were too beautiful for this world
[ ashley (Mod): ] Welcome to the family, Ash. 🎉
The Soul Energy counter climbed all evening at a pace usually reserved for boss fights, which told Hajin something he tucked away for later: the viewers fed on sincerity just as hard as they fed on disaster.
Deep inside the eastern mountain, in the hollow of stone where nothing had moved for days, the sleeping guardian’s breathing shifted. The dream around her changed shape, and somewhere in it she heard a human voice hand her last child a name, spoken out loud, meant, and witnessed, the way names were given before the world forgot how.
A smile touched her face without waking her, and the stone settled around her while the mountain kept its silence.
