Chapter 190: See You Around
"Get away from master, you witch," Loccy screamed, dropping out of the trees with her hammer swinging in an arc directly toward Cessy’s head.
Cessy just giggled, effortlessly flipping backward to avoid the strike, the hammer shattering the ground exactly where she had been standing as dirt blasted into the air.
Loccy didn’t even pause to reset her stance, ripping the hammer out of the crater to launch a horizontal sweep aimed right at Cessy’s ribs. She swayed entirely out of the way without breaking her smile, letting the weapon smash through a line of trees behind her instead.
The impact snapped the trunks like twigs, sending wood raining down over the clearing.
"You are pretty fast for a rabbit," she teased, easily dodging another overhead smash that caved in the ground. She danced around the barrage of attacks like it was a game, her eyes tracking every movement while Loccy grew visibly more frustrated.
"Stop moving," Loccy yelled, her wings flaring brightly as she pushed her physical strength to the limit, swinging the hammer fast enough to blur the air.
Cessy stepped onto the flat side of the weapon, using the momentum to casually launch herself high into the air.
"looks like our fun will be cut short," she sighed, brushing a lock of hair behind her ear as she landed lightly on a high branch.
She blew Hajin a kiss from the canopy, flashing one last smile before melting entirely back into the shadows of the woods, "I’ll see you around, big brother."
Loccy smashed her hammer straight into the trunk of the tree, snapping it entirely in half as it crashed to the ground, but the demon girl was already completely gone.
"That fucking bitch," she growled, her grip on the hammer tightening as she glared into the woods.
Hajin blinked, caught off guard since it was the first time she had ever cussed since being summoned. The viewers staring at the broadcast had the exact same reaction, the chat freezing for five seconds before exploding.
[ ShadowMage44:] wait did loccy just cuss???
[ CringeSlayer91:] I THOUGHT SHE WAS INNOCENT
[ LurkerNoMore:] that demon girl got her tweaking lmao
Loccy was usually so bubbly, but the disrespect Cessy had shown flipped a switch in her head, leaving her looking ready to tear the forest apart. Hajin walked over, stepping over the broken trunk to reach her before reaching out and rubbing the base of her ears, scratching exactly where she liked it.
She stiffened for a split second before her eyes went wide, her aura evaporating as she leaned into his hand.
"Master," she hummed, the scowl melting into a happy smile as her personality instantly reset back to normal.
A system screen suddenly flashed in front of his face.
[ Gate Cleared: Unranked (Anomalous) ]
[ Compiling Total Experience... ]
[ Experience Gained: 9,250,000 ]
He stared at the number, letting out a slow breath cause this was a ridiculous amount of experience, but considering he had just fought an eight-shard monster and a ten-shard boss back-to-back, it made perfect sense.
The only problem was the proof.
He looked down at his left hand, staring at the leather of the Collector’s Grasp still stained with sludge since he had completely crushed the spider’s core into dust to end the fight. Without a core to present to the Guild, no one was going to believe he had actually cleared a ten-shard gate.
"Whatever," he muttered, dismissing the screen with a wave of his hand, it wasn’t like he actually cared about the fame anyway, and they still had the two eight-shard cores from the bird and the rabbit so that was something.
"Let’s go," he said, turning back to Loccy, "I am tired as hell."
"Master, how did you beat that strong monster?" She asked, her ears bouncing as she fell into step beside him.
"Did that witch actually help you? Did you just hit it really hard?" She fired off a dozen questions in the span of five seconds, her eyes wide with curiosity as she waited for an answer.
He just rubbed the bridge of his nose, having absolutely no idea how to explain that he had tapped into a demonic corruption to brutally slaughter the boss while laughing like a psychopath.
"It’s complicated," he sighed, deciding to just completely avoid the truth.
A hum resonated from the ring on his finger, a figure materializing beside them.
"Oh, Vella—" he started, before trailing off as he got a good look at her. She looked entirely different, her hair having shifted into a dark violet while the aura radiating off her body felt heavier, carrying the exact same weight as the demonic energy he had just been drowning in.
"What happened to you?" He asked.
She rolled her eyes, crossing her arms over her chest as she stared back at him. "What do you think happened? Assimilation is my skill, so naturally all of that mana you were funneling through the chain leaked directly into me."
"Huh," he muttered, reaching up to run a hand through his own hair just to make sure it hadn’t turned purple. "Did my appearance change too?"
"You and the others have nothing to worry about," she sighed, brushing a dark violet strand out of her eyes. "You are all directly linked to the divine power, so that corruption couldn’t take root in you even if it tried. Even though you brought me into your bloodline, I’m still just a side piece."
She looked down at her hands, flexing her fingers as the demonic energy pulsed just beneath her skin before looking back up at him.
"I’m not fully connected to the divine power like Loccy and Juna, so my body just naturally assimilated the strongest mana it could find. Maybe that will change eventually, but right now, this is just how things are."
His expression dropped, a wave of guilt washing over him as he realized he had forced this mutation onto her without asking.
"I’m sorry," he said, genuinely feeling terrible that he had corrupted her just to win the fight.
She blinked at him, tilting her head before letting out a laugh, "huh? Who said I hated it?"
She casually raised a hand, pointing a single finger toward the sky before firing off a blast of demonic energy that tore straight through the cloud cover.
"I’ve been stuck as nothing but a healer this entire time," she grinned, lowering her hand as the purple mana faded from her fingertips. "Now I can actually fight alongside you guys. In a sense, this is a big upgrade."
Loccy skipped over to her side, reaching out to play with the dark violet strands. "I like your new hair," she hummed, completely unbothered by the demonic aura.
Hajin didn’t say anything, his eyes still locked on the fading streak in the sky as he processed what she had just done.
He already knew the ring could assimilate and use stored mana, but he had always assumed Vella herself was strictly bound to healing. Seeing her independently weaponize the corruption proved there was a lot more to her physical manifestation than he had originally thought.
