Chapter 188: BackFire

Hajin stared up at Cessy, his exhausted mind struggling to process the sheer absurdity of her sudden request. He barely had the physical strength left to lift his arms, let alone fight a compressed anomaly currently treating the pit like a playground.

"You can do that absorbing thing with your chain again, right," she asked, casually tilting her head at him. She pointed a finger at the links wrapped around his arm, her expression perfectly relaxed despite the collapsing dimension.

The casual question dragged Hajin’s mind straight back to the suffocating pressure of the Beast King’s dungeon. The two presences watching him back then were undeniably Cessy and her quiet partner.

Before he could even open his mouth to answer, the air above them split with a deafening crack. The boss materialized out of the static, driving a condensed spear of mana straight down toward their heads.

Cessy didn’t even flinch, her left hand grabbing Hajin by the collar before he could react. She hoisted him into the air like he weighed nothing, her legs blurring as she launched them both backward to create distance.

The spear slammed into the ground where they had just been, violently detonating a massive crater into the floor.

The concussive blast washed over them mid-air, the searing heat singeing the edges of Hajin’s clothes as Cessy safely carried him away.

"I really can’t use my full power in here," she continued, her voice completely steady despite dodging a lethal barrage of attacks. "If I fully unleash my core, this unstable gate will immediately collapse and crush everything inside."

She landed lightly on pillar, immediately kicking off again to avoid a horizontal slice of energy. The attack sheared the thick pillar entirely in half, showering the pit below them in a rain of debris.

"I would be perfectly fine if the dimension shattered," she said, pulling him tightly against her side during the fall. "But you would definitely die from the void pressure, so I really need you to help me end this."

Hajin gritted his teeth against the vertigo, his grip tightening on the links wrapped around his good arm. He stared at the impossibly fast anomaly chasing them through the air, forcing his pragmatic mind to accept the ridiculous situation.

"How," he asked, the single word scraping out of his dry throat just as Cessy slammed her feet into the ground.

He didn’t have the mana or the physical strength left to even scratch a ten-shard boss in this compressed state.

She reached out and grabbed the chain wrapped around his useless arm, pulling the links forward and wrapping them around her own wrist.

He stared down at their bound wrists, his exhausted mind struggling to follow her logic. He had absolutely no idea how tying themselves together was supposed to help them survive.

"Absorb my mana," she said, looking back at the crater where the boss was recovering. "My core has healing properties, so if you keep draining me, I can use my power without the gate collapsing."

He tensed up at the command, his mind flashing straight back to his fight against the assassins in the capital. The last time he used corrupted mana, he completely lost his mind and attacked his own teammate.

"Hurry up," she said, grabbing him by the shoulder as the air above them split apart again. She hoisted him off the floor, launching them sideways to dodge another spear of mana.

Hajin stared at her wrist, his mind screaming at him to reject the connection before he lost control. He absolutely did not want to absorb her mana, but he seriously had no other choice.

’It’s do or die,’ he thought, bracing himself as another shockwave rattled his teeth. ’Fuck,’ he cursed silently, forcing his core to accept the incoming connection through the chain.

The moment he opened his core, a massive surge of mana flooded straight through the links and his mind immediately went numb under the density, his vision blurring as the energy hit him.

The pain radiating outward from his previously broken arm completely vanished a single second later. He watched the cuts on his chest close themselves, his muscles expanding as the mana healed his body.

The foreign energy didn’t just repair his flesh, it aggressively boosted his physical strength to a new level. He clenched his fist, the sheer power coursing through his veins completely overriding his exhaustion.

"Don’t let go," she said, her lips curling into a smile as the boss lunged at them again. She didn’t bother dodging this time, using the slack in the chain to launch herself directly at the anomaly.

Hajin braced his feet against the ground, pulling hard on the chain to act as her anchor. The sudden tension whipped her around in an arc, completely changing her trajectory mid-air.

The boss completely missed its strike, its claws hitting nothing but the air where Cessy had just been. She used the momentum from his pull to swing herself entirely around the anomaly’s back.

She drove her foot directly into the boss’s spine, the cannon-like impact making the monster shriek as its legs buckled.

Hajin sprinted forward to close the distance, channeling the surging mana into his fist as he launched himself right above the recovering boss.

Cessy yanked her arm backward, using the chain to accelerate his descent toward the ground. He drove his fist straight into the boss’s skull, their momentum violently detonating the floor beneath it.

The boss immediately lashed out with a desperate sweep of its claws, the attack tearing a massive hole clean through Hajin’s abdomen. A normal hunter would have died instantly, but Hajin just laughed, his eyes burning with an unhinged light as he tanked the next strike.

Another spear of mana pierced straight through his shoulder, causing the chain to violently rip more energy directly from Cessy’s wrist in response.

He completely ignored the pain as his flesh rapidly knitted back together, wrapping his hands around the embedded spear and snapping it. He used the chain to pull himself forward, completely abandoning all defense as he hammered another punch into the shrieking monster’s skull.

The foreign mana was completely overriding his mind, forcing him to fight purely on violent instinct as he tore into the boss with relentless brutality.

Cessy yanked desperately on the chain, her face going completely pale as the unyielding links forced her forward, "stop," she screamed over the noise.

Hajin wasn’t just using her mana to heal anymore, "you’re draining me too fast," she yelled, her eyes widening in genuine panic.

He expanded the connection, ignoring her warning as he looked back, "your power is really tasty," he whispered, a smile stretching across his face.

He refused to shut off the connection, ripping another surge from her core, "i think i will just take all of it," he said.

Cessy stumbled forward under the force of the drain, trying to pull the links off her wrist, but he had already overpowered her.
