Chapter 48: Chapter 48: Exposed: Hu Yan Knows
Hearing Sang Mo’s words, Lang Qiu frowned and shouted, "Sang Mo!"
Sang Mo sneered. "Am I wrong? Don’t tell me you’ve forgotten how she treated you for all those years just because she’s been nice to you on a whim for the past couple of days. What’s that saying? A dog will always go back to eating shit."
He tilted his head to look at Bai Zhi, his eyes filled with an excited eagerness to try. "Or, you could just bear with it for a moment. I’ll make it quick, and we can skip this whole process."
Bai Zhi’s emotions didn’t fluctuate much at Sang Mo’s words. She had known from the very beginning that he wanted nothing more than to kill her. ’Even though I’m not the one who did it, the harm done to him was real. Since I’ve taken over this body, I have to accept these things.’
After hearing Sang Mo’s words, Yue Junxiao and Yan Yichen, who hadn’t quite understood before, began to vaguely grasp what Hu Yan had meant earlier.
The two of them were starting to develop a good impression of Bai Zhi. Although they were still wounded by the past, they had begun to slowly accept her after spending this time together. Naturally, they were unwilling to let Bai Zhi be forced into that situation.
Just as Yan Yichen was about to speak, Yue Junxiao beat him to it, his voice laced with anger. "Do you do anything else all day besides think about killing her?"
Hu Yan said, "That’s enough. We’re sitting here to discuss a solution, not to start fighting amongst ourselves."
He then mused, "Actually, it’s not as if we’re out of options. There are currently three major powers in the Capital. One is the Royalist Faction, led by the Emperor. Another is led by the Eldest Prince, and the third belongs to the faction of the missing Third Prince. The various forces in the Capital have essentially aligned with one of these three."
"The Emperor is old, so the ones with the best chance of inheriting the throne are the Eldest Prince and the Third Prince. The Royalist Faction doesn’t care who the Emperor is; they only recognize the Beastman who inherits the throne. The Eldest Prince has considerable influence in the imperial court. The Third Prince was born to the Empress and has won many victories in the war against the Insect Clan. He even disappeared during a battle against the Insect Clan after being betrayed by a subordinate. This led to him being cut off from reinforcements, and he was ultimately swallowed by an Insect Cave along with his Mecha, White Silk. He has yet to be found."
Lang Qiu, who also had some understanding of the various factions, nodded in agreement. "If the Third Prince were still around, he would indeed be an excellent choice."
Hu Yan reminded them, "The Third Prince may be gone, but he has a childhood friend from one of the Capital’s four great families. All these years, even the Prince’s own subordinates have given up the search, but his friend never has."
Bai Zhi shook her head. She didn’t want to rely on anyone. "Actually," she said softly, "there is a simpler way."
Yue Junxiao asked instinctively, "What way?"
Bai Zhi said quietly, "All of you become SSS-level. As long as you and I are all strong enough to be feared, this is just a minor problem."
As soon as she said this, everyone fell silent. Even the look Hu Yan gave her was complicated.
’Who wouldn’t want to be powerful?’
But currently, Hu Yan’s and Lang Qiu’s spiritual power were both at A+ Level, Sang Mo was A-level, and Yue Junxiao and Yan Yichen were both B-level. How could they all possibly ascend to Level 3S in such a short time?
In the entire Beast World, who didn’t know how incredibly difficult it was to raise one’s spiritual power?
Hu Yan’s spiritual power had actually been demoted. But even before the demotion, he was only SS-level, nowhere near 3S.
Sang Mo sneered, "You might as well just let me kill you."
Bai Zhi ignored his words and began to explain the effects of the Comfort Upgrade Pill as if it were part of her superpower. "My superpower has a unique quality..."
She paused, hesitating over whether she should really say it, but after a moment, she did.
’My system exists because of them; all five are indispensable. Since that’s the case, I can only do my best to atone for the mistakes the original owner made before me.’
Seeing that they were all looking at her, Bai Zhi pursed her lips and said, "...It can increase my Beast Husbands’ superpowers..."
Hu Yan murmured, "Increase superpowers..."
Yan Yichen was so shocked he leaped up from the sofa. "A superpower that increases other superpowers? How is that possible!"
Lang Qiu’s brow furrowed. "I’ve never heard of a superpower that can increase the superpowers of others."
Bai Zhi said with a candid expression, "I only just found out myself."
Only Hu Yan, his expression unreadable, sent her a message on her Light Computer: [Does the testing center know about this?]
Bai Zhi froze for a second when she saw the message from Hu Yan. She obviously hadn’t expected him to use his Light Computer to message her when he was sitting right across from her.
When Bai Zhi opened the message, her heart skipped a beat. She instinctively looked toward Hu Yan, but he didn’t meet her gaze.
She pressed her lips together, realizing there was a flaw in what she had just said. Hu Yan had evidently guessed something about her, but he simply hadn’t said it out loud.
And from the looks of it, this wasn’t a new suspicion. Otherwise, he wouldn’t have sent her a message at this moment instead of just asking her out loud.
She figured the flaw was probably that if her superpower could really enhance a Beastman’s, she would have said so at the same time she announced she was a Purification Master. Why would she be so hesitant and secretive? Because the data from the testing center is transmitted to the master brain.
Correspondingly, once it became known that she was an S+ Level female Purification Master who could also enhance a Beastman’s superpower, she would undoubtedly become a target for everyone to fight over.
An S+ female might not be enough to drive them crazy, but an S+ Level female who was also a Purification Master *and* could increase superpowers would absolutely be fought over by every Beastman.
Why would she possibly conceal something so important at a time like this, only revealing that she was a Purification Master?
She knew Hu Yan was smart, but she never imagined he was this frighteningly perceptive!
She had been so careful all this time, thinking she hadn’t given herself away, but she never expected that Hu Yan had seen right through her long ago.
’But why hadn’t he exposed her?’
’And how much had he guessed?’
’When did she slip up and give herself away?’
Bai Zhi’s mind had never been so clear as she replayed everything from her time here.
’Perhaps it was the first time Hu Yan entered the kitchen to help her. Almost no Beastmen or females here ever set foot in a kitchen, to say nothing of someone like her predecessor.’
’Or maybe it was her sudden physical change last time, and the Detoxification Pill.’
’Or could it have been even earlier? Did his suspicions start right when she first transmigrated here?’
’After all, the difference in behavior between her and the original owner was immense. How could a Beastman as intelligent as Hu Yan not be suspicious?’
’Or perhaps... he didn’t even believe her story about winning the lottery?’
Since Hu Yan chose to send her a message, it meant he didn’t intend to expose her.
Bai Zhi pressed her lips together and replied to Hu Yan’s message: [The testing center doesn’t know.]
This was undoubtedly an admission that her claim about her superpower enhancing a Beastman’s was false, and that she had some other ace up her sleeve.
She thought Hu Yan would continue to question her, and she was prepared to confess everything if he did. But she waited for a long time, and no further questions came.
