Chapter 146: Him being an illegitimate child already made him less favorable

The car door swung open before it had fully stopped.

The man was already on the ground beside him, and his hands hovered over the blood that was immediate and real and far more than he was prepared for. The victim was young. Far too young. His eyes were half open and unfocused, and his breathing was audible and shallow.

"Oh my God," the man said, pressing two fingers to his neck. A pulse was there—thin, but present. He exhaled hard. "Sir, can you hear me? Sir?" He looked up. "Haiyan! Haiyan, get over here right now. The hospital is right there. Help me get him inside. We need to go now."

Haiyan was already out of the car and moving. Together they lifted Ren Hao off the ground. The man took his shoulders, and Haiyan took his legs. They moved fast back through the hospital doors that had barely closed behind him twenty minutes ago.

"I’m so sorry," the man said, speaking to the man on the ground and to no one at once, his voice tight and his hands shaking slightly as they carried him through. "I’m so sorry. Stay with me. We’re almost there. Just stay with me."

The double doors swung shut behind them with a heavy thud.

Haiyan shouted for help as they carried Ren Hao through the corridor of St. Mercy Hospital. Nurses turned and moved at once, clearing a path and calling for a gurney. Guiying kept his grip steady on Ren Hao’s legs, matching Haiyan’s pace step for step.

They reached the gurney and lowered Ren Hao onto it without jostling him. Haiyan gave a quick report on the impact, the bleeding, and the pulse. Guiying added that the patient had been conscious when they lifted him.

A nurse nodded and pushed the gurney toward the trauma bay, barking instructions as she moved. Haiyan followed, his hands still stained with blood, and Guiying stayed at his shoulder.

In the trauma bay the lights were bright and the air smelled of antiseptic and metal. Doctors moved in immediately, cutting away Ren Hao’s shirt and pressing gauze to the worst of the bleeding. Someone called for a blood type. Someone else ordered a scan.

Haiyan stepped back when the team took over. He kept his eyes on Ren Hao’s face until the oxygen mask covered it. Only then did he let his shoulders drop.

Guiying put a hand on his arm. "We did what we could, Haiyan," Guiying said. "You got him here fast."

Haiyan nodded, but he didn’t answer. He stared at the floor until his breathing slowed.

A doctor turned to them after a minute. "We’re stabilizing him now," the doctor said. "He’s critical, but he’s alive. We’ll update you as soon as we know more."

Haiyan swallowed and said, "Do what you need to do."

Guiying guided him out of the trauma bay and toward the waiting area. The corridor was quieter here, the noise of the emergency reduced to a distant murmur.

They sat down on the plastic chairs. Haiyan rested his elbows on his knees and held his head in his hands. Guiying sat beside him for a long time.

Then Guiying reached for his own phone with shaking fingers. His hands were still red at the edges, and the smell of blood clung to his skin. He found Liuxian’s contact and pressed call.

Liuxian answered on the second ring. "Guiying? What’s wrong?"

Guiying opened his mouth, and the words broke on the way out. "Liuxian," he said, and his voice cracked. "It’s me and Haiyan. We’re at St. Mercy, in the trauma waiting area. There was an accident."

Liuxian’s voice sharpened immediately. "Are you hurt? Talk to me."

"I’m fine," Guiying said quickly. "Haiyan’s shaken up, but he’s fine too. It’s the other guy. He walked out in front of the car. Haiyan didn’t see him until it was too late." His breathing hitched. "They’re working on him now. I don’t know if he’s going to make it."

"Stay right there," Liuxian said, already moving. "I’m leaving now. Keep your phone with you, I’m on my way.."

The call ended.

Guiying lowered the phone and sat back down next to Haiyan.

The overhead lights hummed above them. Outside, the city kept moving. Inside, the machines kept beeping.

"I’m so sorry." Haiyan said quietly. "If only I had seen him on time.."

Guiying shook his head, he knew this wasn’t Haiyan’s fault. The fault lied on the clear headed man who stepped forward despite knowing the traffic green lights were on. "Don’t worry. You’re not the one at fault here."

It was a typical suicide case but Guiying didn’t want to be the medium for it.

His reputation was on the line.

Guiying leaned back, what a stressful week this had been and he knew this was going to be the least of it.

The dinner was fast approaching.

There was no going back once he reveals the man he got married to is Liu Liuxian.

His father was a greedy man so he would definitely contact the Liu family or even Liuxian for some kind of corporation.

And once the Liu family knew, he and Liuxian would also have to address them.

The Liu family was the number one family in the country and their eldest son was a billionaire.

He knew they would have high expectations when it came to who he married.

And him being an illegitimate child already made him less favorable.

Still, no matter what. He wasn’t going to leave Liuxian.

He’d fight until his last breath to keep the man who treated him right.

He had suffered more times than he could count in his past life.

A little suffering in this new one wouldn’t kill him.

Guiying raised his head when he heard footsteps approaching.

When he saw the familiar face, a myriad of emotions flashed through his face.

Relief.

Hope.

"Liuxian..."

"Guiying..."

Guiying stood up and before he could say anything else.

Liuxian pulled him into his arms.

"I was worried. Are you hurt? You feel a little cold.."

Guiying shook his head, his arms tightening around Liuxian. Having him here made him realize just how scared he had been.

Before he could even reply, he was already sobbing.

Unable to now form coherent sentences.

"Don’t cry, it’s natural to feel fear. I’m here now and I’ll take care of things.."
