Chapter 362: Chapter 362: A Friend I’ve Never Met
At that moment, Reginald Sutton, who was driving, couldn’t help but say:
"If Miss Jacobs is only worried about Lexy’s safety, you really don’t need to take such a big risk.
We can figure something else out when we get to the base."
He was naturally willing to help, but he just didn’t know what Nina Jacobs’s motive was.
After all, they had all just met.
"It’s not entirely because of Lexy,"
Nina Jacobs answered crisply.
"Then what is it about?" Rhonda Rowan asked.
"Let’s just say... it’s because of someone. She was an ordinary person with no Superpower,
but she wanted to change the status quo.
She tried so hard, even gave her life, but in the end, she still failed.
I want... to carry on for her."
After Nina Jacobs finished speaking, a look of surprise appeared on Cordelia’s face.
"Was she your friend?" she asked cautiously.
"Yes, a friend."
Nina Jacobs replied. A friend she had never met.
There was a passage in Isabella Ramsey’s diary: *If I could, I would want to personally shatter that man-eating system. If one day I die, my soul will still earnestly hope that someone can change all of this before tragedy strikes...*
The power of words is what moves people the most.
Nina Jacobs admitted she was influenced by this power, even though it was just a diary.
"It must be nice to have a friend like you."
Cordelia was a little envious of that person.
Although Nina Jacobs’s words were ambiguous, Cordelia was inexplicably convinced.
"Are you guys... not going back to the Aid Society anymore?"
At this point, Rhonda Rowan asked.
’The Aid Society?’
Seeing Nina Jacobs’s confusion, Rhonda Rowan explained:
"It’s an aid society we all secretly set up at the base. We’re willing to help anyone who’s in trouble."
Cordelia also nodded and said, "The few of us joined the expedition after seeing the Aid Society’s call to go out and search for water and supplies.
But Rhonda has always been one of the leaders in the society. She’s helped a lot of people before."
Nina Jacobs now understood.
So Cordelia and the other three had joined the expedition team to find water and supplies, and in doing so, had also answered the Aid Society’s call.
And Rhonda Rowan was one of its founders.
"It’s only right for people to help each other when they’re in trouble. I’ll still go back to the Aid Society.
But Miss Jacobs, you don’t have to worry. I won’t tell anyone about Lexy."
Rhonda Rowan promised.
"As long as I’m here, I’ll protect Lexy myself."
Nina Jacobs lowered her head and ruffled Lexy’s fur. Although Lexy’s round eyes were still staring out the window, watching for any zombies that might appear,
it trustingly allowed her and Wayne Warner to touch it freely.
Nina Jacobs had a relaxed expression as she spoke, a smile even playing in her eyes, as if she wasn’t worried at all.
"Miss Jacobs, you really are a very caring person,"
Rhonda Rowan said.
"You’ve misunderstood."
Nina Jacobs replied, "I help people based on conditions, and also based on my mood."
Lexy had helped her and was incredibly perceptive.
The warning sign on the roadside had helped her, so she was willing to lend a hand to a few people who were on the verge of death.
"You have a point, but I just think you should take a look around Lornwood Base. Maybe it’ll change your perspective."
Rhonda Rowan wanted to take the opportunity to persuade her, but she was interrupted by Cordelia.
"But Rhonda, we almost got ourselves killed this time."
Her experiences outside these past few days had made her realize just how naive their previous ideas had been.
If something really happened, they couldn’t even protect themselves, let alone help others.
Rhonda Rowan wanted to say more, but the vehicle stopped just then.
"The road ahead is blocked by utility poles. We might have to get out and clear them,"
Reginald Sutton said.
Just as he was about to open the door, Nina Jacobs stopped him. "Don’t get out yet."
"What’s wrong?"
Reginald Sutton asked, not understanding.
"Those utility poles were severed by a Superpower, and they haven’t been down for long,"
Nina Jacobs said.
"Are you saying it’s likely a zombie trap?" Tobin had noticed it now, too.
This road was windy and dusty, and the abandoned vehicles around them were already half-buried in sand.
Four concrete utility poles lay across the road ahead. The cross-section of each pole was perfectly neat, and the area around them was clean, not buried by even a bit of sand.
"Not necessarily zombies."
Nina Jacobs observed their surroundings. There were already quite a few zombie corpses on the road. The only ones who could kill zombies were people.
It was very likely that someone had created this roadblock after spotting them.
If they got out now, they would probably be ambushed.
Those people were likely hiding behind the abandoned vehicles and derelict houses on either side of the road.
"You’re right."
After Nina Jacobs’s warning, Silas Crowley also noticed that something was off outside.
"So what do we do now?"
Cordelia asked nervously.
"We can’t go around it, and we can’t go through it. At the very least, we shouldn’t be the first to expose ourselves. Let’s wait for them to show themselves."
As she spoke, Nina Jacobs activated "Five Senses Enhancement."
After a moment of listening, she did indeed hear the sound of people talking.
They didn’t just want their supplies; they wanted the vehicle, too.
"They must have noticed. These people might not be simple."
That’s what Nina Jacobs heard a man’s voice say, thanks to her "Five Senses Enhancement."
"That heavy-duty RV can hold fourteen people at most. There are over thirty of us. What’s there to be afraid of?"
"I’m not afraid, but I am worried they’ll fight to the death. If they take us down with them, we won’t get anything out of it."
"Corin, take a few people and go check it out."
The first voice spoke again.
"Me?"
Corin seemed to hesitate.
"What, you joined us, but you’re still trying to be some kind of saint?"
"Exactly. We finally get someone coming down this road, and they look like fat sheep. Don’t you want to score some points?"
"Fine, I get it."
"..."
’Isn’t Corin the name Cordelia and the others just mentioned?’ Doubt flickered in Nina Jacobs’s eyes.
Rhonda Rowan seemed to hold him in high regard.
’I couldn’t have misheard. Could it be someone else with the same name?’
But from the sounds of it, she would soon have her answer.
The group listened to Nina Jacobs and waited nervously inside the vehicle.
Sure enough, before long, a few people emerged from behind a derelict two-story building in the distance.
As the figures drew closer, Rhonda Rowan pointed at one of them in pleasant surprise and exclaimed:
"Corin? Isn’t that Corin? He’s really alive!"
"It really is Corin. But why is he here?"
Cordelia was also thrilled at first, but she quickly realized something was wrong.
They didn’t recognize the people next to Corin.
But for them to appear here... could it be...?
However, Rhonda Rowan had already pushed open the door and gotten out of the vehicle.
"Why did she get out?"
Reginald Sutton didn’t even have time to stop her.
"Let’s go take a look. Rhonda was on good terms with Corin, and he helped us out a lot before,"
Tobin said after a moment of thought.
"Be careful. They’re bad news."
Nina Jacobs didn’t know how to explain the situation to them, so she could only follow them out of the vehicle.
Corin, it seemed, hadn’t expected to run into acquaintances either.
For a split second, his expression turned incredibly ugly.
But faced with Rhonda Rowan’s concern, he had no choice but to force himself to remain calm.
"Well now, you all knew each other before?"
Seeing this, a man behind Corin stepped forward and asked with a smirk.
"Corin, what are you doing here? Where are the others?"
Tobin also saw the weapons on this new group of people. He alertly blocked Rhonda Rowan, who had been about to step forward.
