Chapter 423: A Little Piece of Candy
"Do you want to see him?" Nina asked.
Idir hesitated for a moment. "I suppose I’ll see him, just to hear what it’s about."
He didn’t actually want to, but he was worried it might have something to do with Nina, so he figured it was best to find out.
"Alright." Nina turned to Ridan. "Let him in."
Ridan left and brought Yonn inside.
Upon entering the room, Yonn immediately offered Nina a respectful bow. "Greetings, City Lord Nina."
Nina looked at him. "What business do you have with Idir and me?"
Yonn looked up. "I... I have a favor to ask."
Suddenly, his eyes widened as he noticed the small black mass cradled in Nina’s arms. A... a little Black Snake? Could it be Idir’s cub?
Idir was so young; how did he already have a cub? How old was he even?
Then, Yonn spotted Mimi in her little basin. Why was there a female mermaid cub here too? Don’t tell me she belonged to the female as well?
Just then, the sound of other cubs laughing and playing drifted in from the courtyard. Yonn was completely stunned. There are more?

He hadn’t expected Idir’s female to be not only incredibly powerful, but so exceptionally fertile.
"What is it?" Nina pressed.
"City Lord, Idir’s mother is very ill," Yonn said, a guilty edge to his voice. "We... we would like to ask you to treat her."
Nina glanced over at Idir.
Seeing this, Yonn immediately turned to Idir to plead. "Idir, she is your mother after all. Please, save her!"
Idir let out a cold scoff. So that was what this was about.
"Go back," he said indifferently. "My female will not help you."
He wanted absolutely nothing more to do with them. Choosing not to seek revenge was already his greatest compromise. Besides, once Nina obtained the sacred artifact tomorrow, every beastman in the city would be saved—including her.
Seeing how heartless Idir was being, Yonn snapped angrily, "Idir, she’s your mother! How can you just stand by and watch her die?" He truly hadn’t expected Idir to refuse to save Weena.
Idir laughed coldly. "When she drugged me back then, why didn’t she remember she was my mother?"
If his father hadn’t risked his life to protect him back then, he would have been dead long ago.
Flustered, Yonn tried to justify it. "Your mother was misled. Back then, we were just afraid you two would lose control and hurt the tribe, which is why..."
Idir’s face twisted into a mocking sneer. "Afraid we would hurt the tribe? Did we ever hurt a single tribesman? And who did my father expose his curse for in the first place?"
Yonn was instantly flooded with shame, utterly at a loss for how to keep defending himself.
It was true that they had wronged Idir and Adir first. The father and son had never harmed anyone; instead, they had consistently protected the tribe. But they were cursed beastmen, so it was only natural for the tribe to be afraid!
Lowering his voice, he pleaded, "We were wrong before. We... we can apologize to you. Or, if you want to take your anger out on us fathers as punishment, that’s fine too."
"There’s no need. What good are your apologies? Can they bring my father back to life? You should consider yourselves lucky I haven’t hunted you down for revenge."
Idir’s expression was frozen in apathy. "If you have no other important business, please leave. And don’t ever look for my female or me again."
Yonn tried one last desperate attempt. "Idir, she gave birth to you. Are you really going to just let her die?"

"Please leave," Idir repeated coldly.
Did Yonn think he couldn’t see right through him? They only came to beg Nina because they wanted to avoid being sacrificed to the formation.
Realizing he was getting nowhere with Idir, Yonn turned his appeals back to Nina. "City Lord, surely you don’t want the beastmen of the city calling Idir unfilial? Please, won’t you save his mother?"
"I support any decision Idir makes," Nina replied flatly. She then looked toward Ridan. "Show our guest out."
Ridan stepped up to Yonn immediately, fixing him with a chilling stare.
Left with no choice, Yonn departed in bitter disappointment.
Idir moved back to Nina’s side, leaning against her and holding her close again. From now on, having Nina was more than enough for him.
Momo glanced up at Idir. So the big bad snake is actually that pitiful!
After a moment of thought, the cub dug into his spatial pocket and picked out the absolute smallest candy he had. He nudged himself over quietly, and with a slight twinge of regret, used the tip of his little tail to proffer the candy to Idir.
Considering the big bad snake had made him so many delicious little pastries, he would take pity on him just this once and give him a sweet piece of candy.
Nina let out a soft laugh.
Surprised, Idir’s lips curved slightly into a smile as he accepted the treat. This little ungrateful snake actually had a bit of a conscience after all.
Seeing Idir accept it, Momo dug around again, pulled out the largest candy he could find, and offered it to Nina. Mother, you eat too.
Nina took the candy and leaned down to kiss him with a smile. "Thank you, Momo."
Happily validated, Momo snuggled back down into Nina’s arms.
Idir looked down at his own candy, then over at Nina’s.
Whatever, he thought. Better than nothing.
Setan found himself feeling envious all over again. Even Idir had received a little piece of candy. It looked like he really needed to work on mending his relationship with Sunny. With that thought, Setan began plotting how to get back into Sunny’s good graces.
This time, even Lex felt a twinge of jealousy. He had never received a little candy before!
They played for a while longer until it was nearly lunchtime. Nina picked up Momo and Mimi, called the rest of the cubs over, and headed to the dining room together.
Meanwhile, a deeply worried Yonn returned home.
Idir had refused to save Weena. What was he supposed to do now? Was he really going to have to sacrifice himself?
Word of his visit to Idir quickly reached Weena’s ears. She called Yonn into her room. "Yonn, did you go see Idir?"
Yonn lowered his gaze. "Yes."
Weena flared up. "Who gave you permission to go see him?"

Yonn remained silent. Having returned empty-handed, he was in no mood to argue with her.
Weena hesitated for a moment, but couldn’t help asking, "What... what did he say?"
For some reason, a faint, lingering shred of hope still stirred deep down inside her.
"Idir refused. He said never to look for him again," Yonn said in a low voice.
A look of profound loneliness washed over Weena’s eyes. "I see."
Though she had expected as much, she couldn’t help the wave of disappointment that hit her.
After a brief pause, Yonn decided to tell her about Momo. "Female Master, it seems Idir has a cub. I saw a tiny Black Snake with the exact same beast form as his."
Weena’s eyes instantly lit up. "Really?"
Idir actually had a cub? She had a grand-cub? Because Sal had kept the cubs further back that day, Weena hadn’t caught sight of them before.
"Yes, I saw it with my own eyes," Yonn confirmed.
A trace of happiness colored Weena’s face. "That’s wonderful."
At least Idir’s life hadn’t turned out too badly after leaving.
"Female Master, I will take my leave now," Yonn said flatly.
Today would likely be his last day alive. Since Weena had given the order, he had no choice but to obey. If he refused, she would claw through his beast imprint, leaving him with an equally miserable fate. It was better to die for a purpose.
Weena looked at Yonn, a sudden pang of guilt striking her. "You don’t need to worry about any chores around the house today. Go get some proper rest."
Without a word, Yonn returned to his room and did not come out again.
On the other side of town, Tair received word that Penny had been captured.
Frantic with anxiety, he threw caution to the wind and snuck out to find Alar.
"What is wrong with you?" Tair demanded aggressively. "Didn’t I tell you to protect Penny? How could you let her get captured?"
"I am sorry, Lord Tair. I was no match for Xirin," Alar replied guiltily. As a father, he had failed to protect his only female cub.

"Have you found out where Xirin took her?" Tair pressed.
"Not yet," Alar said. "But Xirin just sent me a message."
"What did he say?" Tair asked urgently.
"He said that during tomorrow’s formation sacrifice, we must help him kill City Lord Milt. Otherwise, he will kill Penny," Alar explained.
"He wouldn’t dare!"
Tair was furious. Damn that Xirin for daring to abduct Penny. He was going to slaughter him!
"Then tomorrow, we..." Alar looked at Tair cautiously.
"We help him first. We can’t let him hurt Penny," Tair decided. Once Penny was safely back, he would settle the score with Xirin.
"Understood," Alar nodded. "Lord Tair, your injuries..."
"I’m fine," Tair dismissed. "Tomorrow, I will slip into the crowd of beastmen and act when the opportunity arises."
"Yes, sir," Alar complied.
Tair quickly returned to his hiding spot. He pulled out a large stash of high-grade beast crystals and, gritting his teeth, forcefully absorbed them all at once. He needed to recover as much of his strength as possible, as quickly as possible. Tomorrow, he had to rescue Penny no matter what.
