Chapter 421: Would she help her?

Alar looked up to see a fierce-looking male beastman with black hair and clad in black robes. "Xirin? What are you doing here?"

He immediately signaled the guard units for backup, then spread his arms wide to shield Penny behind him. "I won’t let you take her."

Xirin was likely targeting Penny to use her as leverage against both him and Tair. After skulking in the shadows for so long, the fact that Xirin now dared to show his face so openly meant his strength had grown significantly. Alar wasn’t entirely sure he could win this fight. His best move was to stall for time until the guards arrived.

"That’s not up to you," Xirin sneered. Turning to his subordinates, he barked, "Seize the female!"

If Tair were here, Xirin might have hesitated, but Tair could barely look after himself right now. A mere Alar stood no chance of protecting her.

Tair had always been incredibly powerful and kept a tight leash on this female, rarely leaving her side. But last night, he had been cornered by Idir’s female. Given how terrifyingly strong that woman was, Tair must have resorted to the Serpent clan’s forbidden art just to escape her clutches. Xirin knew he had to tread carefully around Idir’s female himself. If she decided to back Milt tomorrow, his own plans would be in jeopardy.

Then again, it didn’t entirely matter. He held a massive trump card over Milt; there was no way Lady Nina would help Milt once that came to light.

On Xirin’s command, his lackeys lunged toward Penny, while Xirin stepped forward to deal with Alar himself. The courtyard guards surged forward to defend her, but Xirin was simply too powerful. Alar was completely outmatched and instantly forced onto the defensive.

Just then, Harin—who had already been staking out the area—rushed in with the guard units. Catching sight of the intruder, Harin yelled, "Xirin! You actually dared to crawl back here."

They hadn’t managed to flush out Tair, but trapping Xirin instead was a welcome bonus. Harin immediately ordered the guards to attack.

Seeing the reinforcement units flood the courtyard, Xirin worried that Nina might be close behind. Unleashing a devastating strike, he forced Alar to instinctively dodge. Seizing the opening, Xirin grabbed Penny and bolted.

"No!" Alar cried out in horror. He tried to give chase, but Xirin’s remaining lackeys blocked his path, leaving him to watch helplessly as his daughter was carried away.

By the time Nina arrived, Xirin was already gone, and his scattered lackeys were fleeing in all directions. Harin sent guards after them, determined to round up whoever they could catch.

"Penny was taken?" Nina asked. She lived nearby and had hurried over the moment she saw Harin’s signal.

"Yes. Xirin moved too fast; we didn’t manage to pin him down in time," Harin said, frustrated.

"Then waste no time tracking him," Nina advised. "If Xirin has her, Tair will likely show his face very soon."

"Right. We’ll get on his trail immediately," Harin replied.

Nina nodded and headed back. If Harin and his men couldn’t track them down tonight, both Tair and Xirin would almost certainly reveal themselves tomorrow anyway. She would step in then.

Meanwhile, at a manor in the central district.

Weena looked at her beast husbands. Two days had passed, and not a single one of them had stepped forward to volunteer as a sacrifice for her. Her heart grew cold. "It’s the final day. Have you still not reached a decision? Who is going?"

Her husbands remained silent, each staring at the floor. None of them wanted to die.

Weena let out a bitter laugh. "If you won’t choose, should I choose for you?"

Finally, one husband spoke up nervously, "Why not send Nuan? He’s the strongest among us."

Nuan’s face darkened instantly. "Because I’m strong, I need to stay and protect our female. Your strength is mediocre at best; you should be the one to go."

"But the City Lord specifically requested a powerful beastman!" the first husband shot back.

"You might be average compared to me, but you’re still far stronger than a common beastman. You’ll do just fine," Nuan sneered.

"I still think it should be you," the other retorted.

The rest of the husbands kept their mouths shut, silently watching the argument play out. They wanted nothing more than for the two to reach a conclusion so someone else would take the fall. But after wrangling for a long time, neither male was willing to yield.

Weena turned her gaze to Nuan, who immediately waved his hands in panic. "My Queen, you still need me here to protect you!"

When she looked at another husband, he shook his head frantically. "My Queen, you love my company the most. If I go, who will make you happy?"

As Weena scanned the rest of the room, the others quickly piled on excuses.

Leaning back against her headboard, a look of profound mockery crossed her face. "If I die from this illness, do you really think any of you will survive?"

When these males had begged to mate with her, every single one of them swore they loved her and would gladly die for her. Yet when the day actually came, they couldn’t run away fast enough. Only Adir would have thrown himself in front of her without a second thought in the face of danger.

And yet, the only husband who had truly loved her was the one she had killed with her own hands.

At the thought of Adir, Weena’s eyes grew misty.

Her husbands lowered their heads. They knew that if anything happened to Weena, their fates were sealed. But self-preservation was a powerful thing, and none of them wanted to throw their lives away.

Weena swept her cold eyes across the room. "Since you can’t decide, I will make the choice."

Her husbands trembled, terrified that their names would be called.

Desperate, one of them blurted out, "My Queen... what if—what if we go to Idir’s female? She... she might be able to cure you."

Another husband immediately jumped on the idea. "Yes! You are Idir’s mother, after all. I’m sure she would save you. Besides, she’s supposed to be a benevolent female."

The rest chimed in eagerly, grasping at straws. "Exactly! We think asking Idir’s female for help is a great idea. If you just speak to Idir, he’ll definitely beg his female to save you."

A deep sadness washed over Weena’s eyes. "Idir’s female? You think she would save me?"

Her lips curled into a self-deprecating smile. "Have you all forgotten what we did to Idir? You actually have the nerve to ask him for help? Do you truly believe he would ever lift a finger for us?"

Would Idir help her? Not a chance. The other day, he hadn’t even been willing to look her in the eye.
