Chapter 418: Sudden attack

"Tair, how did you know I was in the city?" Idir asked.

"I know the City Lord tasked you all with catching the killer, so I came over specifically to help you out," Tair replied.

"I see. But we aren’t moving until tonight," Idir said.

"That’s fine. You can walk me through your plan so I know how best to coordinate with you."

"Alright."

Idir gave Tair a brief rundown of their operational plan.

"Is your female not acting with you?" Tair asked.

Idir shook his head. "There are quite a few beastmen to catch this time, so we’ve split up. Nina is with some of the other husbands."

A dark glint flashed through Tair’s eyes. "No matter. You have my help."

Idir patted Tair on the shoulder. "Your strength has improved a lot over the years! You’ve even become an elder."

"I’ve worked harder these past few years," Tair smiled. "Since I lack innate talent, I had no choice but to grind through cultivation."

A look of gravity and concern settled into Idir’s eyes. "We suspect the killers are linked to Xirin and a few of the elders. You need to be careful and keep your guard up around them, especially the ones who used to be close with Xirin."

Tair nodded. "Mm, I will. Thanks, brother." He then asked, seemingly in passing, "By the way, what rank is your female? She looked incredibly strong the other day, defeating so many elders with such ease."

"Nina is indeed very strong, but I’ve never actually asked her about her exact rank," Idir replied.

Tair nodded slightly. "Ah. Still, regardless of her rank, for a female to reach this level is already extraordinary. You’re very lucky to have found a female who is both this powerful and so protective of you."

A tender warmth bloomed in Idir’s eyes. "I think so too. I probably used up a lifetime of luck just to meet Nina."

Tair teased, "Tsk tsk. Look at you—having a female really changes a guy. The once cold-faced young master, who wouldn’t even spare a female a glance, is actually making such a sappy face now."

Idir raised an eyebrow. "You have a female yourself, yet you dare mock me? Don’t tell me you aren’t the exact same way around your own female."

A shadow crossed the depths of Tair’s eyes, though his face remained bright with a smile. "I’m definitely not as sappy as you. Every male behaves differently around their female."

Idir gave him a look that clearly said I don’t buy it for a second.

Tair shrugged. Glancing at Ridan and the others standing behind Idir, he shifted the subject. "Is bringing this few beastmen tonight going to be enough?"

"It’s plenty. Ridan is an eighth-rank beastman, and Lang is no slouch either. Based on the clues we’ve gathered, the killers’ strength isn’t overly formidable yet. This group is more than enough to handle them, and bringing too many would only make us easy to spot." Idir smiled. "Plus, we have you now. Tonight will go smoothly, without a doubt."

"Rest assured, I’ll do my absolute best to back you up," Tair promised with a smile.

After a quick final review of the plan, they moved into position ahead of time, lying in wait for the night’s operation.

Night fell quickly. The already desolate streets grew even quieter, with every household shutting their doors tightly, leaving only an occasional lone beastman walking about.

On a dark, eerie street, Lang walked completely alone. Suddenly, a dark silhouette began trailing him.

"Target spotted," Idir signaled to Ridan and Tair. Ridan gave a firm nod.

The males quietly tailing the shadow watched as Lang turned into a pitch-black alleyway.

After walking a short distance, Lang suddenly felt a chill run down his spine. As a gust of fierce wind lunged at his back, he instantly dodged out of the way.

Lang feigned panic, crying out, "Who are you? Why are you attacking me?!"

The dark figure offered no reply, instead launching a second, far more ferocious assault. Lang’s strength was seemingly no match for the shadow’s, and he was quickly overpowered. Seizing the opportunity, the figure used an innate ability to pin Lang down, pulled out a black crystal stone, and began draining his power.

"Get him!" Idir ordered.

Ridan and the others immediately surged forward, joining Idir to strike at the dark silhouette. Sensing the sudden, massive wave of energy coming his way, the figure instantly released Lang and bolted.

Idir and his team gave chase without a moment’s delay. However, the shadow darted into a labyrinth of narrow alleys, twisting and turning like a slippery eel, making him incredibly difficult to pin down. Because the alleyways were heavily covered from above, even flying into the air didn’t give Idir a clear line of sight on his position.

Catching a fleeting glimpse of the shadow further down the path, Tair frowned. "Idir, this isn’t working. There are too many forks in these alleys. We’ll never catch him like this. How about we split up?"

Idir knit his brows slightly. "You’re right. This beastman is entirely too slippery." Turning to Ridan and Lang, he said, "Let’s do this: Ridan, Lang, each of you take a small squad to flank and corner him. The moment you spot him, signal the rest of us, and everyone will move in to back you up. Stay close and don’t separate—a squad of you should be able to hold him off for a while."

Ridan and Lang nodded. "Understood."

Tair still looked uneasy about the arrangement. "Their individual strength is on the weaker side. Idir, why don’t you and I team up as a pair, and we’ll distribute the rest of the beastmen to them? The two of us are strong enough to handle things on our own."

Idir considered it for a brief moment. "Alright."

Seeing Idir agree, the corner of Tair’s mouth twitched up into a barely perceptible smirk.

The groups split up and went into action immediately. Spotting a dark silhouette flash ahead, Idir and Tair tore after it. The shadow seemed to be intentionally leading them on, guiding them deeper and deeper into a completely isolated, pitch-black dead end.

Finding his path blocked by a wall, the dark figure finally stopped. Idir instantly fired a signal flare and let out a slight smirk. "Let’s see where you run now."

The shadow didn’t show even a flicker of panic at being cornered. Instead, he spoke up, his voice dripping with smug condescension. "Did you really think I was running away?" A look of sheer arrogance filled his eyes. "Idir, today is the day you die."

Idir let out a cold snort. "Eanu. So it’s you. It’s still up in the air who’s dying today!"

With a mocking sneer, Eanu lunged straight at Idir. The two males locked in a fierce battle, with Tair acting as Idir’s backup from the sidelines.

Mid-fight, Tair secretly shot Eanu a meaningful look. Eanu caught the cue instantly. Gathering his energy, he unleashed an incredibly powerful attack.

Idir poured his strength into blocking it, visibly straining under the pressure. "Tair! Attack him, quick!"

"On it," Tair replied, a chilling light flashing in his eyes.

As Idir focused every ounce of his energy on holding off Eanu’s assault, a sudden, overpowering wave of murderous intent surged from directly behind him. He spun his head around, his pupils shrinking to pinpricks.
