Chapter 416: We want to follow you

Nina took a closer look. She recognized a few of the elders, but the rest were unfamiliar.

"Lady Nina, Young Master Idir." The beastmen bowed to Idir and the others.

"Vair, what do you want?" Idir asked indifferently.

"Young Master, we are your late father’s old subordinates," Vair said. "Now that the old City Lord is gone, we want to continue serving you. And..." Vair and the others stole a cautious glance at Nina. "...and your female master. The management of Serpent City is a mess right now. Those elders are forming factions, scheming, and constantly fighting for power. We don’t want to follow the current City Lord anymore."

Instead of living in fear every day, it made more sense to pledge their loyalty to a stronger beastman—especially one whose city lord could heal their relatives.

"You want to follow Nina?" Idir asked. It felt to him like they wanted to follow her more than they wanted to follow him.

Vair and his companions nodded eagerly. Turning to Nina, they asked respectfully, "Lady Nina, you mentioned before that you could break the curse. Is that true?"

"Not yet, but I should be able to in the future," Nina replied.

The beastmen hesitated for a moment, then channeled their abilities, revealing curse marks similar to Idir’s.

"We are also cursed beastmen," Vair pleaded. "We’ve been hiding it carefully, terrified of being discovered. The strength you displayed earlier won over our complete trust. We are willing to swear by the Beast God to give you our absolute loyalty, if only you will help us break the curse in the future so we can live normal lives."

The others immediately chimed in. "We can swear by the Beast God too! We just hope you can save our females and cubs."

The remaining few simply wanted a strong leader to follow.

Idir stepped up behind Nina. "Nina, it’s your decision."

Nina thought it over. "If you want to follow me, that’s fine. But on the day the sacred artifact is unveiled, I’m going to take it. You will need to cooperate with me then."

As long as they were loyal, she didn’t mind having more subordinates; it just gave Idir more people to command anyway.

Vair and his men were thrilled to see her accept them. "No problem! Just give the word."

"Go back for now," Nina said. "We’ll contact you once we have a plan."

"Understood. The Young Master knows how to reach us, so we’ll head back first." Vair and his group quickly slipped away.

Nina turned to Ming and the other fathers. "Fathers, roughly when will your beastmen arrive?"

"Our warriors should be here tomorrow," Ming said.

"Same for us," Taru added.

"Ours will arrive by the day after tomorrow at the latest," Aron said.

Nina nodded. "Good. Let’s plan to use the new arrivals tomorrow night to lure out the killers."

Ming and the others brainstormed a strategy with her. Once the details were mostly hammered out, Nina turned to her males. "We don’t have much time. Fathers, arrange tomorrow’s operation tonight. Odian and I will go check on the magic array."

"Alright. Be careful out there, Nina," Taru replied.

Remembering how Yanai and the others had been spotted while tracking before, Nina decided to bring Shushu along as a double insurance policy.

She picked up Shushu. "Shushu, do you want to go on an adventure with Mother tonight? You’ll need to hide Mother and Papa Odian later."

Shushu’s eyes lit up instantly. Yes! Shushu will keep Mother perfectly hidden.

When the other cubs heard that Nina was taking Shushu out, they all wanted to go too. Linny flew onto Nina’s shoulder, nuzzling her. "Mother, Linny wants to go too. Take Linny along, please?"

The rest of the cubs chimed in, tugging at the hem of Nina’s skirt and looking up at her with pitiful eyes. "Mother, we want to go too."

Nina gave a helpless smile. "Alright, but you have to be on your best behavior. Not a peep without my permission, okay?"

Might as well bring them, she thought. It shouldn’t be too dangerous.

The cubs nodded furiously. "Deal! We promise!" They then scrambled excitedly into her arms. "Mother, let’s go, let’s go!"

Nina shook her head, tucked Linny and Momo into her pockets, and got ready to set off with Odian.

Seeing their chance, Aviel and Idir swiftly transformed into their cub forms and squeezed into Nina’s pockets as well.

Linny and Momo squirmed uncomfortably, batting at them. "Mother, the pocket is too crowded!"

Aviel gritted his teeth. "You brat, this pocket is huge. How is it crowded?" Copying Linny’s usual whiny, coddling tone, he turned to Nina. "Nina, take me too! I can keep an eye on the cubs for you."

Idir couldn’t bring himself to act that cute, so he just nodded frantically in agreement. "Me too."

Linny looked utterly disgusted. Hmph, shameless old geezers, your acting is terrible.

Hearing Aviel’s tone sent a shiver down the spines of the other mates. That dead dragon really had the thickest skin.

After a collective thought, the rest of the mates also shifted into their cub forms and looked up at her. "Nina, we want to go too."

Nina quickly put her hands up to stop them. "You guys can’t fly, so forget it. I can’t carry this many."

Aviel and Idir were fine since they fit easily into her pockets, but she couldn’t take the rest.

Odian took a step back. There was no way he was going to carry them; his arms were strictly reserved for Nina.

The mates glared at Odian. Did he really think they wanted him to hold them? They would only ever let Nina hold them. They looked at Nina’s pockets with a pang of regret, wishing they were as compact as the dead dragon and the dead snake.

Nina burst out laughing. "Alright, stay behind and guard the house. We’ll be back soon."

The mates nodded obediently. "Be careful, Nina. Come back soon."

"I will," Nina replied with a smile.

With that, she and Odian slipped into Serpent City and quickly made their way to the vicinity of the magic array.
