Chapter 549: Chapter 355: Self-Redemption
37, for a man, is the prime age.
The hot-bloodedness of youth still surges through the veins, the experience accumulated over the years finally bursting forth, with energy never running out, and the future is as dazzling as the scorching sun, without a hint of shadow.
This was Gordon at 37, the King of the Borderlands for three consecutive years from 34 to 37, from Dawn 103rd Year to 106th Year.
But it was also in this most brilliant year of his life that everything shattered.
That day was his daughter Agatha’s 14th birthday, and it was at the dinner table when Kallen reminded him that he remembered.
It’s not that he deliberately forgot or didn’t care about his daughter; on the contrary, his daughter and wife are his heart’s closest treasures.
During his most humble times when he was young, Kallen stayed by his side without leaving, later giving birth to Agatha—the little angel—providing him a complete family and continuously supporting him to reach today’s pinnacle.
It’s just that he had too many things to handle every day.
The King of the Borderlands was greatly respected and admired by many, but had little association with "stable."
This wasteland was filled with ambitious thugs, each wanting to kill him to become the boss, and some were particularly audacious, even daring to squat with a machete on the road without supernatural strengthening.
To maintain the title of King, he had unending battles to fight and people to kill every day, killing countless people over three years, sometimes up to fifty or sixty in a single day.
Anniversaries like weddings or daughter’s birthdays... were simply overwhelmed by busyness.
On his daughter’s 14th birthday, he hadn’t finished dinner before being called out by his brothers to kill, just like thousands of nights before.
What he could do was quickly deal with the senseless fools, return home as soon as possible, and hopefully, get there before midnight to eat some cake with Agatha.
That night, Gordon swiftly returned home after killing, finding a crowd of spectators downstairs and several corpses on the ground—all his appointed sentinels charged with protecting his family.
Instantly, an indescribable ominous feeling engulfed Gordon, his steps grew heavier as he rushed upstairs in panic, hoping this was just a nightmare.
However, the moment he stepped through his home doorway, his inner world completely collapsed.
The home was still that home, but the furniture was overturned and scattered, stained with blood, and a shattered corpse lay on the floor, unrecognizable and almost reduced to pulp, identified as Agatha only by her clothes.
Kallen sat slumped beside it, bloodied all over, with vacant eyes staring at their daughter’s corpse, devoid of even a trace of light.
Gordon’s consciousness felt as though shattered by an invisible hammer, his lips moved several times, wanting to say something, but unable to voice a sound, only a sharp, mournful noise emanating from his nose.
His hand trembled as he tried to touch his daughter, yet the scattered pulp left him unsure where to begin; he felt his heart suddenly ripping apart, every inch throbbing with severe pain, with despair surging like a dark tide over his mind.
Outside, a heavily injured sentinel crawled in arduously, crying and saying, "Boss, I’m sorry... After you left, a group of people suddenly came..."
"They were masked, unidentifiable, but strong, not ordinarily strong... Our people were all killed by them... Agatha too..."
Before he finished speaking, his eyes rolled back as his severe injuries claimed his last breath.
Gordon’s eyes were about to burst, hair and beard bristling, an incredibly pained expression twisting his face, his eyes burning with unprecedented rage.
Frantically, Gordon pounced on the sentinel, shaking his corpse with senseless fury, roaring like a beast, "Who did it?! Who are they?! Speak! Who did it?!!"
The sentinel was already dead, incapable of responding.
Gordon then lunged at Kallen, tightly gripping her shoulders, leaving bruises from the unconscious pressure, his voice trembling with a sob as he pleaded, "Kallen, who did it? Did you see them? Tell me! I want to kill them all!!!"
"Heh... hehehe..." Kallen let out a mournful chuckle, her dim eyes looking at Gordon gloomily, "Gordon, why are you crying? Isn’t this the life you desired?"
"Today you kill this, tomorrow you kill that, killing for three years; isn’t it tedious by now? Now it’s your daughter’s turn to be killed. Perfect, you have motivation again to kill; you should be thrilled."
Gazing into Kallen’s vacant eyes, Gordon felt his heart collapse, his throat emitting sobbing cries, as if pouring out all his sorrow and despair, "Kallen... Please... I... I did it for you guys..."
Kallen smiled wryly, "Oh no no, Gordon, please don’t say it was for us. This is the path you chose; no one forced you."
"Neither Agatha nor I ever said we wanted you to be wealthy, nor did we ever wish for you to be revered on top. Even if you were still the humble little lackey you once were, Agatha and I would always love you."
"But what about you? Do you love us? You always proclaim it’s for a better life for us, but what I see is you disappointing us over and over again, constantly focused on your prestige, even slamming the door and leaving on your daughter’s birthday."
"Agatha always said she hoped daddy could spend more time with her, but you always said you were busy... All’s well now, Agatha will never cling to you again; you’re free to focus on your own affairs."
