Chapter 540: Chapter 350: First Encounter with Life
Looking back at the past, the memories are like smoke.
The small operating room was filled with the smell of disinfectant, a young girl lay prone on the surgical table, her back had been slit open, and among the blood and flesh, the severely damaged spine was visible.
Gordon carefully nudged his glasses up with his shoulder to maintain the sterile condition of his gloves. He looked at the girl’s broken spine and shook his head, saying, "One arm is broken, the spine is also fractured. How did you get beaten like this? Who was so cruel?"
Due to the lack of anesthetics in the clinic, the girl was only under local anesthesia, and judging by the cold sweat constantly seeping from her forehead, the anesthesia seemed incomplete.
She bit her teeth hard, her gaze suppressed and icy, squeezing a few words out from between her teeth, "Those Inner City dog Sheriffs beat me."
Gordon sighed, "You smuggled in, didn’t you... What about your family?"
The girl said coldly, "Dead."
Gordon: "Both parents are dead?"
The girl: "I only had a mom, no dad. The man who fathered me was at best a dog."
Gordon: "You kid... saying your dad is a dog, then weren’t you born from a dog?"
The girl snapped angrily, "Annoying! Do your surgery!"
"Oh wow, small stature but a hot temper." Gordon chuckled and didn’t argue with the girl. He somewhat regretfully said, "Kid, to be honest, with these injuries, there’s no way to save your spine and arm."
The girl fell silent for a while before asking in a low tone, "Am I going to be disabled?"
Gordon deliberately asked back, "If so, what would you do?"
Using a tone of calmness beyond her years, the girl said, "No big deal, just keep living."
Gordon continued to tease her, "Oh? Living like that, is it interesting?"
The girl said indifferently, "My life was fought for by my mom who sold her dignity. Even if it’s for her, I’ll eat garbage and drink dirty water to stay alive."
Gordon showed approval in his eyes, and his tone became light-hearted, "Alright, kid, just for your spirit, I’ll give you two treasures today."
Using his elbow, he nudged open the semi-concealed mechanical packaging box beside him and retrieved a set of bionic spine and arm, saying, "Ordinary Management Level 3 prosthetics, though it’s the lowest tier stuff, at least it can replace the damaged original parts and allow you to stand up."
Picking up the necessary tools, he started the basic prosthetic modification surgery on the girl, amputating her original parts and installing corresponding prosthetics.
Throughout the process, even as sweat soaked the surgical table, the girl stubbornly remained silent, her astonishing perseverance made Gordon give her a sideways glance.
After the surgery, the girl stayed at the clinic to recuperate, and they hardly talked.
On one hand, Gordon was busy, as other wounded frequently came into the clinic needing his care.
On the other hand, the girl spent most of her time sleeping to heal, only when Gordon went to collect the food bowls, the empty bowl indicated she had awakened and eaten.
A week later, the girl was already able to move around. The first thing she said when she saw Gordon was, "Old thing, thanks. I’ll remember this life-saving favor. For these prosthetics, including surgery and medicine costs, how much in total?"
Gordon shook his head, "It’s okay, in my place, paying or not paying is fine, you can go."
The girl said straightforwardly, "Just answer directly what I asked."
Gordon had long been accustomed to the girl’s straightforward nature, giving a quick smile, "All costs combined, let’s say it’s one hundred thousand."
"I see." This figure was incredibly shocking on the frontier, yet the girl didn’t act surprised, she simply said, "Can’t give it all at once, I’ll pay in installments over the years until it’s all paid off."
Gordon smiled, not taking her words to heart.
He’s heard similar words too many times.
Many injured patients are all talk before leaving, promising they’d pay up, but few ever returned even to bring a fruit basket as a gesture.
Before the girl left, Gordon seemed to remember something and asked, "By the way, you haven’t told me your name yet."
The girl: "Dongdong."
"Dongdong?" Gordon laughed, "What a strange name."
The girl raised an eyebrow, "Funny? Then laugh while you can, soon you won’t have the chance."
Gordon curiously asked, "Oh? Why is that?"
The girl poked at her chest, lifted her chin and smiled, "Because one day, I will make a name for myself."
"By then, from the frontier to Sky City, the world will know the name Dongdong, and everyone will feel awe instead of laughing."
...
New Moon City’s Rust Wall District, lacking official resettlement points established by the authorities, refugees fleeing to the Inner City from the frontier could only temporarily live on the streets.
Previously during evacuation, many refugees were injured, some sustaining minor cuts and bruises, others attacked by ferocious beasts causing limb loss.
These refugees from the frontier didn’t have an Inner City identity or money, making it impossible for public hospitals which require registration to take them, nor would private hospitals focused on revenue accept them, leaving them helplessly stranded on the streets.
Fortunately, numerous volunteers provided help, setting up temporary medical zones along many streets. Nearby sympathetic citizens and charities brought in some common medications for the wounded among the refugees to receive treatment.
Among the volunteers were Inner City People and those from the frontier, those with clinical experience operated directly, while the less experienced helped out, quickly getting the medical zone up and running.
At this time, Gordon was on the frontline treating the wounded.
He had previously listened to the warnings of Wolf Fang, sneaking into the Inner City early through the sewer, thus by chance avoiding this major disaster.
And when frontier compatriots flooded into the Inner City, urgently needing medical personnel, he stood up unwaveringly.
The environment of the temporary medical zone was far inferior to a hospital, even worse than his small clinic on the frontier, with terrible sanitary conditions, limited medicine supplies, and rudimentary medical equipment.
But to the wounded, even a poor environment was better than sitting and waiting for death, so a continuous stream of injured was brought in, each doctor working at full capacity.
Gordon wore a coat long stained red by blood, nearby stretchers were packed with injured, moans filled the whole room.
Gordon, already aged, had been treating patients for too long, his furrowed brow glistened with sweat, and the bloodshot tiredness in his eyes turned his eyeballs crimson, yet his hands didn’t dare stop moving.
Then, a doctor walked in and said, "Sir, you haven’t rested for over thirty hours, let me take over."
Gordon shook his head, saying hoarsely, "It’s okay, go help the others."
After speaking, he was about to fetch some medicine.
The doctor stepped forward to stop him, advising, "Sir, your hands are already shaking, pushing yourself further is irresponsible to your body and to the wounded, go rest."
Only then did Gordon realize his hand was uncontrollably trembling, making it difficult to even grip the medicine bottles.
