Chapter 320: Call of the Wilds

As Violet and Luna led their group deeper and deeper into the Endless Forest they were near constantly attacked.

Be it from local Beast Lords for the crime of walking through their territory, to the generally more powerful lone Lords that wandered the Wilds by themselves.

Regardless of who attacked them the companions and their entourage defeated them all.

It was a brutal treck. They could hardly travel in peace for more than a couple of hours before some new beast attacked them.

This region of the Endless Forest truly lived up to its reputation of a danger zone.

But along with dangers came growth.

Levels came pouring in for everyone, particularly the dragons. They all participated in the battles with almost feverish enthusiasm, it did not matter how tired they may be, when a foe approached they were instantly ready to fight.

As such they had all grown tremendously over the past week since they had entered the forest.

As opposed to when they had to seek out fire sto do battle with whilst traversing the Kingdom, here, in the wilds. The fights found them.

Naturally it was not only the young dragons that grew tremendously during this time. The former slaves all grew in strength, even the older and less combat oriented beastkin managed to level up.

Most of the older folk held a limited selection of support and utility oriented skills from their time as slaves. They had then improved on this to enable them to effectively assist their younger counterparts and the dragons.

Now after being forced to assist in some of the more desperate battles, all of them held at least one or two combat support spells and skills.

Because of them now able to assist with the frequent battles all of the older beastkin suddenly surged in levels, rapidly able to breach level 40 and entering tier 3.

Reaching that level had done wonders for the elderly. The surge in stats from the frequent levels had reinvigorated them, now even the oldest amongst them, Margret who had been the slave who had first spoke up to Violet and Luna when they had battled in the dragon farm, was quite proficient with support and healing magic.

So whilst the days of fighting and travel were brutal and tiering, they still soldiered on. Continually growing in strength and capability as time passed by.

Yet on the one week mark since entering the Endless Forest, something changed.

Violet had just finished fighting a particularly troublesome Beast Lord, it was a massive Harpy Eagle type beast, several meters in size and able to fly through the forest with enviable ease, utilising the massive trunks as platforms to alter its flight path in mighty leaps and glides.

As she stood there catching her breath and watching Luna finish off yet another Beast Lord that had attacked them at the same time. That a system screen had appeared before Violet, a screen that she had only seen the likes of once before.

Damnger has encroached into the Wilds, a vast force capable of harming the natural order of things is aiming to tame the wilds.

Violet blinked at the new quest she had been given. Wondering about the cause of her receiving such a quest, the system had seemed to understand her intentions and had tailored a quest for exactly what she already intended to do.

Yet it seemed to phrase it in such a way that implied that the Kingdom was capable of much more harm than she had previously believed.

They intended to tame the wilds! She didn’t even know how such a thing was even possible. Yet apparently it was, and it was not something that the system, or perhaps the Wilds? Wanted.

Whatever the case was, Violet found herself smiling at the system screen.

Yes it had slightly wounded her pride by implying that she alone was not enough to sway the outcome of the impending battle against the Kingdom.

Yet it had suggested two possible solutions and had even given a deadline.

However, whilst Violet would dearly want to be able to evolve into tier 5 before the upcoming battle, she was not optimistic about her chances.

She had grown, quite considerably considering the timeframe yet she was only now level 138, she would need to gain 12 more levels and fully develop her own domain to be able to advance into tier 5.

Whilst she had made some progress on that regard, she was not confident in completing her domain and gaining enough experience in only 8 days, that didn’t even take into consideration the fact that she would undoubtedly have to spend quite some time actually evolving.

With that in mind she sadly had no confidence in achieving the second option to complete the quest.

That left only a single option remaining to her, at least according to the system which was apparently omnipotent and all knowing.

That being the option to recruit aid.

Now what kind of aid this implies could likely take any number of forms. From seeking out and receiving the aid of another of the Wild cities, saddly she was not optimistic about that given she didn’t know where any other cities were.

That coupled with the difficulty of actually convincing said city to send an army out to assist.

No violet did not truly consider that an option, she instead opted to go for a much more simplistic approach.

An approach that she had actually taken several times now, that being seeking the aid of beasts.

She had worked together with beasts a few times now to achieve her goals. First all the way back during the event in the Elemental Valleys.

Back then she had ended up recruiting a small band of beasts that followed alongside her as they all rushed towards the center of the valley. She had not intended to actually recruit any beasts, yet they had just naturally followed her. Thinking back they likely instinctively felt her afinity to the wilds, that swayed their opinions enough to try following her lead in that dangerous environment.

More recently, Violet and Luna had actively approached and recruited the aid of Steelclaw with the assult on the dragon farm.

That act had been both greatly beneficial and, perhaps, it had been a turning point for Violet’s growth.

After all the quest was called ’Call of the Wilds’ so, would it not make sense for a quest under that name to lean towards seeking the aid of those that lived in the wilds? It made sense to Violet.

Spotting that Luna was done with her own battle Violet quickly filled her in on the quest details, only for Luna to chuckle as she spoke.

"Well I also have the quest, seems like thanks to our companions bond we will often be given the same quests. But I do agree, o think we need to go about ’recruiting’ other beasts to aid us in our final objective."

Violet was momentarily surprised that Luna had received the same quest, then she smiled wide, her sword like teeth gleaming in the dappled sunlight shining through the canopy far above.

"That’s good! We will get double the reward!" She exclaimed with delight at that. Violet’s words grew more serious as she spoke up again.

"I’m glad you agree, now the question seems to just be, how exactly are we supposed to recruit wild beasts? None of the ones we have encountered so far seem all to willing to battle to the death."

At that Luna just looked at Violet funnily as her head tilted to the side, she then spoke up with confusion in her voice, as if explaining to a child.

"So just beat it up but don’t kill it, then just force it to follow you. Should work wonders for the dumber beasts, should be willing to talk if we encounter any smart beasts though."

Violet blinked at her companions reply, her mouth opened as if about to say something, only to snap her jaws shut a moment later.

Then she promptly turned away from Luna and walked over to the dragons and beastkin to begin getting them ready to move out once again.

Meanwhile Luna stood there in silence for several moments, just staring at Violet as she hurriedly walked away.

At first Luna was slightly offended that Violet had just walked away without replying. Then she felt a flicker of her companions emotions through their bond, a bond that Violet had suddenly actively tried to limit.

Yet she had not don’t it well enough that Luna had been able to understand that the big dumb dragon was simply embarrassed that she had not thought of such a simple solution herself, that fact caused Luna to laugh as she slowly returned to the group.
