Chapter 296: Eggs, Planning and Preparation

Within the room sat 12 cushions, atop which rested 12 large eggs, each one with its own unique colouration and pattern. From simple base shades such as red and blue, to a more complex melody of colours that respresented the natural affinity of the beast the grew within.

Violet felt her throat hitch as she gazed upon these eggs, her mind awash with memories not belonging to her.

That ball of etherial memories granted to her by the ancient dragons pulsed in resonance with her emotions, long lost memories of those same ancient dragons gazing upon their children’s eggs with love and affection.

Violet found herself lost in the memories for a moment as she slowly took in the beautiful eggs standing before her.

Luna too was observing the eggs with clear interest. Taking time to carefully view each egg in turn whilst using the barest flicker of her presence to better understand the beings that resided within them.

Her focus was drawn to one in particular, its shell was a deep azure blue with white striations running like veins down its surface. Luna felt the faintest of resonances with the egg making her sure that that dragon would be born with a speciality that related to ice or cold.

Violet on the other hand was drawn to one other egg that sparked a different memory, this one being her own and not one gifted to her.

It rested on the far right of the group, its shell being noticeably smaller than any of the others present. Its shell however was a beautiful pink, almost lavender in shade, reminding Violet of her own egg.

Violet only had vague memories of the day she hatched, her mind still not fully cognisant at the time. Yet she did still remember some facts, one of them being the vibrant pink of her egg, or as she thought of it way back then her prison.

She surpressed a chuckle at that memory yet a smile still curled at her lips unbidden.

"As you can see we currently have a selection of eggs to chose from, whilst the colouration is not a guarantee of what speciality the beast will have upon hatching, it does provide a solid baseline.

For example, the two red eggs we have here are more than likely going to spawn fire dragons, whilst the green egg will likely either produce a wind or nature dragon." Explained the butler in a professional and clinical tone.

"Now do you have any preference or want to ask any questions regarding any egg that catches your eye?"

Violet passed for a moment, carefully considering the eggs before her. Truly she didn’t exactly care which she picked as she fully intended to rescue every single dragon and egg present when the time was right. But she should still make an effort to not be seen as suspicious.

She began walking the line of eggs, occasionally placing a palm against them as she gently probed the eggs with her presence, gaining a rudimentary understanding of the nature of the dragons within.

Eventually she stopped before the pink egg that seemed oh so familiar to her, she cautiously extended her presence into the egg and felt her eyes open wide in surprise.

When she was investigating the other eggs she had been able to feel their redimentary minds as they slowly developed within their home, yet, when she investigated the pink shell she felt more than a basic instinct from within. She felt the flickers of intelligence, a spark that was undeniably there, she felt her pace quicken in excitement and her smile grew.

She coughed lightly into her hand as she tried to reign in her excitement at the discovery. "Tell me what you can of this one?" She asked the butler.

He carefully looked at it for a prolonged moment before slowly speaking. "That one... is, unique. Very rarely a beast will be born that does not match most known specialities or elements. We can never be sure how they will develop. But it is a fair assumption that it will differ from most, be that in a positive light or negative no one knows."

His words seemed geared towards trying to dissuade her from selecting this egg, a act which only solidified her desire to save the poor creature from the kingdoms hands.

Violet felt her smile grow once more as she turned to face the butler and spoke. "Then I shall be choosing this egg as my own, if it is unique then it shall suit me all the better."

The butler hesitated for a moment, seemingly debating if he should try to dissuade her further or not before straightening up and replying with a shallow bow. "As you wish Lady Violet. I shall ensure that this one is set aside for you."

Violet smiled at that and after giving the egg a long look and gently caressing the egg with both her hand and presence, she turned back around and made her way over to Luna.

"Very well then. Is their anything else that is required to do before we depart?" Asked Luna.

The butler shook his head at her words. "Nothing my Ladies, we simply request that you make the time to come back within the next 4 days. We believe that they should be hatching anytime between 4-6 days from now. Accommodations shall be provided here so that you will be able to witness the hatching and imprint on the babies as they emerge from their eggs."

Hearing that the two companions nodded, Violet speaking up. "Alright then, if there is nothing else then? Would you lead us towards the exit?"

So they followed Harvey back through the hallway and out into the mid afternoon sun, from there the butler led them back towards the main gate and the awaiting carriage.

Yet when they arrived Violet made a show of looking up into the sky and the copse of trees some distance away. "Hmm I think we shall make our own way back to the city. It has been a while since we last went on a hunt." She then tirned towards the carriage driver with a predatory smile.

"You are free to make your own way back without us, we shall be along on our own time. If you could come collect us from the Sirens Rest in 4 days time however, that would be most appreciated."

The carriage driver looked at the two girls, taking note of the exquisite magical ribs of the winged one and the fine but practical outfit of the white haired one, then he simply shrugged. "As you say mi’lady. I wish you the best of luck on your hunt and shall see you in a few days."

Harvey’s composure almost broke upon hearing that the two girls would be going out for a hunt. Something that would only be undertaken by nobles with great preparation and whilst accompanied by multiple guards.

Then he remembered the look of utter calm in their eyes when they had disregarded the young master, even when surrounded by multiple tier 4 guards and he understood. These two were not mere sheltered girls, but warriors that had faced death multiple times and come out all the stronger for it.

For people such as them a relatively low level area like this likely did not pose any true challenge. With that in mind he once again bowed towards them as he spoke up.

"Then I too wish you both a successful hunt and hope to see you again soon. Good day my Ladies." With that he turned on his heel and strode away, at the same time the main gates began to swing open.

Violet and Luna shared a smile as they strode out of the gates and into the mostly tamed wilderness that surrounded the city.

The two moved swiftly, a clear destination in mind. The nearby copse of trees was actually just the outskirts of a larger section of forest that was home to a selection of relatively strong beasts.

Normally it would not be all too rare to spot a stray tier 4 when approaching the central sections of those woods. Yet as they got closer they instantly felt the presence of a number of Lord level beasts prowl my around the outskirts.

The reason for these beasts appeared on the outskirts, away from their usual territory would be a cause for concern for Sonantis if they were to bother going out to scout the area out. Yet it made perfect sense to the two companions as to why these apex beings had so readily abandoned their domains.

The answer was simply because they were no longer at the top of the food chain in this area, something much more powerful than them had recently moved in.

Something, or it should be someone that the girls were heading towards.

The companions avoided the tier 4 beasts, not bothering to start a fight. They rushed into the heart of the forest, as they did they took note of several flowers that glittered in the dappled sunlight, reminiscent of the gleam off metal.

It did not take the two long before they arrived in the centre of the forest, here they waited, patiently waiting as Violet started a fire and pulled out a giant chunk of fish to begin roasting over the flames.

Soon enough a new presence washed over the too, a familiar presence. And they were then greeted by the mental link to the owner of said presence. "Is it time?" Came a powerful voice in their heads.

Turning around they beheld a truly massive wolf, its fur rippling with steel fur as it silently emerged from nearby shadows.

Violet smiled up at Steelclaw as she replied. "Very soon, yes. Just a few more days and we can make our move."
