Chapter 170: Chapter 133: This is a True Genius
It was not yet four in the afternoon, but there was no telling when the Goblins would launch their attack. The front line was already on high alert, so it was best for them to get there sooner rather than later.
Lin Mo’s Silver Radiance Squad and Landon’s Cyan Orchid Squad were, of course, both heading to the front line.
The few Level 3 Professional Assassins from the town also went with them.
They had actually been stationed at the front line for the past few days. However, their role as Assassins hadn’t been very significant then; they were only responsible for dealing with some of the Mutated Goblins that got close to the battle lines, preventing these powerful individuals from inflicting too much damage on the ordinary soldiers.
A wide main road led to the front, so they were able to take a carriage. In less than an hour, they arrived at their destination.
Pulling back the carriage curtain revealed a somber, lifeless scene.
After many days of fighting, the soldiers had suffered heavy casualties. Their morale was no longer as high as it was at the beginning, and the eyes of many were filled with confusion or numbness.
They had personally witnessed too many of their comrades die brutal deaths at the hands of the Goblins. They themselves had all been wounded to some degree or had experienced harrowing situations. With each day of fighting, the fear in their hearts deepened.
Most importantly, despite fighting for so long and taking many Goblin heads, it seemed to have no effect at all. The number of Goblins they faced each day remained the same, as if they could never be completely wiped out.
This was the most frustrating problem when facing the Goblin race. The first few days of killing were satisfying, but when the numbers never seemed to decrease no matter how many they killed, the smiles quickly faded. The longer it went on, the stronger the sense of defeat grew, gradually eroding their will to fight.
"This battle can’t drag on like this any longer..."
Landon was deeply moved as he observed the soldiers’ condition.
Otherwise, in a few more days, the army’s morale would completely collapse.
"They’re coming!"
From not far off came the thunderous sound of the Goblin Army’s advance. The various positions instantly went on alert. Under orders, the listless soldiers forced themselves to rally and prepare for battle.
The reinforcements, meanwhile, were assigned their positions with extreme speed.
Landon, as a Mage, was placed in the core of the battle line to maximize the effectiveness of his Magic. His team members followed to support him.
Feney remained in the rear, responsible for providing Healing to combatants in urgent need of aid.
Lin Mo joined the "Assassin detachment." Including the five Level 3 Professional Assassins and Shefilya as the main force, the seven of them were responsible for scouting the enemy’s rear and looking for opportunities to carry out assassinations.
However, unlike the other Adventurers who went directly into battle, they first had to hold a short meeting to exchange intelligence.
"First, we need to get a clear picture of the situation in the rear. We’ve been trying to do this for the past few days and have gathered some intelligence."
One of the Assassins said, "Based on our current reconnaissance, we can confirm the enemy has at least twenty Bronze Goblins!"
"That many?!"
Lin Mo was startled.
"That number includes those at the Quasi-Bronze Level. The actual number of official Bronze Level Goblins should be about half that."
"That’s a relief..."
Lin Mo breathed a sigh of relief. After all, a proper Bronze Level Goblin was basically Level 3 at minimum.
’If there really were more than twenty Goblins with a Threat Level of 3 and above...’
He glanced at Shefilya, who had been silent the entire time.
’Then again, with her here, it might not be that difficult.’
"What about the specific types?"
"Among the official Bronze Level ones we’ve spotted, there are six different Warrior Class individuals and four primarily Defense-focused Knight Class individuals."
"There are also Assassin Class individuals."
Lin Mo recalled the Bronze Goblin he’d taken out yesterday. "This type looks very similar to an Ordinary Goblin. They’re almost impossible to spot when mixed in with the others."
As for whether yesterday’s was the only one of its kind, it was hard to say.
"What about the target?"
Shefilya, who had been silent until now, finally spoke. The target she was referring to was, of course, the mastermind behind the Goblin Army—the Goblin Caster.
"That thing is too cunning. We haven’t found any trace of it yet."
"You didn’t find it near the Defense Class Bronze Goblins?"
Lin Mo asked.
According to standard logic, the duty of these defense-oriented Goblins should be to protect the core.
"We specifically searched those areas. We even nearly suffered casualties because of it, but we still came up empty."
’It seems the enemy is fully prepared,’ Lin Mo thought. ’It even knows how to use reverse logic.’
’Goblins that can use the ’art of war,’ as expected!’
"Finding that thing is not going to be easy..."
an Assassin sighed. Days of fruitless attempts had filled him with a sense of defeat.
"Actually, we don’t necessarily have to go looking for it... Making it come out on its own works just as well."
Lin Mo said suddenly.
"Come out on its own?"
The other Assassins looked at him, their faces filled with confusion.
An opponent they couldn’t even find—why would it reveal itself willingly?
"Kill its underlings, and it will naturally get anxious."
Shefilya was the first to understand his meaning. "So there’s no need to overthink it. We just start killing."
"This..."
The other Assassins didn’t know whether to laugh or cry. "Young lady, and you, brother... Bronze Level Goblins aren’t that easy to kill."
Especially when the ones showing themselves are Warriors and Knights, the most difficult types to assassinate.
"That’s true, but it’s not like they’re impossible to kill, right?"
For an ordinary Assassin, assassinating a Warrior or even a Knight of the same level was indeed a difficult, almost impossible task. But Lin Mo was different.
