Ye You halted, as Yun Wang scampered out from behind him and yelled above, "It’s me, I am back from my mission. Quickly, open the gates."
"Brat, you really kept us waiting!" A familiar voice echoed from the city walls, followed by bustling noises from within and then the sound of the door opening.
Yun Wang turned back and grimaced at Ye You, "It seems my father."
Ye You nodded, but didn’t say anything. He gazed up at the giant black characters lettering "Divine Dog City" above the lofty city gate, his heart calm yet filled with excitement.
The Divine Dog City, which always faithfully protected the Royal Phoenix City, and the zealous Panhu family.
"Crack, crack," a loud noise echoed as the grand city gate was flung open, two squadrons of guards lined up, and in the middle, a commanding general in his forties with a broad face and a wide nose stepped forth, his expression brimming with excitement.
"Father!" Yun Wang welcomed him with a grin, and reported proudly, "I have brought the person back safe."
Ye You’s situation was still a secret, so Yun Wang didn’t dare to mention it before this crowd.
"Good job, well done!" Yun Wang’s father, General Kuiyong, loudly praised him after which his large heavy palm fiercely patted Yun Wang’s shoulder.
"Ouch!" Yun Wang cried out in pain, and pitifully said, "Father, be gentle, I am injured."
That shoulder had been hit by the Tail Feather Golden Needle of the Moon Spirit Golden Peacock.
A flicker of concern flashed in General Kuiyong’s eyes, but he immediately barked, "That small matter made you injured? You disgrace, go on, we will talk more inside."
After saying that, General Kuiyong cast a deep look at the black... leopard behind Yun Wang and subtly gave a nod that was visible only to him.
Yun Wang, followed by Ye You carrying Qin Sisi on his back, entered the Clan Leader’s Mansion without any obstacles, led by General Kuiyong.
By this time it was late night, yet the mansion was still brightly lit, and everyone gathered in Chief Puchen’s study, waiting anxiously for news from Ye You and Yun Wang.
The cups on the table were filled with fragrant tea, but no one was in the mood to appreciate it.
Puchen understood the gravity of the situation and had already dismissed all irrelevant people from the mansion, leaving only a few trusted guards outside their chamber to deter trespassers.
Puchen also dispatched his son, Yun Wang’s father, to wait at the city gate to welcome Yun Wang back.
Suddenly, the silence of the night was cut by hastened footfalls. Everybody in the study at once stood up, peering nervously at the door as Puchen also moved some steps towards the entrance.
The study door was abruptly swung open, and General Kuiyong rushed in, trying hard to suppress his excitement. Lowering his voice, he said, "They have returned, Yun Wang has returned."
Everybody present let out a sigh of relief, but the tension immediately returned.
By General Kuiyong’s countenance, it seemed Prince Yeyou had returned. That was a good thing, but what could be the condition of Prince Yeyou, who had been cursed and missing for a year?
General Kuiyong did not keep them waiting long; as soon as he announced their return, he moved away allowing Yun Wang to enter. His clothes were ragged, his arm bloodied, but he was smiling and made a victory sign at the people in the room.
Then, a creature of enormous silhouette resembling a black panther lumbered into the room, carrying a completely blackened figure on its back.
Everyone in the room was rooted to their spot, watching the black panther in disbelief.
Could this be... Prince Yeyou?
"It’s been a while, everyone." The black panther raised its head, blinked its purple eyes, and addressed the room in a gentle tone.
"Yeyou, is it really you?" A beautiful young woman in a pink dress sprinted towards Ye You, squatted beside him, gazing into his eyes as a light welled up in her beautiful eyes.
"Meng Yu." Ye You gently nodded at her, without losing any politeness.
His gaze sweeping over each face in the room; the elderly Clan Leader Puchen, the graying Chief Gelun, the facially broad General Kuiyong, the ever-smiling Yun Wang, the stocky Lie Feng, the blooming Meng Yu, the serene Jing Jing...
If their intent remained unwavering, he would remember to repay them in the future.
As Jing Jing saw Ye You observing everyone in turn, she suddenly remembered something and rushed to explain to Ye You, "Your Majesty, brother Qing Xun is currently taking care of brother Jun Ying, so he couldn’t come."
Ye You asked with concern, "Is Qing Xun okay?"
During the demonic beast tide at Birdsong Forest, Qing Xun and Jun Ying had deliberately obstructed the beasts to buy him time to escape. Although Ye You didn’t say anything, he had been worried about them all along.
Jing Jing’s face softened as she softly replied, "He’s fine, just some minor injuries. But brother Jun Ying was seriously injured and needs proper care."
Ye You nodded in response, looked up and said, "Gratitude not expressed is not gratitude forgotten. I have remembered all of your kindness. It is late today, and there is a lot to talk about. For now, everyone, please rest and we can continue tomorrow."
After saying this, Ye You turned to Yun Wang and said, "Yun Wang, go find Qing Xun to treat your wound."
Before Yun Wang could respond, Clan Leader Puchen said, "No need, no need, I can handle this minor injury."
"Grandpa, are you up for it?" asked Yun Wang doubtfully.
The healing magic skills were best provided by Wood and Water Attributes, while the intrinsic attribute of the Panhu family was Earth Attribute.
Hearing this, Clan Leader Puchen gave a kick to Yun Wang’s bottom and barked, "If not, how could I be your grandpa? Come along with me."
Yun Wang howled in pain, his face contorted as he limped behind Clan Leader Puchen.
The others heard Ye You’s statement and began to disperse after exchanging a few words. After all, the safe return of Ye You was already the best news of the day.
Meng Yu beamed, presuming her smile to be the prettiest. Just as she was about to say a few words of affection and concern to Ye You, he turned to Jing Jing and earnestly said, "Jing Jing, my friend is hurt. Could you please help me heal her?"
Jing Jing looked at Ye You with surprise. In her memory, Ye You never seemed to have used the words "please."
"Alright, find a room to lay her down, and let me check on her," Jing Jing responded gently.
Ye You immediately turned to General Kuiyong and asked, "General Kuiyong, could you prepare a room for us?"
General Kuiyong nodded and replied, "No problem, your room is ready. Please follow me."
General Kuiyong gestured invitingly and led the way.
Ye You followed him with Qin Sisi on his shoulder and Jing Jing walked beside Ye You.
Following the guide of General Kuiyong, they proceeded together towards a courtyard deep inside the Clan Leader Mansion.
