Looking at Mr. Fu’s triumphant demeanor, Qin Sisi hesitated, then summoned the courage to say, "When Mrs. Fu met you, she was single, wasn’t she?"
"Of course," Mr. Fu promptly replied, "I asked her. Like me, she was single. She had plenty of suitors but dismissed them all, finding those young men too immature."
Qin Sisi slightly knitted her brow. Yu Feng said Lu Meilin was his wife, but Mr. Fu claimed he knew Lu Meilin when she was single. Who was lying?
Seeing Qin Sisi’s changed expression, Boss Zheng gave Mr. Fu a smile, then turned to Qin Sisi saying, "Sisi, since everything is settled, we should head home early."
Snapping back to reality, Qin Sisi nodded and replied, "Good."
By now all three had finished breakfast. Mr. Fu politely asked if they would like to stay longer, but Boss Zheng naturally declined, agreeing that they would meet again another time.
Counter to what Qin Sisi expected, Mr. Fu didn’t wait to pay his remuneration but handed the money to Boss Zheng without delay. Due to their friendship, he probably felt uncomfortable delaying payment.
However, it wasn’t a substantial amount; just ten thousand in total, with Qin Sisi receiving seven thousand.
On the way back, Boss Zheng driving the car asked Qin Sisi, "Sisi, is Mr. Fu’s problem entirely solved now?"
Qin Sisi choose her words carefully before replying, "The problem in his house has been solved indeed, but there are minor issues that are unrelated to him."
"So... does it concern his wife?" thought Boss Zheng, penetrating to the heart of the matter with his perceptive mind and keen observation.
Qin Sisi didn’t immediately know how to respond.
Speaking in a gentle tone, Boss Zheng reassured her, "Don’t worry. If you don’t want to talk, then don’t. But Mr. Fu adores his wife. If you offend her, I’m afraid he might turn against you."
A chill ran through Qin Sisi. She had not considered this possibility.
But Boss Zheng’s warning didn’t deter her. She had every intention of provoking Lu Meilin.
After a moment, Qin Sisi replied, "Thank you for your concern, Uncle Zheng. I’ll keep it in mind."
She had magic and Ye You by her side now. Even if Mr. Fu did seek to harm her, he could only send ordinary people, who wouldn’t be able to harm her.
Looking down at Ye You, he was also watching Qin Sisi with gentle and comforting eyes.
With this, Qin Sisi felt her already unwavering heart calm and solidify.
She must capture the ghost, help Yu Feng, and investigate Lu Meilin.
Seeing Qin Sisi’s steadiness, Boss Zheng sighed and refrained from further comments. He warned her to be cautious and keep investigations discreet, not to let Mr. Fu or Mrs. Fu notice.
Without hesitation, Qin Sisi sincerely thanked Boss Zheng.
When they returned home, Qin Sisi was eager to communicate with Yu Feng, so Ye You drew a mark on Yu Feng’s forehead that would shield him from sunlight and the Yang energy in the air. Then they brought Yu Feng out from Portable Space.
Arriving under the unexpected sunlight, Yu Feng was initially taken aback. Only after he realized everything was normal did he calm down slightly, and asked Qin Sisi curiously, "Mage, what happened?"
Staying calm, Qin Sisi said, "Don’t worry. I cast a spell on you. Now you can appear during the day."
Yu Feng relaxed, replying, "Thank you, Mage."
Waving off the formalities, Qin Sisi then asked, "Before you thank me, answer this: is Lu Meilin really your wife?"
Yu Feng’s face changed, yet his tone was absolutely assured, "Of course. We are college classmates who married right after graduation."
Yu Feng’s eyes were bright and unshifting, he didn’t appear to be lying.
Frowning, Qin Sisi continued, "But, Mr. Fu said, he met Lu Meilin last National Day, she was single then."
"Impossible!" Yu Feng strongly negated Qin Sisi’s words, his emotions growing agitated, "We got married the National Day of the year before. Last National Day was our wedding anniversary, and we even went on a trip."
Stumped with increasing confusion, Qin Sisi then pressed on, "Did you two go on a trip for the entire National Day holiday?"
"No," Yu Feng’s voice became softer, "Her job was quite demanding. She even worked the night shift on October 1st. After playing for just one day, we returned."
"Your wife is a nurse, right?" Qin Sisi asked again. Despite knowing the chance of the men misidentifying the woman was slim, their contradicting accounts were hard to reconcile.
"Yes." Yu Feng answered without any hesitation.
But when he uttered the word "nurse", Qin Sisi caught onto the fleeting insight.
Yu Feng had died from penicillin allergy. For a nurse, procuring penicillin should pose no difficulty.
With this in mind, a bold guess formed in Qin Sisi’s mind.
If neither man was lying, then there was only one possibility left: the woman both men cherished was lying to both of them at the same time.
Qin Sisi mulled it over for a bit, then raised her head to Yu Feng, "I need to investigate this matter further. Please wait for further news from me."
Yu Feng’s expression soured as he nodded in silence.
Knowing Yu Feng’s understanding of these affairs was limited, Qin Sisi didn’t expect more clues from him. With that, Ye You sent him back into the Portable Space.
Then, Qin Sisi sat down on the couch, frowning in silence.
"What are you thinking about?" Ye You asked softly.
After a pause, Qin Sisi said, "I suspect Lu Meilin killed Yu Feng."
"But you’re unwilling to believe it, right?" Ye You’s gentle voice, like a white feather, easily hit the bullseye in Qin Sisi’s heart.
Qin Sisi slowly nodded and said heavily, "Yu Feng said they were a loving couple."
Ye You hummed thoughtfully, his violet eyes dark and inscrutable as he said, "We will know who is lying when we revisit First Mansion tonight."
Qin Sisi was briefly taken aback, but quickly grasped his intention, "Do you want to read Lu Meilin’s memory?"
Ye You nodded, his deep voice stating, "If she truly is Yu Feng’s killer, only she knows the real cause of his death."
Qin Sisi went silent, looking out of the window. Today was overcast, the sky gloomy without a hint of life.
The beautiful face of Lu Meilin flashed before her eyes. Qin Sisi sighed: could it have been her?
