Chapter 400: Our Daughter
"Do you want to touch her?"
He felt a little guilty disturbing the peacefully sleeping newborn, but with Leander’s support, Qiong Xing reached out and touched his daughter for the first time.
"...I’m so glad you’re safe."
"She’s a lot healthier than Mama is right now. Right?"
She was larger than the twins had been, though still smaller than Lian had been at birth.
When Qiong Xing touched her tiny hand, her fingers immediately curled around his.
That simple gesture filled him with more joy than anything else.
"Fufu. What reliable little bodyguards."
Qiong Xing smiled when he noticed the twins sleeping on either side of the baby as though protecting her.
"They said they were guarding her while Mama rested."
He still lacked the strength to lift the twins himself, but he gently stroked their heads.
"Thank you."
Then he looked back at Leander.
"How long was I asleep?"
"Two days."
Leander’s expression darkened slightly.
"I knew you were breathing, so I knew you were alive. But... I was terrified the entire time."
"I’m sorry for making you worried."
Qiong Xing reached out and gently touched Leander’s cheek.
Leander immediately caught his hand and pressed a kiss into his palm.
"Don’t apologize."
"But I did make you worry."
"You did. A lot."
Even now, Leander’s voice carried traces of lingering fear.
Qiong Xing could not blame him.
If their positions had been reversed, he would have felt exactly the same.
"I’m sorry. And thank you for staying with me."
"There was no way I was leaving."
Leander lowered his head and pressed his forehead against Qiong Xing’s.
For a while, neither of them spoke.
They simply stayed there, enjoying the reassurance that the other was safe.
Eventually, the baby stirred.
A small sound escaped her lips as she wriggled in her sleep.
Immediately, the twins shifted closer as though instinctively protecting her.
That sight made Qiong Xing laugh softly.
"They really love her already."
"Of course they do. They’ve been waiting to meet her this whole time."
Leander carefully lifted the baby and placed her in Qiong Xing’s arms.
Despite the weakness still lingering in his body, Qiong Xing held her securely.
She was warm.
Small.
Fragile.
And unbelievably precious.
"...Hello."
The baby blinked her eyes sleepily, as though hearing his voice.
Tears threatened to spill from Qiong Xing’s eyes again.
"You worked hard too."
The tiny fingers curled around one of his.
At that moment, all the pain, fear, and uncertainty seemed insignificant.
His daughter was here.
Safe.
Alive.
That alone was enough.
"Have you thought of a name yet?" Leander asked quietly.
Qiong Xing looked down at the sleeping child nestled in his arms.
Then he smiled.
"No. Not yet."
There was no need to rush.
For now, he simply wanted to treasure this moment.
His daughter.
His family.
All of them were here.
And for the first time in days, Qiong Xing felt completely at peace.
Joa was quite the doting parent himself.
"Lian loves Papa too!"
"I... I see."
Unable to ask directly himself, Elias received an enthusiastic hug from kind-hearted Lian, who cheerfully declared that he loved him.
What a wonderful daughter she was.
...Wait.
Wasn’t there supposed to be another son somewhere?
"Sorry. I think he fell asleep during his nap..."
Iseul apologized sheepishly.
In his arms was Lingxiao who is sleeping soundly on his back with his belly completely exposed.
For a dragon, was that really acceptable?
"He looks like he’ll grow up to be quite the remarkable person."
"Or maybe just a huge idiot."
"....."
"....."
"....."
"....."
Despite the chorus of voices filling the room earlier, Lingxiao had somehow slept through all of it.
It was honestly impressive.
Everyone was admiring the feat when Joa immediately voiced what they were all thinking, leaving no one with a comeback.
...
"That guy, seriously!"
Leander had only taken his eyes off Qiong Xing for a few minutes while fetching him some water.
Who would have imagined that he could disappear in such a short amount of time?
Still, knowing Qiong Xing, he probably had not gone far.
Following his scent, Leander quickly located him and immediately felt relieved to find that he was safe.
"If you’re going to wander off, at least tell someone first."
"And who exactly was the person refusing to let me leave the room in the first place?"
Tch.
That hit a little too close to home.
"...Then try thinking about what it’s like for the person who comes back and finds an empty room."
Even knowing it was unfair, Leander could not stop himself from complaining.
The panic he had felt when he returned and found Qiong Xing gone had been overwhelming.
"I expected you’d say that, so I arranged for some very capable bodyguards."
Qiong Xing smiled and gestured downward.
Two little heads immediately peeked out from beside his legs.
"Rui’s protecting!"
"Yue too! Yue’s a big sister now!"
"I see. That’s reassuring."
Ever since the baby had been born, the twins had spent more and more time by her side.
Maybe it was because she was their little beastman sister.
Or maybe they simply hated being separated from their Mama.
"Besides, I only wanted to introduce her to Mayo. Nothing dangerous was going to happen."
Leander knew he worried too much.
Even so, he could not help it.
Qiong Xing was capable of handling himself in a fight.
But despite that, he still had a habit of getting himself involved in one thing or another.
And now he was carrying their newborn daughter in his arms.
There was no way not to worry.
Anyone would.
"I understand. I’ll come with you."
Leander was not heartless enough to drag them all the way here only to tell them to turn around and go home.
Qiong Xing smiled in relief.
After handing the baby over to Leander, he took the twins by the hand and headed over to see Snow.
"Mayo, this is your little sister, Qiong Hui. Please take care of her from now on."
"Mayo~"
