Song Tingshen kept his promise. In the following few days, he drove Ruan Xia to and from work.
Although the manager didn’t say it explicitly, she hinted that if Ruan Xia insisted on leaving, then the company could make an exception for her. However, she hoped that she could persist until the end of the week before leaving. The company would throw Ruan Xia a dinner party on Friday night to express that they were parting on good terms.

The company has arranged for dinner and singing after work. I can’t avoid going. Do you want to come?”

Song Tingshen glanced at her and answered, “If it’s a company dinner, it won’t be appropriate for me to go. After all, it’s a dinner organized by your company. I can probably go to the singing activity afterwards though. I’ll have to pick you up anyways.” He paused. “Promise me that you won’t drink anything alcoholic when I’m not there, not even fruit wine. If anyone asks, just say you’re allergic to alcohol.”
Ruan Xia: “Okay, I won’t drink.”
Song Tingshen stroked her head. It was the same gesture he did to Little Wang. “Very well-behaved.”
Ruan Xia shook his hand off. “If you can’t come, I’ll leave early, right after the dinner is over. Anyways, I’m already resigning. I’m not worried about falling out with them and not giving them face.”
“Okay.”
She unfastened her seatbelt. Just as she was about to get out of the car, Song Tingshen took something out from underneath the car and handed it to her. “Take this.”
Ruan Xia took the item. Before she had time to take a careful look, she heard Song Tingshen say, “Take this with you whenever you go out.”
“Pepper spray?” Ruan Xia was stunned by Song Tingshen’s wild imagination. “Why are you giving me this?”
Song Tingshen teased her, “Didn’t you say you’re a first-rate beauty? If you encounter someone with sinister intentions, this is an effective protective measure. I can’t be by your side at all times.”
As for why he brought her this, Song Tingshen wasn’t sure what exactly he was thinking.
It was just that he had overheard a female employee mentioning pepper spray on her call when he was getting off from work the other day.
