346 Ugly Baby

Yue Jiaojiao’s hair was all wet and stuck to her face.

She bit Zhao Zhan’s forearm and learned from the midwife to use more strength. She didn’t even dare to shout for fear of losing her strength, and the pain in her throat turned into a muffled groan.

Zhao Zhan was sweating profusely. It was as if he didn’t feel the pain in his arm at all, as he kept on wiping the sweat off Yue Jiaojiao.

Zhao Zhan murmured encouraging words in a low voice. His free hand held Yue Jiaojiao’s face and rubbed it gently, consoling her.

Beads of blood seeped out of his forearm.

Zhao Zhan took advantage of Yue Jiaojiao’s gasping for breath to hastily wipe off the drop of blood before moving to another spot and bringing it to her mouth. “Don’t bite the blood, it’s dirty.”

Yue Jiaojiao’s mind was only filled with the word use more force, and she didn’t notice Zhao Zhan’s actions.

“Soon, soon!” The midwife shouted loudly, “I see the child’s head! Use more force!”

“Ah-!”

Yue Jiaojiao’s face turned red as she let out a loud cry. Her neck was lifted up, and she fell back weakly.

Zhao Zhan quickly put his hand under her neck to prevent her from falling too hard.

“Yes!” The midwife carried the child to the little blanket that had been prepared in advance and praised Yue Jiaojiao. “You’ve had a hard time today. It’s a boy, and he looks very similar to you. He’s very good-looking.”

“Would you like to see your child?”

Zhao Zhan turned a deaf ear and knelt by the bed, moving closer to Yue Jiaojiao’s ear. “Jiaojiao, you’ve worked hard. How are you feeling? I’ll go get some hot water for you to wash up, then I’ll carry you back to your room to rest for a while, and then I’ll prepare some food.”

Yue Jiaojiao’s lips turned white. She opened her mouth and realized that her throat was in great pain.

Zhao Zhan hurriedly went to the side to pour a glass of hot water, gently held her neck, and half-held her in his arms. “Have a sip. The midwife said that you need to get off the ground and move. You’ll need more water when you go to the toilet later.”

Yue Jiaojiao took a moment to react.

If she wanted to go to the toilet, it should just be gas, right?

This midwife was indeed the most famous in Huai County. She could actually sum up this experience.

The midwife patted the baby’s feet hard.

“Waa-!”

The child’s cry rang out.

Madam Qin, who had been standing guard outside the door, asked, “My lady, are you alright? How is the baby?”

The midwife carried the child alone and went to open the door. I’ve finally seen it today. No one in your family is the first to care about a child.

Madam Qin first took a look at Yue Jiaojiao’s condition. When she saw that Zhao Zhan was eagerly waiting for her, she then looked at the baby in the midwife’s arms.

“Is it a girl?” Madam Qin’s face was full of joy, and she couldn’t move her eyes away from the baby. “The baby looks like you, my lady. She must be a girl.”

The midwife handed the child to Madam Qin with a smile. “Actually, she’s a he. You heard the crying just now. It was loud and clear.”

“Hold the child well. I need to check up on the mother.”

When Madam Qin heard this, she carefully carried the child. “How is she doing?”

The midwife had seen people who were considerate to the pregnant woman, but this was the first time she had seen a family who was so considerate to the pregnant woman that they didn’t even care about the child.

“You’re lucky to have a good husband who dotes on you so much.” The midwife lifted the blanket and checked again. “There’s no bleeding. You’re halfway through this.”

“We’re the lucky ones.” Zhao Zhan pushed Yue Jiaojiao’s messy hair to the side, then got up and looked at the midwife. “Can she wash up and go back to the bedroom now?”

The midwife nodded repeatedly. “Make sure she doesn’t come into contact with cold water. Also make sure there’s no wind blowing at her, or she will have a headache and other illnesses in the future.”

Zhao Zhan carefully noted down the midwife’s advice. “Please stay here for a few more days. If we don’t know anything in the future, we can ask you.”

“Don’t worry. I’ve received so much silver from you, so I’ll definitely stay for a few more days before leaving.”

This family was caring, generous, and considerate. She had been here for the past two days and had the best sleep she ever had.

Zhao Zhan got up and went to the kitchen to get some water. When he passed by Madam Qin, he glanced at the child in a hurry and then went out like a gust of wind.

The doors and windows of the room were tightly shut, and there was still a bloody smell that had not gone away.

Yue Jiaojiao’s brows were tightly furrowed. She was so exhausted that she wanted to just fall asleep.

“Here’s the water.” Zhao Zhan brought the water into the room. Without a care for any dirt or grime, he immediately lifted the blanket and wriggled in. He used a warm handkerchief to clean Yue Jiaojiao’s body. After doing this, he changed the mattress and cleaned it again.

“I’ll carry you back to your room.”

“Madam Qin,” Yue Jiaojiao’s voice was weak. “Please carry the child back to the bedroom. I want to see him…”

Zhao Zhan stopped in his tracks and took a closer look at the child in Madam Qin’s arms.

“Jiaojiao, he doesn’t look like you. He’s not good-looking at all.”

“Waa-!”

The child’s eyes were closed, and he was crying loudly.

Zhao Zhan’s brows were tightly locked together as he quickly left with Yue Jiaojiao in his arms and returned to the bedroom.

Madam Qin didn’t know how to react. “I’ve never seen a child as good-looking as your family’s child in my life. Take a look at him again in a few days. He’ll definitely look much better.”

“This face looks so much like Jiaojiao, how can he be ugly?”

The bedroom was redecorated with many things. Next to the bed was a small bed made of wood by Zhao Zhan.

“You can’t eat yet. You need to recuperate.” Zhao Zhan placed her on the bed and pulled the blanket over to cover her tightly. “When you’re better, I’ll help you get off the bed and walk so that you can eat more comfortably. You need to eat more meat and drink less soup.” Zhao Zhan was lying on the edge of the bed, his eyes were soft. “I’ve asked a lot of people that it’s better to eat meat than to drink soup when breastfeeding.”

“Didn’t you say that some children can’t drink milk? If you don’t want to feed him, then we won’t. I’ve been looking around for a long time and finally found a cow. It has been raised in Huai County and fed with fine grain every day. It’s very healthy, and it’ll be fine to give it to that kid.”

“You don’t have to worry about the child. Just focus on resting right now. With Madam Qin and I around, he won’t go hungry.”

Yue Jiaojiao raised her head to look at him and couldn’t help but laugh. “Zhao Zhan, you don’t seem to like our son.”

...

She glanced sideways at the child lying beside her and said gently, “I’ve decided on so many names for my daughters, but now I don’t need any of them. You have to come up with a good name when I wake up.”

“I do.” Zhao Zhan turned his head and pointed at the small bed. “I’m just more worried about you right now. It’s good that we have a boy. In the future, he can protect you with me. You’ll be safer this way.”

Yue Jiaojiao blinked her eyes, feeling sleepy.

Zhao Zhan immediately shut up and lay down beside her, accompanying her quietly.
