Chapter 185: Met with Grandfather 1

Translated by AmaLynne

“Have you met Viscount Kofi recently?”

A few days after returning from the palace, Sam was summoned by Jonathan to his office and asked this question.

Sitting on a sofa, sipping tea, Sam tilted his head.

The name didn’t ring a bell.

“Who’s that?”

“We’re not particularly close, but we know each other. He’s from the same royal faction of nobles, but we don’t have much interaction.”

“What happened with the viscount?”

“It seems that he approached Sam recently and there was some misunderstanding, so he wants to apologize and have a proper conversation.”

The elderly man who had approached Sam earlier came to mind.

“Oh, is that the person you mean?”

“You did meet him, then?”

“Yes, probably. He called me Samuel Reinbach, so I thought he had mistaken me for someone else.”

“…Sam, was it intentional?”

Jonathan sighed.

“I don’t blame you for not wanting to associate with anyone who calls you Reinbach. So, what do you want to do? Meeting or not meeting him is up to you; it’s your choice. We don’t owe them any favors, and if they’re trying to get on the good side of the Court Wizard Sam, it might be a waste of time to entertain all of them.”

However, Jonathan added a caveat.

“At the moment, it seems he just wants to talk rather than trying to win you over. If he knows that Sam is connected to the Reinbachs, it might not hurt to meet him once to see what he wants.”

“I see. I don’t feel comfortable meeting someone related to the Reinbachs, but I don’t want any trouble later on, so I’ll go meet him.”

“Understood. I’ll convey that to the other party.”

“Please do.”

The next day, as arranged by Jonathan, there was an immediate response from Viscount Kofi expressing his desire to meet, so they decided to meet at the Count’s residence on the same day.

And the other party arrived promptly.

“I am deeply grateful that you took the time to meet with me today despite your busy schedule. I am Ewing Kofi, the former head of the Viscount Kofi family.”

“Thank you. I am Samuel Scheidt.”

“My fiancée, Mizuki Amemiya.”

In the reception room of the Count Walker residence, Ewing Kofi, the former head of the Kofi Viscount family, and Sam met.

It turned out that Ewing was the elderly man who had approached Sam outside the palace.

He had only brought one attendant and was unarmed.

It seemed like he genuinely wanted to talk to Sam.

On Sam’s side, Mizuki was positioned nearby, considering any unforeseen circumstances.

This included protecting Sam from Ewing but also anticipating the opposite scenario. Thus, Mizuki, the most skilled among Sam’s fiancées, was chosen for this role.

Having the fiancées present in this situation also served as a deterrent to prevent any discussions about marriage proposals from arising inadvertently.

Jonathan had already exchanged greetings with the Kofi family, but he remained with Sam to provide support and alleviate his concerns.

“Samuel Shite-sama, I apologize for my rudeness the other day.”

After exchanging greetings, Ewing bowed deeply and apologized.

“Please, raise your head. I’m the one who should apologize for my inappropriate behavior. However, why did you mistake me for someone like Samuel Reinbach?”

“Well, you see… I am Carius Reinbach’s father.”

“I see…”

(So he’s not just a relative, but his actual father? That’s surprising. I never expected that man’s father to be in the capital.)

Sam sighed inwardly. If he had known Ewing’s true identity beforehand, he probably wouldn’t have agreed to this meeting.

“Um, so does that mean, Ewing-sama, that you are Sam’s grandfather?”

“No, Mizuki-sama, I doubt that.”

“Huh? But…”

While Mizuki mentioned that Ewing was Sam’s grandfather, Jonathan interrupted.

“Baron Reinbach publicly stated that his eldest son had passed away. In that case, aren’t Sam and he unrelated? He is Samuel Scheidt, not the deceased Samuel Reinbach.”

“I came prepared to hear such words.”

Ewing spoke calmly when he looked at Sam.

“I understand why you would be cautious, but I’ve severed ties with Carius.”

“What do you mean?”

“He used to be my heir, but he became arrogant, thinking he was better than everyone, and would throw tantrums if things didn’t go his way. I tried to change him, but he remained the same. So I made my younger son the heir and expelled Carius. I thought he might change with some effort, but it seems nothing has changed, considering your circumstances.”

“I have no interest in Carius Reinbach.”

Sam couldn’t care less about how Carius was expelled from the Kofi family or the details of what happened.

“Sam, you shouldn’t be so cold to your grandfather.”

Mizuki reprimanded Sam for his indifferent attitude towards Ewing.

Sam raised an eyebrow in a perplexed manner.

“It’s alright, Mizuki Amemiya-dono. To him, he might not be associated with the Reinbachs anymore, and I understand that.”

“Why did you come to see me then?”

“My grandson has achieved great success as a wizard at such a young age. I wanted to see him and express my apologies.”

“Apologies?”

“I don’t know the details of what Carius did as Samuel, and as a father, I can only apologize for the actions of my wayward son. However, if he hasn’t changed, I advise you to be cautious. He’s bound to cause trouble.”

“Thank you for your advice.”

Sam remained unenthusiastic.

Even if Ewing apologized now, it wouldn’t change the past.

Sam was no longer Samuel Reinbach, and Carius’s declaration was not entirely incorrect.

Sam had indeed taken on the identity of Samuel Scheidt.

Family, to Sam, now consisted of those at the Count Walker—Daphne, Derek, and others, along with Mizuki, Hanae, Stella, and the rest of his fiancées. That was all that mattered.

In the end, Ewing left without engaging in further conversation.

He expressed his desire to meet again, a sentiment that Sam didn’t refuse.

“Your grandfather must have been genuinely concerned for you.”

“Do you think so?”

“Yeah, I do. You don’t have to be so distant.”

Once Ewing left and Sam remained in the reception room, his fiancées tried to comfort him.

“I’m sorry, but I’m Samuel Scheidt.”

“Even so, you’ve been in contact with Daphne and the others.”

“Well, that’s true.”

“I’m not saying you should hold onto those painful memories, but your grandfather came to see you. If you have another chance, try to be a bit more gentle with him.”

“Alright, I’ll give it a try.”

“Good. It’s good to be honest. You’re such a good kid, Sam.”

Sam’s fiancées comforted him, and Mizuki patted his head gently.

“Hey, don’t treat me like a child.”

“Haha, but you are a child. Sam, you’re my adorable younger fiancé.”

Saying that, Mizuki embraced Sam affectionately, and Sam responded by hugging Mizuki back tightly.
