Xander wasn't even expecting a proper response when he asked Selena that, but unexpectedly, the girl answered him with an answer that made him feel very strange.
"Because that's the only time I can hug you without getting rejected," Selena replied with a smile.
Not a fake smile filled with deception, but a real smile that could make you feel so much better when you saw it. A smile that reached the girl's eyes, and made those blue orbs a lot brighter than usual.
Those blue eyes looked straight into his eyes and made Xander feel that she was looking straight into his soul. While the girl gave him warmth and not a scary flame that he had known so far.
"Taxi!" Selena said, interrupting what Xander was thinking at the moment.
Xander turned around and saw a taxi approaching before stopping right beside him. He then opened the car door for Selena and let the girl in, before he got in too.
And after Selena gave the address to the taxi driver, she looked at Xander with her round eyes.
"What?" Xander was surprised that Selena was looking at him that way.
"Are you coming home with me?" she asked in a voice that sounded incredulous.
"I'll just take you home," Xander corrected Selena, but the girl was still looking at him in confusion. "What is it?"
"Actually you don't need to go back and forth by taking me home, I can go home by myself." Selena was not a child who didn't know her way home and this wasn't the first time she was going home late at night in a taxi and also, she was a shifter. Why did Selena feel that Xander always forgot that part?
Xander then looked at Selena for a while before he said quietly. "I'll take you home."
It was a statement uttered without leaving room for negotiation, which meant that no matter what Selena said he would walk her to her apartment and watch her close the door before Xander would leave.
On the other hand, seeing Xander's determination to send her home, made Selena smile to herself. She was happy.
Granted, it would be troublesome for Xander to travel with her back and forth like this, but Selena was much happier when her mate went to the trouble of sending her home and ensuring her safety like this.
Then, Selena put her shoulder to Xander's shoulder and said, "Just say it if you want to always be close to me, there's no need to be embarrassed like that."
Xander glanced at Selena who was smiling broadly at him and took a deep breath before he turned his gaze out the window, staring at the dark night and the deserted street.
However, Xander didn't push Selena away as she rested her head on his shoulder.
"I can burn you," Xander said softly. He warned her.
"Just do it," Selena replied in the same tone, and then closed her eyes.
The only reason why Xander didn't push Selena away was because he was feeling calm. He felt he had self-control and couldn't possibly lose control when this girl casually touched him without any fear, even though he knew what he might be able to do.
For some reason, it made Xander feel much more relaxed.

Selena woke up when she felt someone tap her cheek pretty hard.
"It's hurting!" Selena grumbled, then rubbed her sleepy face and eyes. "Stop hitting me."
"I've been trying to wake you up for the last fifteen minutes, but you just won't wake up," Xander grumbled.
He didn't expect that this girl could sleep that deep, not even caring about her surroundings. Didn't she realize that she was with a stranger she had just met? Even though he was her mate, that didn't mean Selena could be so resigned and fall asleep without being cautious, right?
Xander could do something immoral to her if she wasn't careful, after all he was a man.
"You can do it more gently," Selena said. "Like giving a kiss. I prefer to be woken up that way."
And again, Xander couldn't understand how this girl would give such an answer.
"Hurry up and get down," Xander said, then opened the door and pushed Selena out of the taxi.
Selena didn't move, she instead grabbed Xander's hand to get down with her and closed the taxi door.
"You're staying at my house, okay?" Selena said firmly and this took Xander, again, by surprise.
"You are inviting a man to stay at your house? Are you doing this with all the men you meet?" Xander narrowed his eyes, disliking the thought.
"I'm just asking my mate to stay," Selena replied irritably. "And it's a shame I can only have one mate and that's you, so you're the only one I'm staying with."
Xander had the option to leave there and go find another taxi to go back to the house earlier and take his motorbike so he could go home and rest.
However, it was a long journey and Xander felt tired just imagining it.
Not to mention that Selena didn't give him any other choice by pulling his hand along, as if that way, she could prevent Xander from escaping.
Well, Xander could have run away, but he preferred to give the girl some control over himself and followed her to her room.
They took the elevator up to the eleventh floor and Xander waited leaning against the wall as he waited for Selena to open her bedroom door.
"If it wasn't for this mate bond, what made you not afraid of me?" Xander asked suddenly just as Selena managed to find her room key and opened the door.
However, she paused for a moment and left her room door open.
"You know that I can hurt you at any time and I still can't control this power," Xander said as he looked deep into those blue eyes. "I'm not normal."
Selena rolled her eyes when she heard that last phrase. "I'm not normal either. I'm a shifter and I think apart from this mate bond, I really like you. You're like a mystery and I was created with a composition of twenty percent shifter and eighty percent curiosity. So why not?" Selena shrugged nonchalantly. "Oh, and one more thing… you have beautiful eyes."
Xander felt his throat constrict.
"Has anyone ever told you that you're handsome?"
"I know it."
