li shaobin was embarrassed. how did she guess it so easily? “no, i wanted to give them to you.”
“if that’s the case, you definitely wouldn’t give me purple roses,” ruan yang said.
“no, hu zhi only told me to bring a bouquet of flowers along but i really did choose the flowers.” in his hurry to explain himself, li shaobin accidentally had a slip of the tongue.
“i knew it.” ruan yang raised her brows.
li shaobin pressed his lips together and said insistently, “in any case, i chose the purple roses. do you like them?”
“they look pretty.” ruan yang put the flowers in the lobby and got him a pair of slippers.

li shaobin took a couple more glances and quickly shifted his gaze away. “were you at home the entire day? you didn’t go out?”
“mm.” she picked up the book on her knee and continued reading.
“weren’t you bored?”
“i was alright; i was reading the entire day. i almost forgot the time.” ruan yang put her concentration into her book.
li shaobin watched as she read. he pulled the book away from her unhappily. “ruan yang, can you keep me company? i came over specifically to spend time with you, but you keep looking at your book.”
“i was just at the exciting part,” ruan yang said a little gloomily. “do you want to watch the tv?”
“no. i want to look at you.” li shaobin reached out to cuddle her without thinking. it was only when he reached over that the two of them froze in the realization that it was the first time he had cuddled her.
his arm stiffened and so did ruan yang. after around two and a half minutes of silence in the house, li shaobin said softly and shyly, “er... you can continue reading your book. i’ll just... cuddle you.”
“mm...” ruan yang reached for the book again and flipped over to the page she stopped at but she was unable to concentrate on the book like before. after all, she was being cuddled by a man. besides, she could also sense his intense gaze.
“can you not look at me?” ruan yang looked up.
“oh. but... i’m here to look at you,” li shaobin said obstinately.
ruan yang said, “you can watch the tv for a bit then look at me for a while, so you won’t be so sick of looking at me.”

“i want to try it too.” he went over.
ruan yang scooped up a spoonful for him and even blew on the soup before putting it to his mouth. li shaobin looked at the part where she drank from and took a sip from there. it tasted good. he seemed to taste the fragrance from her mouth.
“how’s it?” she asked.
“super good,” li shaobin said with a grin.
ruan yang didn’t seem to really believe him. she turned the gas stove off and started cutting the vegetables. looking at her adept motions, li shaobin commented, “you’re really quite good at cooking.”
“not quite good. i just know a little,” ruan yang said. “i knew how to cook when i was in school. my parents had to go to work then, so i would always have to cook for myself after school.”
“huh? that’s such hard work.” li shaobin began to sympathize with her. “i would always play basketball with my friends after school. i didn’t even go into the kitchen. i wouldn’t even study when my mom told me to.”
ruan yang smiled lightly. a young master like him wouldn’t need to step into the kitchen. “go wait for me outside; i have to cook. you’ll distract me.”
“alright.” li shaobin walked out obediently.
while waiting, song chuyi gave him a call. “want to play ball tonight?”
“no.” li shaobin propped his legs up lazily. “why? your wife isn’t keeping you company tonight so you thought of me?”

“you can add more seasoning or more chili,” li shaobin said with frustration. “this broccoli is... too bland.” it was so bland that his teeth were about to fall out.
