Alex's group was less than 50 yards apart and they all started preparing their moves.
Gardevoir doesn't prepare any move and her only task is to interrupt [Teleport] from the Alakazam.

Alex knew that it is extremely difficult to directly stop a Pokemon from using [Teleport] and that it is already extremely fast for a Psychic-type
Pokemon to do it in only 10 seconds.
(If Alakazam had the same level as Gardevoir, Gardevoir would take longer than 5 minutes.)
Alex only had to prevent all of Janine's Pokemon and Janine from touching Alakazam at the same time for 10 seconds so that he can take away this escape possibility.
Janine, to Alex's surprise, doesn't try to run away right away and lets each of her Pokemon use the moves they've prepared.
Once all the Pokemon are within range, they start using any of the long-distance combat moves that they have prepared ahead of time.
40 Pokemon use moves almost simultaneously and this pleasant landscape became a chaotic battlefield.
