Chapter 38: Hospital

Shen Tian carried Cao Huo Er away from the rundown district until they finally reached where his car was parked.

Once there, he gently placed her down beside it.

The moment Cao Huo Er saw the luxury car in front of her, she visibly became nervous.

It looked so expensive that she felt scared to even touch it.

Shen Tian noticed immediately and opened the passenger side door for her.

"Don’t worry about it," he said casually.

Under obvious anxiety, Cao Huo Er slowly nodded before carefully getting into the passenger seat without another word.

Shen Tian closed the door for her before walking around to the driver’s side.

A moment later, the engine started.

As the car slowly pulled away from the area, Shen Tian glanced toward her.

"Are you alright with going to a hospital?"

Cao Huo Er hesitated slightly before quietly speaking.

"...I don’t have any money."

Her weak orange eyes lowered toward her lap.

"I begged before... but they turned me away."

She looked down at her worn out dress.

There were stains on the fabric.

Small tears in several places.

And most painfully of all...

She wasn’t even wearing shoes.

Shen Tian silently drove out of the parking lot before smiling slightly.

"Well, don’t worry about that."

He leaned back comfortably while holding the steering wheel with one hand.

"Not to brag, but I’m rich as hell. I basically have infinite money."

Cao Huo Er slowly looked at him.

"You don’t have to do that for me..."

Shen Tian shook his head immediately.

"Nope."

Then his expression softened slightly.

"I know your son. It’s only right that I treat his mother well."

The moment Ye Chen was mentioned again, Cao Huo Er’s expression became anxious.

"...Is he alright?" she asked quietly.

Shen Tian frowned slightly.

"He went down the wrong path."

Cao Huo Er lightly clenched her trembling hands together.

"...Is he still alive?" she asked in a choked voice.

The car slowly stopped at a red light.

Shen Tian looked toward her before gently holding her trembling hands reassuringly.

"Yes. He’s alive. He just needs guidance from you. That’s why I came here."

Hearing those words, Cao Huo Er’s tense body slowly relaxed.

"...I understand," she whispered softly. "I’ll do anything to help guide my son to the right path..."

. . .

Hospital.

The moment Shen Tian entered the hospital with Cao Huo Er, the entire atmosphere changed.

Doctors hurried over.

Nurses immediately cleared pathways.

Even the front desk staff stood up nervously the second they recognized him.

Cao Huo Er quietly watched all of this happen.

At first, she thought Shen Tian was simply rich.

But now she realized something else.

He was powerful.

The kind of person even hospitals treated carefully.

Before long, Cao Huo Er was checked into a luxurious private room that honestly looked more like a five-star hotel suite than a hospital room.

The soft bed.

The giant television.

The beautiful view overlooking the city skyline.

Everything intimidated her.

Meanwhile, while Cao Huo Er was undergoing examinations, Shen Tian sat in the waiting area outside.

Several sick children nearby had somehow convinced him to play board games with them.

Of course, Shen Tian was absolutely destroying them.

Kidding.

He was intentionally losing on purpose.

The children burst into laughter every time they won, while Shen Tian acted shocked dramatically.

"No way! I lost again!? You cheated!"

One little girl puffed her cheeks proudly.

"I’m just better than you!"

Shen Tian pointed at her in disbelief.

"...This kid’s a monster."

The children laughed even harder.

A few minutes later, one of the doctors approached Shen Tian nervously.

"Young Master Shen..."

Shen Tian looked over calmly.

The doctor adjusted his glasses before speaking carefully.

"It seems the woman you brought in is suffering from a severe internal illness."

His expression became serious.

"If you hadn’t brought her here today... she likely would have died within the next few months."

Shen Tian’s eyes narrowed slightly.

But he simply waved his hand dismissively.

"That doesn’t matter anymore."

Then he looked directly at the doctor.

"Can you help her?"

"Of course!" the doctor answered immediately.

"She just needs to remain hospitalized for several days. After that, she’ll be stable enough to continue treatment safely from home!"

Shen Tian nodded.

"Good."

He stood up from his seat.

"I’ll go see her."

Shen Tian walked past the doctor before eventually arriving at Cao Huo Er’s room.

Inside, Cao Huo Er quietly stood near the large window while looking out at the beautiful city below.

Bright lights.

Tall buildings.

It was a complete contrast to the broken neighborhood she lived in.

"Beautiful, isn’t it?" Shen Tian asked as he walked beside her.

Cao Huo Er gave a weak nod.

"...It really is."

"I know you want to know more about your son," Shen Tian said softly. "But right now, your priority should be getting better."

"I know," Cao Huo Er replied quietly.

She looked at her reflection.

"I don’t want my son seeing me like this anyway..."

A faint, bittersweet smile appeared on Cao Huo Er’s face.

"I’ve already been apart from him for years... So a little more time won’t hurt."

Shen Tian clapped his hands together lightly.

"Great. Now why don’t you get back into bed?"

Before Cao Huo Er could respond, Shen Tian gently picked her up once again and carefully placed her onto the soft bed.

Cao Huo Er smiled faintly at him.

"...Thank you."

Her weak voice carried genuine gratitude.

A moment later, she slowly closed her eyes, finally allowing herself to rest peacefully for the first time in a long while.

Shen Tian quietly stood up.

After turning off the lights, he calmly walked toward the door before softly closing it behind him.

Outside in the hallway, the doctor from earlier immediately straightened his posture nervously upon seeing him.

As Shen Tian walked past him, he suddenly stopped.

"Don’t let anything happen to that woman."

His voice was ice cold.

"Do you understand me?"

The doctor visibly gulped.

"Of course, Young Master Shen!"

Shen Tian gave a small nod before continuing down the hallway without another word.

Eventually, he reached the hospital entrance.

The same group of sick children from earlier immediately noticed him.

"Mister Shen!"

"Bye bye!"

"Come play again sometime!"

The children happily waved at him.

Shen Tian looked at them for a moment before giving a small wave back.

’Note to self... Donate more money to these hospitals.’
