Chapter 22: Chapter 22 - Chosen One
I hadn’t wanted to argue with the Lucas family, but their words had pushed me too far. Even a man of patience has his limits, and I was no exception.
Holmes Lucas and Maeve Lucas stood stunned for half a second before erupting into laughter.
"Did you hear what he said? He said the Sean family picked him, it’s killing me!" Maeve laughed so hard tears formed in her eyes.
Holmes clearly felt the same way and couldn’t resist mocking me. "If the Sean family were picking a maid, maybe they’d pick you. But they’re looking for talent, not trash!"
"You should beg Harvey Brown, maybe he can find you a job as a maid, at least you won’t starve, right?"
My face grew colder as I decided to stop arguing and simply sat down on the sofa.
"Did I tell you to sit down, get up!" Maeve shouted shrilly.
I sneered at her. "All these years, when you made me stand, I never sat. When you told me to go east, I never went west."
"Did any of you remember all the good I did? All you thought was that I was a spineless loser," I said coldly.
In that moment, I realized that this world wouldn’t show any mercy to honest people. The more honest someone is, the more they get bullied.
"Are you turning against us now?" Holmes stood up angrily, looking like he was about to take action.
"Enough! Shut up!" Harvey Brown yelled impatiently.
Holmes appeared taken aback. He looked at Harvey, clearly sensing something was off about him today.
Despite his confusion, Holmes still sat back down obediently.
Harvey took a deep breath and said with an awkward smile, "Mason, I was wrong before. Don’t hold grudges against me. We still need to be on good terms in the future..."
At this, Holmes and Maeve looked even more puzzled.
Why did the usually hot-tempered Harvey suddenly seem like a whole different person today?
"You took my wife, occupied the house I lived in for three years, and humiliated me. Now you want me to just let it go?" I stared coldly at Harvey.
"Sorry, but I’m not that generous," I said coldly.
Maeve snapped, "Mason, are you being ungrateful now?"
Harvey looked very unhappy, but he didn’t dare lose his temper.
"Mason, if you want, I’ll leave right now! I’ll return the house to you!" Harvey vowed.
I sneered at his offer. "Give me back my house? Do you think this place is still my home? Every second I spend here disgusts me."
Harvey’s face changed, a touch of anger rising within him.
"Harvey, I made myself clear at the banquet," I took a deep breath.
"I don’t want anything to do with people like you, but I’ll remember what you’ve done to me." With that, I stood up from the sofa.
I couldn’t bear to stay in this house for another minute.
"Mason!" Right as I was about to step out of the house, Harvey suddenly shouted.
I stopped but didn’t turn around, my voice cold. "What else do you want?"
Harvey clenched his teeth and asked, "What do you want in the end?"
"You figure it out," I said coldly.
With that, I left the Lucas’s house without looking back.
Harvey had a pale face, furious, but the subtle fear in his heart made him feel on the verge of collapse.
"Harvey, what’s wrong with you?" Holmes asked, frowning.
"Yeah, why did you go beg that loser?" Maeve mumbled.
Harvey hung his head, remaining silent.
Maeve turned to Lyla Lucas, "Lyla, what’s going on here? What happened?"
Lyla opened her mouth, unsure how to explain.
At that moment, Harvey raised his head.
He said wearily, "Do you know who the Sean family picked this time?"
Holmes laughed, "Isn’t it obvious? It has to be you! Otherwise, how could our Lucas family have been invited!"
"Yeah, it’s not Mason, is it? Hahaha!" Maeve laughed out loud.
However, Harvey looked at Maeve intently and said, word by word, "The person the Sean family picked is Mason Raymond!"
