Chapter 21: Chapter 21 - Truth Revealed
I stared at my former father-in-law and mother-in-law, feeling disgust rise within me. The relationship we’d built over three years had crumbled so easily, leaving me bewildered.
"I came to see Grandpa," I stated after taking a deep breath.
"My dad doesn’t need your visit. Just get out!" Holmes sneered.
With everyone causing a commotion around me, I felt a whirlwind of emotions. In the past, I would have retreated timidly, but now I refused to continue living that miserable existence.
"What are you still staring at? Get out!" Holmes jabbed his finger toward my face and shouted.
Just as I prepared to respond, Harvey Brown’s vehicle pulled up nearby.
Upon spotting Harvey, Maeve and Holmes rushed to greet him.
"Oh, my dear son-in-law, did today’s banquet go well?" Maeve asked with obvious flattery in her voice.
"I heard the Sean family wants to back a young man in River City. It must be my brilliant son-in-law!" Holmes added with a laugh.
Harvey’s expression darkened considerably, and he remained silent.
"Son-in-law, why aren’t you saying anything?" Maeve questioned, puzzled.
"It’s definitely because he’s overjoyed! Let’s have a drink to celebrate!" Holmes exclaimed enthusiastically while grabbing Harvey’s arm.
"Fuck off!" Harvey violently shook off Holmes’s hand.
Holmes appeared startled and awkwardly stammered, "What... what’s wrong?"
Harvey said nothing, only staring intently at me from a distance, complicated emotions evident on his face.
Just days earlier, I had been nothing but trash he could toy with, but suddenly I’d become the Sean family’s honored guest. This clearly infuriated Harvey, yet considering the Sean family’s influence, he didn’t dare show any disrespect.
"I understand!" Maeve suddenly clapped her hands and spoke with an enlightened expression. "It must be because of Mason that you’re upset, right? Don’t worry, I’ll chase him away immediately!"
After saying this, Maeve marched toward me, pointing at my face while yelling, "My son-in-law has returned, so why haven’t you disappeared yet?"
"Let me warn you, you’d better not upset my son-in-law or I won’t let you off easy!" Holmes threatened, waving his fist as he spoke.
My patience was wearing thin, but unlike the Johnsons, I wasn’t an animal. After spending years with these people, I couldn’t bring myself to be completely ruthless.
With considerable restraint, I repeated, "I’ve told you, I came to see Grandpa."
"Who the hell do you think you are? You think you have the right?" Holmes cursed loudly.
"Let him in," Harvey suddenly called from where he stood.
Hearing this, Holmes and Maeve froze simultaneously.
They scratched their ears, convinced they had misheard.
"Son-in-law, why allow him inside? Don’t worry, I’ll just—"
"I said, let him in!" Harvey interrupted Maeve with a furious roar.
Maeve immediately appeared embarrassed, standing there awkwardly.
"My son-in-law is simply too kind-hearted! Fine, since I’m feeling generous today, I’ll let him in. Haha," Holmes said with forced enthusiasm.
"Kid, you should be extremely grateful to Harvey, understand?" Maeve growled.
Without responding, I walked into the Lucas family home.
Behind me, Harvey’s face had turned pale.
His simple thought was to apologize to me, hoping there might still be some hope!
"To actually apologize to such a coward..." The more Harvey contemplated this, the more humiliated he felt, but he had no other options now.
I arrived at the Lucas’s house and gave the Soul Nourishment Pill to Calvin Lucas.
"Grandpa, this might be the last time I visit you," I said quietly.
Calvin Lucas’s wrinkled face displayed profound bitterness, but eventually he seemed to accept reality.
"Mason, I’m sorry," Calvin sighed deeply.
"To secure the Lucas family’s prosperity, I brought you in as a son-in-law. My selfishness caused you to endure such humiliation..." Calvin’s eyes welled with tears.
I remained quiet, already aware of everything he was saying.
"I cast a fortune for myself, and my life approaches its end. I fear I won’t survive much longer," Calvin continued.
"Can you... can you forgive me? Forgive Lyla?" Calvin gripped my hand, his voice pleading.
I stayed silent for a long time before finally shaking my head. "The seeds we sow will bear fruit. Once you’ve done something, you must face the consequences."
"I will never forgive Lyla." After speaking these words, I turned and walked out of Calvin’s room.
In the living room, the Johnsons clustered around Harvey, still viewing him as their support.
"Finished seeing him? Get the hell out now!" Maeve demanded impatiently.
"Looking at you, this useless waste, makes my blood boil! You’ve wasted three years of our time!" Holmes snorted.
"Just look at Harvey, he’s the one the Sean family chose! And look at you, a good-for-nothing who only knows how to cook and wash clothes."
I hadn’t planned to argue with them initially, but after hearing this, my patience evaporated.
I fixed a cold stare on the Lucas family members and said deliberately, "A useless waste? Let me tell you, the Taylors have chosen me, not Harvey!"
