Chapter 138: Chapter 138 - Distant Protection
Mabel Sean’s pretty face flushed crimson as she protested, "Grandpa, what are you talking about!"
"Hahaha."
"You’ve grown up before my eyes. How could I not know what’s going through your mind?" Jerry Sean chuckled while stroking his beard thoughtfully.
Mabel’s blush deepened, spreading down to her neck. She quickly covered her notebook and changed the subject. "Grandpa, did you need something?"
Jerry settled onto the bedroom sofa and said deliberately, "I came to tell you about Mason Raymond."
At the mention of this name, Mabel immediately stood up.
She hurriedly sat beside Jerry and asked anxiously, "Grandpa, how is Mason doing now?"
Rather than answering directly, Jerry built suspense. "What do you think?"
Mabel considered for a moment before responding, "When I left, Mason had just made enemies with the Colton family. Now... he must be figuring out how to deal with them."
"Mhm," Jerry nodded slightly, encouraging Mabel to continue.
Mabel thought deeply, "The Colton family has Bernard Colton and that guy Zachary Ortega. From what I know, Zachary isn’t simple. If I were Mason... I’d use the Sean family for protection, at least to ensure my safety, while slowly building my strength."
Jerry seemed to have anticipated her response. He shook his head. "Unfortunately, I’ve made it clear that the Sean family will never interfere with Mason’s affairs, and furthermore, we won’t concern ourselves with his survival."
Mabel’s expression immediately darkened.
She jumped to her feet, exclaiming angrily, "Grandpa, you’re putting Mason in danger by doing this!"
"Hahaha." Jerry couldn’t help laughing.
"If Mason constantly relies on the Sean family’s protection, how will he ever grow?" Jerry shook his head firmly.
Mabel couldn’t accept this reasoning, demanding urgently, "Just tell me, how exactly is Mason doing right now!"
"The Colton family lost, and quite thoroughly at that." Jerry replied with a slight smile.
Mabel looked stunned. "Grandpa, are you serious?"
"Of course." Jerry smiled calmly.
"Not only that, but recently Mason personally killed an overseas grandmaster."
This news shocked Mabel even more!
Before she left, Mason had only reached Fifth-rank Inner Strength. How could he have progressed so dramatically in such a short time?
"I said before, that man’s son could never be ordinary." Jerry remarked with quiet satisfaction.
Relief flooded Mabel’s face as she whispered, "I knew Mason wouldn’t disappoint me."
Even Jerry sighed, "True. My prediction was similar to yours, but Mason exceeded my expectations."
"Of course!" Mabel’s tone unconsciously carried a hint of pride.
Jerry smiled wryly. Initially, he’d worried Mabel wouldn’t value Mason highly enough, but apparently she had fallen deeper for him than expected.
"Don’t celebrate too soon. Although Chuzzle is small, several powerful families still maintain influence there," Jerry cautioned.
Mabel knew this well. Because of Mason, she had thoroughly researched Chuzzle.
In Chuzzle, the truly elite families resided in Shiglance City.
Among them, the Schroeder family commanded the most respect. Though reportedly low-key, their assets spanned the entire Chuzzle Province, with reported funds exceeding 10 billion yuan!
Moreover, the Schroeder family came from martial arts nobility, boasting nearly ten grandmasters. Rumors suggested the family head had even reached Grandmaster Peak level!
Such power might seem insignificant to the Sean family, but in Chuzzle, it was enough to dominate completely!
"Mason isn’t stupid. He wouldn’t provoke them deliberately," Mabel whispered.
Jerry disagreed, shaking his head. "Tall trees catch the wind. Some confrontations are unavoidable despite precautions."
Hearing this, Mabel bit her lower lip anxiously.
She understood perfectly that Mason’s current strength couldn’t match the Schroeders, Chuzzle’s preeminent family.
"Grandpa..." Mabel looked at Jerry with pleading eyes.
Jerry smiled helplessly.
For decades in Capital City, he’d been known for his toughness and ruthlessness.
Yet facing his granddaughter, he never maintained his stern demeanor.
Whenever Mabel used this tactic, Jerry couldn’t refuse her.
"Don’t worry, I’ll keep him alive," Jerry conceded with resignation.
"Really?" Mabel’s eyes brightened instantly.
Jerry rolled his eyes. "If he died, you’d blame me forever."
Mabel’s face reddened again as she murmured, "Grandpa, don’t talk nonsense..."
——
Victor drove at high speed, and we quickly returned to River City.
"Mr. Raymond, what’s happening in River City? Why are there military personnel everywhere?" Victor looked through the car window with a frown.
I also found it strange. The entire city appeared to be under martial law, with armed soldiers patrolling and standing guard everywhere. Still, I didn’t dwell on it since it didn’t concern me.
Soon, we arrived at Dragon Rising Community.
My first plan was to head to the factory and find Elder Drake to ask about the Traditional Medicine Conference.
Just as I took out my phone, it rang.
The caller wasn’t a stranger—it was Lyla Lucas.
Seeing her number, my eyebrows immediately furrowed.
After hesitating briefly, I hung up without answering.
Almost instantly, the phone rang again.
With a deeper frown, I answered irritably, "What is it?"
Lyla sounded furious on the other end, though I sensed uncertainty in her voice—likely remembering Harvey Brown’s fate from our last encounter.
"You... Did you think I wanted to call you? Let me tell you, my grandpa wants to see you, otherwise I wouldn’t have bothered!" she declared stubbornly.
I fell silent at this news.
After a moment, I replied firmly, "I made it clear to your grandpa last time that I’ve severed all ties with the Lucas family. There’s no need for me to meet him."
