Chapter 1884: Back at the Station

Larissa walked out of her van, Jack and Mira walking out behind her. She looked around, noticing the limo that was pulled out of the divot on the side of the road. She saw the driver talking to the cops.

She noticed a ton of ice around the place, blocks of it still unmelting. She couldn’t imagine where that could’ve come from. She had yet to be reported.

She then walked into the woods, now bright with various light sources that had been prepared at the scene of the crime.

The Imp’s corpse lay at a rather inconspicuous location, with not any of the surrounding area disturbed, despite hearing about some fight taking place nearby.

She crouched down next to the corpse, examining it closely. The forensics team had already begun long before her, cameras flashing as they documented the scene from every angle. Larissa studied the caved-in chest, the broken ribs, and the blood pooled beneath the body.

There was not much sign of fight. No prolonged beating. No altercation as the Imp looked mostly unharmed.

It was a surreal feeling for Larissa to sit this close to the corpse of an Imp. She had certain misgivings about the lower races being hurt and abused by the society, but this time it was very different.

This Imp was far from the lowest of people in the society. And he was the one that did the harming and abusing. In a way, he was the antithesis to all of her beliefs, a living example of her hypocrisy.

Well, not living anymore.

There wasn’t much to gain from the surrounding. It was clear that there was no weapon or hidden evidence to be found. After a minute or so of looking around, Jack approached her, whispering something into her ear.

Larissa nodded, she stood and walked over to where Lightspeed, Frostveil, and Vanisher were being questioned by the cops.

"What happened here?" she asked.

Lightspeed stepped forward immediately. "I wasn’t involved, Detective. I arrived after everything was already over."

"And what did you see?" Larissa asked her.

"The corpse first. And then these three heroes sitting around over there. The one they took away already confessed to the murder."

Larissa nodded. "Thank you for your help. If we need anything else, we will call for you."

Lightspeed nodded. "Call me whenever you want. I’ll be no more than a few minutes away."

The man turned and walked away. After he was far enough, he sped up immediately, his body glowing brightly as he sped up faster than even a car could. He left behind a bright blur as he vanished into the distance within seconds.

Larissa turned to the remaining two. "You two witnessed the whole thing?"

"She did," Vanisher said. "I was missing during the part where Forgath was killed."

"I see. I will need the two of you to come by the station to give us your statement."

"Of course," Frostveil said with a nod.

There wasn’t much left to do anymore, so Larissa left the rest of the task to others and returned to the station. Ning was already brought back and placed in a holding cell for now.

Frostveil and Vanisher arrived almost the same time as Larissa did and were quickly taken to separate rooms.

The chief called her to his office before she got the chance to talk to them.

Larissa knocked on the door and walked in.

"Is there a chance he didn’t do it?" the chief asked.

"None. He pretty much confessed already. The only thing we can hope for now is hope his crimes aren’t as big as they appear to be."

The chief laughed mirthlessly. "He becomes a hero for one moment and already kills a billionaire. It won’t be as easy to sweep under the rug as we did the last one. What are we supposed to do in this situation?"

Larissa shrugged. "Just do what we’ve been doing all this time," she said. "We have a murderer in our midst, so we get justice."

The chief looked up. "You’re ready to throw him in prison?"

"No," Larissa said with no small amount of confidence. "I’m just betting on the fact that justice will be in our favor. You must know, sir, that Forgath was the Number 5 that we received the message from. He was the person that had been tapping into our network, watching our every movement."

"Damn them!" the chief cursed before nodding slowly. "Do what you must do. Forget about the media, the higher-ups, or anything else. I’ll handle that."

Larissa nodded and thanked the chief before walking out.

Mira quickly arrived, giving her a pair of headphones.

Larissa gave a strange look.

"The recording I made. Of Forgath."

Upon hearing Mira’s words, she quickly nodded and put on the headphones.

She listened to everything. Ning had started the call around the time he deposited Vanisher onto the roof and had been goading him into speaking out everything. The bribery, the news of the apocalypse, the confession of trying to kill him—everything was clear to hear on the phone call recording.

"Good," Larissa said. "This will be helpful. For now, where is Vanisher being kept?"

Vanisher leaned against his chair in the room, waiting for Larissa to walk in. The moment she did, he spilled everything the moment she sat down.

"The hero Blackfang made threats on Forgath’s life in the fundraiser party today, so Forgath hired us to protect him. But it was more than hiring. He somehow purchased our loyalty as well, despite the suppression field at the place."

"Once we left, he chased the limo. We tried to get away, but Blackfang kept chasing us, right until we swerved and the limo crashed into the divot. We got out and Frostveil managed to freeze Blackfang, but not for long. Blackfang then carried me to the top of a building and kept me there."

"He only came to get me after everything else was over. That is all I can tell you. Frostveil knows the rest."
