Chapter 607.2: Rescue Operation (2)

Further reinforcement arrived before Roel could put his plan into action.

“Swordheart,” Wilhelmina murmured solemnly.

The cold gleam of a sword flashed across Roel’s eyes, and the deluge of white light Nora was guarding against suddenly stalled to a halt. Then, right before their eyes, it was split into two, reduced into countless specks of light that returned to the aurora.

The tightly embracing Roel and Nora were taken aback.

“Darling!” Charlotte cried out.

Following that, a golden fluid suddenly appeared and tightly wrapped around the two of them. The Golden Soul rapidly slowed the speed of their descent while adjusting the trajectory of their fall.

Meanwhile, Wilhelmina quickly chased after them after neutralizing the deluge of white light. She quickly estimated the spot where they would land and swung her sword, releasing a sword arc.

Boom!

Sand was blasted into the air right where Nora and Roel were going to land.

The combined cushioning from the fluid Golden Soul and the sand had spared the two of them from severe injuries. However, the crisis wasn’t over yet, as another deluge of white light was charging at the two of them.

“Ten Fortresses.”

Standing beside Charlotte, Lilian channeled her mana into her Kingdom Origin Attribute, bringing the Fortress of Miracles from a thousand years ago back onto this world.

Torkis Fortress was lauded as the crystallization of humankind’s ingenuity in the Second Epoch. It was rumored to be so firm that even meteors couldn’t tear it down. Today, this legend would be put through its greatest test ever.

Right after the black fortress rose from the ground and sheltered Roel and the others, the deluge of white light rammed into the fortress. The tremendous impact shook the fortress walls, and white light irradiated the sky above. Yet, the legendary fortress stood its ground.

A long time later, the white light finally receded, and darkness returned to the world.

With his final sliver of strength, Roel turned to the golden-haired woman next to him.

Nora had already returned to her feet. She was saying something while checking on his body. Charlotte leaped right into his arms with tears streaming from her eyes. Behind her was an extremely agitated Lilian—this was an emotion he had never seen from her before. Last but not least, Wilhelmina was currently rushing over from a distance away.

Seeing the four of them safe and sound put his heart at ease. Before he knew it, his consciousness had started to blur. His eyelids felt terribly heavy, and the voices he heard slowly turned into incomprehensible white noise.

No, I can’t faint now.

This familiar sensation told Roel that he had reached his limit, but he couldn’t allow himself to pass out like that. He gathered every last bit of his clarity and forced himself to remain awake. He struggled to look at the sky, and he saw a perfectly clear starry sky, a billowing white fog, and a dimmed aurora.

The silver-haired girl was nowhere to be seen.

Alicia…

Roel’s heart sank when he realized that Alicia was no longer around. Then, he fainted.

“Roel! Roel!”

“Darling! Why? His injuries aren’t that severe… Could it be his soul? Lilian, do you know anything about this?”

“His soul? No, the Kingmaker Bloodline is powerful but it shouldn’t affect his soul.”

After surviving the ordeal, Nora, Charlotte, and Lilian immediately rushed over to check on Roel’s condition. It was also around then that Wilhelmina arrived to discuss their next course of action.

While they had managed to save Roel from Light Devourer’s attack through their impeccable teamwork, they knew that this was only the start.

Before Light Devourer’s attack in the sky died down, the mutated deviants on the ground had already reverted to black sludge. Thanks to that, they were able to quickly make their way over to where Roel was.

The Six Calamities had triumphed over the Egg of the Beast God, but this didn’t necessarily bode well for humankind.

The Egg of the Beast God and the Six Calamities were both humankind’s enemies, not to mention that Shrouding Fog had once spirited away Tark Stronghold. The Egg of the Beast God’s defeat was just a silver lining, changing humankind’s disastrous plight to a slightly less disastrous one.

Shrouding Fog had expended itself significantly in its fight against the Egg of the Beast God, and there was a huge army of hundreds of thousands of human transcendents in the desert. There was no saying that it wouldn’t launch an attack right away to replenish its undead army.

Furthermore, Alicia’s appearance had shaken up not just Roel but Nora and Charlotte as well. While they often argued and fought with one another, they still saw Alicia as a childhood friend. They didn’t know how Alicia had become associated with the Six Calamities and why she had launched an attack that endangered Roel, but they knew what their next course of action had to be.

They had to retreat with Roel right away and inform the Ascart House of the matter.

“The black sludge hasn’t completely disappeared yet,” Lilian said. “There’s probably still a breath left in the Egg of the Beast God. It could make a comeback. Furthermore, we still have to remain wary of the deviants too.”

“My father and the others are likely about to reach their limits too,” Wilhelmina said. “The three deviants’ Race Sovereigns could be returning at any time. We need to retreat right now!”

Nora and Charlotte exchanged glances before nodding.

Their mission objective had been met now that they had managed to rescue Roel. With the fight that had just broken out between the Egg of the Beast God and the Six Calamities, it was simply too dangerous for them to remain on this plot of land.

“How’s Roel?”

“There’s a problem with his soul, but he has no fatal wounds on his body. It should be fine to move him.”

“His soul? That’s even more reason for us to retreat right now.”

The four women came to a consensus to retreat right away, and they immediately acted on it.

As soon as Ten Fortresses dissipated into specks of light, Nora first dashed out to draw the attention of any enemies in the vicinity. Charlotte and Lilian then swiftly escorted Roel in a beeline toward the united army, with Wilhelmina guarding them along the way.

Moments later, a series of war horns sounded.

After days of intense battle, the united army finally concluded their operation and retreated from Hawe Desert.
