239 How did the mission go?

“Explain!”

“....”

Kairen, sitting on the ground on his knees, peeked at the commander glaring at him with deadly cold eyes.

What was going on? Why was this man so mad at him? Why was he called to the commander’s office as soon as he returned from the mission?

“Um... I... Completed the mission...”

He tilted his head while saying the only answer he came up with.

“And how exactly did you do that?”

The commander’s voice got even angrier.

“Uh...”

.....

Kairen shivered under the man’s gaze. He, who was injured head to toe and was exhausted as hell was welcomed like this as soon as he returned back. He had used up a lot of mana, had moved around all the day, and had done things that he thought were only possible at movies.

“I... Um...”

Had he done something wrong?

He couldn’t understand.

Didn’t things go just well? He did as well as he could... He didn’t achieve the results he wanted but it still didn’t end up that bad.. he even helped the soldiers...

What was he supposed to explain?

Seeing the look on Kairen’s face, the commander scowled and yelled again.

“Report anything you’ve done since you were teleported!”

“Y-yes!”

Kairen lowered his head and started to recall the things that had happened since morning.

Kairen was teleported to the borders where an intense fight was going on between the two countries. After examining his surroundings, he finally understood what he needed to do. He had to take care of the enemy commanders.

Or at least he thought.

That said, Kairen used flight magic to go up in the air, so high up that nobody would be able to see him. Thankfully, the uniform really had a mana concealing function so he was safe until he arrived at his destination.

What next? He concealed his presence as much as he could with a bunch of spells and tried to sneak into the camp. The main camp was actually a well-built building with a lot of guides and defensive barriers around it. It was actually a lot further away from the battlefield. Kairen first mistook it for the camps he saw from far away, but he found out that this place was the real place after moving around for a while.

Kairen had never done something like this before, so he wasn’t sure what he was supposed to do. In the end, he just flew up again and landed on the building’s rooftop where fewer soldiers were standing guard.

Taking care of them was not hard. Kairen managed to knock them unconscious using some spells and sneak in through the door on the rooftop.

Then, he walked inside until he reached the commanders’ office. He didn’t want to go any further, he was scared, to be honest. There were a lot of guards as well. It was hard to go through them and even if he did, he would be found out and even more, guards would come to him. Kairen was alone so he didn’t want to end up in a fight where he would be surrounded by tens of soldiers.

In the end, Kairen left the building again after finding out which floor were the commanders in, floated in the air again, threw some spells into the room through the window, and ran away.

He used a mixture of spells that would suck the air and knock the people unconscious without making any noise or harming them. It wouldn’t make any noises either so he was sure it was safe. Once he returned, the commanders were all unconscious.

He picked up all of the papers in the office, bind the people, hit them in the head to make them double unconscious, and then pulled out the teleportation device to move them to the headquarters with himself.

Turns out the commander suddenly going silent had made the guard worried, so just when Kairen was about to run away with the commander, he was attacked by a bunch of soldiers who barged inside the room all of a sudden.

He fought them of course. They wanted to kill him so he had to defend himself. But didn’t manage to beat them all because as he thought at first, the number was too many for him to handle. In the end, he had to give up on the captured commanders.

So he just flew out of the window once again and blew up the whole building and ran away.

He ran far away as he watched the building burn to ashes. He had used a high-level spell cast with his power, so he was sure that the place would be destroyed in no time.

As the main building was suddenly blown up, everyone panicked obviously. Everything got messy and the soldiers were left with no instructions. They didn’t know what they were supposed to do, save the commander, find the intruder, help the people fighting on the front lines, or report the situation.

In the end, the soldiers fighting on the front line attempted to retreat, but as they had lost their commanders and everything was in chaos, the soldiers of Hainston managed to stop them and so the tides of the battle changed to their favor.

In the end, the small battle on one of the borders ended with Hainston’s victory.

Kairen raised his head.

“This is what happened.”

“.....”

The commander looked down on him, speechless.

“You...”

After a few minutes of silence, he finally opened his mouth.

“You blew up the building?”

“...I’m sorry I couldn’t bring the commander and the others with me.”

Kairen lowered his head.

“No. That’s not-”

“But-”

Kairen cut off the commander’s words.

“I’ve got these!”

He pulled out something from the storage item he was using. The next second, a bunch of papers was in the palm of his hand.

“These papers were in their office. I skimmed through them and they had some information about their future attacks and information about their units’ formation and location.”

“....”

The commander glanced at the papers with his mouth half-open before taking them from Kairen and starting to immediately read through them.

‘My knees hurt...’

Why was he forced to sit on the cold ground like this anyway? Couldn’t he get up already?

“Sir, did I do something wrong?”

He really didn’t know why the commander was so mad at him.

“....”

Flip

“....”

Flip

Ignoring him completely, the commander flipped the pages and read the information on the papers.

“Your...”

Again, after a few minutes have passed, the man started to talk to Kairen.

“...Your mission was just...”

He was still looking at the papers with a blank face.

“To just aid our soldiers in battle...”

“....”

“It was your very first mission so we couldn’t send you to an important one...”

“....”

This time, it was Kairen’s turn to look up at the commander with a blank face.

“Yes?”

He tilted his head.

“But you... didn’t say anything...”

“Was there a need to explain such a simple mission?”

“...”

The commander sighed.

“Seems like there was.”

He was looking at Kairen as if he had met the number one idiot in the world.

“But... I still completed the mission!”

Kairen protested.

.....

“I helped them out anyway! I led them to victory!”

The commander sent a strange glare at him.

“Yeah, you sure did!”

He folded his arms.

“By blowing up their base and killing their commanders!”

“Uh!”

Kairen’s eyes opened wide.

“They died?”

He could see the commander scoff at him.

“What else did you expect after turning the whole building to ashes??”

“...”

Yeah. That was a stupid question to ask. Kairen knew it as well.

‘Now what?’

What was going to happen to him? He messed things up in the end.

“Kairen.”

“Yes, sir!”

He raised his head again upon hearing the commander’s voice.

Smile

The commander suddenly smiled. His lips curled up as he clenched the papers in his hands. The man suddenly looked so happy. The look on his face while he looked at the papers was almost like how one would look at the love of their life.

“You did well!”

He said, with the same smile on his lips while almost sending hearts to the papers through his gaze.

“....”

Kairen didn’t know what to say.

“You did a great job, but please do as you are told from now on.”

The man scolded him, but his voice wasn’t the same cold and angry voice as before.

“Uh... Sure...”

Kairen stared at the man with his mouth wide open.

‘So... If I mess things up later in a mission... and then bring him some information... He will overlook things?’

No. Why was he thinking about the possibility of messing things up? From now, even before his job had seriously started, why was he thinking about how to escape punishment once he messes up?

He shouldn’t mess things up at all!

It was enough! Kairen had decided to stop being a clumsy guy!

If possible... that is.
