Chapter 33 - The Mad Scientist's Lecture on Magic

Translator: Kakarott

Editor: imsara

My name is “Hart C”. With Iris, I came to the old Western-styled mansion in the corner of the school grounds. I didn’t want to come here again. I had no choice, but to complete an early dropout mission.

We walked into a messy room and told them that we wanted to join Professor Tia’s lab.

“That’s right… I finally got my enthusiasm…”

“I’m glad Dr. Lesei Yannnel.”

“Yeah, polkos. With this, the lab can survive until they graduate. I won’t let them get away!”

“Uh, I would rather disappear…”

“Did you say anything, Polkos!”

“Huh, no. Nothing…”

Sweaty uncle, sorry. It looks like you have a lot of circumstances, but please be patient for a while.

“So why don’t we have a welcome party. You have decided on the classes, right? Then, we won’t do anything during the orientation period.”

Then, can I go home already? My arm is thrown in and out.

“Thank you again, Hart. I wasn’t expecting such a welcome.”

No need to thank me on this.

“Now, I’m going to devote myself to a delicious meal for you. You see, Hart, you don’t have to look so uncomfortable. Despite my appearance, I’m very good at cooking. I’m a creative cook!”

You’re proud of your culinary creations. I have a bad feeling about this.

“So, can you prepare tea, Polkos? The tea leaves were… in the laboratory?”

I wondered why it was there, but the sweaty uncle left the room with a satisfied look on his face.

It is unlikely that I will be released for a while, and I can’t relax in such a messy room, but I can’t help it. That’s when I gave up and sat on books and things that were lying on the sofa.

“Ughaa!?”

The screams of Mr. Sweaty Uncle Polkos echoed.

“Is there something wrong? Let’s go.”

I wasn’t interested at all, but Iris pulled me into the corridor and jumped into the room at the end.

There-

“This guy… isn’t it that nobleman?”

A certain Schneiderian, who had gotten involved with me and Iris, had fallen white eyed. He was bound behind his back. In front of him, Mr. Polkos was hunched over.

What a mystery.

Who is the killer? Who killed him!?

“What happened, Polkos-oh? Oh, I forgot. Speaking of which.”

What a kid. Little Glasses Doctor was the criminal. Moreover, he wasn’t hurt and confessed.

“So, you yourself are trying to close down the laboratory.”

Murdering is a felony in this world. Moreover, the other person is the son of the Marquis family. For whatever reason, I think the death sentence is inevitable.

“Wait, wait. Is there any misunderstanding? He just fainted.”

Oh yeah

“He visited me out of the blue last night and asked “A strange enchantment was cast on me, I need you to check it out.”. He thought it was ancient magic because it was not something he knew about. However, I’ve been doing a lot of research and run out of steam at dawn. Of course, he was the one who did it, not me.”

Aristocrat, don’t you think that you’ve picked the wrong person?

“Yeah, that’s right. Let’s use him to give a lecture on ancient magic.”

Professor Tia looked happy and approached Schneider.

“Iris. Oh, I’ll imitate Hart’s way of calling you. Come over here and touch his right shoulder.”

Knowing that this was where he was injured, Iris felt reluctant to approach and touch his hand.

“Hmm? Is this… is something hard attached to it?”

“Can you see it?”

“No. The senses are clear, but the vision is not. I know something is there, I can feel it, but the boundaries are blurred.”

“Yeah, that’s great. I didn’t even know what I’m looking at. It’s completely colorless and transparent. It feels like a cylinder about two centimeters thick to the touch. I should call it a disk because its diameter is larger. The same thing is on the back side too.”

Professor Tia took a pen from the pocket.

“Now, the interesting part is from here. If you do this…”

The professor moved the pen close to the disc-shaped barrier and stabbed it on his shoulder. With a jolt, Schneider’s body bounced.

“It has passed through a transparent disk. After trying various things, it seems that things other than living beings will pass.”

Well, it can get in the way of bandages and clothes. It was set up like that.

“Hart, do you know what this is?”

“I do not know”

I have to love this place.

“What about Iris?”

After pondering for a while with a tense look, Iris fluttered.

“Don’t tell me it’s a creation magic…? No, it’s fixed by special conditioning in a certain area.”

“I’m sure you’re not just a good-looking guy who topped the written exam. I’m sure you’ll be able to find a way to make it work. It’s a realm that’s impossible for modern magic.”

Well, professor Tia continued saying shocking words in a casual tone.

“In short, this, It’s a barrier…”

“eh?”

The amazed voice belongs to Iris. However, I was surprised. Come on main body. She just figured it out.

“What is the difference between ancient magic and modern magic? Mr. Hart”

“It’s ancient magic.”

Don’t let out a sigh for the sake of it. Prompted by his eyes, Iris replies.

“It can’t be bound by attributes. It’s so-called attributeless magic.”

“Good answer”

Well, I knew that. That’s why I’m posing as a body of work to you guys. I have to pretend to be a failure, so I can’t give you serious answers.

Really?

“Barrier magic is also non-attribute magic. Rash…Researchers who see it are the mainstream though. However, the latest research that was advocated by me, naturally considered barrier magic as a strain of ancient magic.”

“With that idea, can’t we say that this magic that flourished in the past has now been reduced to basic supplementary magic?”

“Didn’t I say “a strain”? To be frank, we modern wizards are only able to use ancient magic as an aid.”

I see. So, it’s not warding magic that I’m using, but ancient magic? I’m not the guy who made the copy. I’m the guy who was made.

“Surprisingly, a day and a half has passed since this magic was applied.”

“It’s stupid. Even the barrier magic requires magic to be maintained. If the caster wasn’t on my side, I couldn’t hold it for half a day.”

“Don’t apply the common sense of modern magic to ancient magic. I’ll show you later, but there are several descriptions in literature that allows you to infer that it doesn’t require magic power to maintain it. Well, I can say that I noticed it because it was me.”

Professor Doya’s face, Tia, continued,

“Anyway.”

“I’m sure you’ll be able to find out more about this,” he said, “after all, it’s the magic used by mythical class monsters. That Great Sage Grunfeldt is also a very blue group. The only people who can use it today are the demon king who is said to have reached the magic level of 100. That is if you know ancient magic.”

“…”

“Unfortunately, there is no demon king in this world anymore. I hate the Lighting Princess, but it’s a good thing that she defeated the demon king. If the Demon King wanted to, he could have reduced the city to ashes in an instant.”

“There is a limit to the strength of each individual. People are excellent as “herds.” Therefore, the devil lost.”

“That’s one way to put it. From what I’ve heard, the Demon King was either not on his guard or planning to lose from the start.”

“…”

“Oops. Are there sons of the Demon King subjugation members here?”

Hmm? Oh, you mean me. But, my dad is a diversionary force. So, he didn’t fight the Demon Lord directly. That’s right.

However, from the current story, it’s hard to think that I’m using ancient magic. Because, it’s useless unless the magic level is extremely high, right? I’m a magic level 2. There is no doubt that it was the case even with measurement that can display three digits.

But, the story itself is interesting. My barrier magic is similar to ancient magic. Then, if you pursue the ancient magic, various applications will be possible.

It may be okay to have Professor Tia at the castle if the lab collapses. I will record this in my brain and pass it to the main body.

“I’m afraid that I’m getting off track. I’m sure the Hafen heir has been accused of using ancient magic. I’m curious if that’s the case. I’m not sure who used this magic.”

Professor Tia looked at Iris with a sharp gaze.

“…I’m not. I can’t use such advanced magic.”

“Hmm. I don’t think you’re that awesome. But, I’m not sure?”

“I can’t say that. I promised him to be silent…”

It’s like I said that I knew it. See, Professor Tia looks happy.

“He. Okay, very well. You seem to be very serious about this, so it’s not fair to ask any more questions. Well, I guess I’ll just have to ask someone who is familiar with the matter.”

Professor Tia moves the pen and,

Zaku

“Gihyaahhhhhh!”

“Doctor what are you doing?”

A pen pierced Schneider’s right shoulder, and Mr. Polkos, who had been holding it down, panicked.

I mean, isn’t it too bad for the Marquis family?

“You didn’t say ‘who’. I’ve run out of patience. I think he knows what he’s talking about. Come on, spit it out.”

Huh? However, I didn’t seem to tell the nobleman to keep his mouth shut, did I? I don’t know how it was. Anyway.

“He’s fainted again?”

Alas, Schneider screamed and blew bubbles then collapsed.
