Kill-stealing a Monster

The player attacked by the enraged Boar King only managed to last a single round. After a second attack, he turned into a beam of light and returned to the city.

“Retreat! Retreat!” One of Beacon’s elders, Lan Xi, immediately called for the guild members to retreat.

More and more people began to arrive. Besides the massive number of unaffiliated players, there were also several other guilds: ‘Misty Rain Tower’, ‘Sword Brand Pavilion’, ‘Hidden Dragon Courtyard’…

The guild system had yet to be unlocked, so these guild members had been gathered together by the guild’s own organization system. On the surface, they were no different from unaffiliated players.

But their unconscious discipline and their excellent equipment made them very easy to differentiate from ordinary unaffiliated players.

At this time, the unaffiliated players could only impatiently watch from the edge for an opportunity to snipe the boss.

All the players had already seen the Boar King’s power for themselves. This was the game’s opening day, and the highest-level player on the ranking was Nangong Qi, who was only Level 18.

But the Boar King was a Level 25 boss. Purely in terms of level, it was far above the players, and it was also a gold boss.

For ordinary players, who had an average level of about 10, even if they had put all their points into Constitution, they would have still been wiped out by just two regular attacks from the Boar King.

In the face of such a powerful boss, not even those guilds that often claimed to be number one dared to be reckless and try to take it for themselves.

Under the leadership of the Beacon guild, the officers from the other guilds got together and began to discuss how to deal with the boss.

After all, this was a game. Even the strongest boss would eventually fall to a massive number of players.

After the discussions, the guilds gathered their best members and began to probe the boss.

One of the players from ‘Beacon’, Qin Yuming, was the main tank of the guild. He was already at Level 16, and the guilds had coordinated to give him a complete set of blue equipment, with two pieces of equipment even being purple. His HP was boosted to a level that had been very difficult to achieve before this: 20,000!

He was now the one to pull the monster, entering the Boar King’s aggro range. The enraged Boar King instantly charged over.

But Qin Yuming did not immediately turn into a white beam of light and disappear. His HP dropped by one-tenth. From this, one could see just how high the Boar King’s attack power was.

Qin Yuming hastily used his ‘Sturdy Armor’ skill. A layer of earthen yellow armor appeared around him, significantly boosting his defense.

Other guild members, under the command of their respective officers, began to unleash their skills against the Boar King in salvo after salvo.

These guild member elites were clearly well-trained. They had divided into several teams. One group specialized in healing, one group specialized in offense, and another group was responsible for taking the aggro off Qin Yuming when he was reaching his limit so that his skills could come off cooldown.

Everything seemed to be on the right track. The organizational power of these big guilds seemed foreordained to take down this seemingly heaven-defying gold boss that had annihilated several hundred players the moment it had appeared.

The Boar King’s HP continued to fall. After ten minutes, it was at 70%.

“Bellowing Charge!” At this moment, the Boar King used a skill it had not used before. Lifting its giant tusks, the Boar King paused, paced at the ground once or twice, and then charged at Qin Yuming.

“Get ready!” Qin Yuming was a gaming veteran, so when he saw this posture, he instantly knew that this skill wasn’t going to be easy to deal with. Determining that he probably couldn’t hold, he hurriedly called out to the off-tanks.

Boom!

A giant spike of earth erupted out of the ground, instantly killing Qin Yuming.

Even more tragic was that the earth spike’s area of effect was not merely restricted to directly in front of the Boar King as Qin Yuming had expected. Rather, there were twelve spikes that emerged in all directions, essentially wiping out all the off-tanks who had been preparing to take the aggro.

And this wasn’t even considering the attackers. Countless white beams of light shot into the air as they were sent back to the city by the Boar King.

Only those players lucky enough to be between the earth spikes were able to survive.

A dumbstruck off-tank took the aggro from the Boar King, but because of that abrupt assault, a significant number of healers had died. In the midst of this chaos, it took only half a minute for this off-tank to die.

Another massacre ensued, the Boar King charging here and there and sending the elites of the guilds back to the spawn point.

Fortunately, an elder of one of the guilds was still alive and was able to call for a hasty retreat, thus preventing the group from being completely wiped out.

“Trash! All trash!” Atop the tree, Meng Jingtian rolled his eyes and grumbled.

But he was just complaining for complaining’s sake. Was there any new boss that didn’t take several deaths to take down?

Meng Jingtian also understood this principle, so he continued to patiently squat on the tree.

Those big guilds naturally wouldn’t give up because of a small setback like this. They quickly organized themselves again, summarized their experiences from last time, and once more began to surround the boss.

They fought the boss again and again, taking up almost the entire afternoon. Almost all the guild members had died three or four times, but they had finally ground down the Boar King to a sliver of HP.

Two hundred thousand… one hundred and fifty thousand… one hundred thousand!

The Boar King’s HP was slowly draining away. Meng Jingtian arched his body and stared at the nearby Boar King.

He would have only one chance, so he needed to precisely calculate the Boar King’s remaining HP.

Otherwise, with so many players present, if he misfired his one skill, he would be instantly killed, meaning that he had wasted his entire afternoon squatting around.

Twenty thousand! The Boar King only had twenty thousand HP left. Everyone’s hearts leapt to their throats. After grinding this boss for an entire afternoon, they couldn’t help but wonder what sort of rewards would drop.

What would the system reward them with for being the first to kill a gold boss? In any case, at least they would get their names on the announcement!

Almost all the players who were participating in the boss raid couldn’t help but dream. They could already see the dazzling equipment and titles before them.

But just when the Boar King’s last sliver of HP was about to disappear, when the moment everyone was looking forward to was about to arrive, a dazzling bolt of white lightning crashed into the Boar King’s head.

“Ding! Congratulations to Player Meng Jingtian for being the first to kill Gold-grade Field Boss ‘Enraged Boar King’! Reward: 1 Guild Formation Token, Title (Purple Unique): Humanity’s Brave, Level + 3!”

The system’s announcement left all the guild players dumbstruck. Why wasn’t it any of the teams? They were all grouped! Had one of the unaffiliated players really managed to steal the kill?

“Ding! Congratulations for leveling up!”

“Ding! Congratulations! Title obtained: Humanity’s Brave! Because the player is of the God Race, the system has automatically converted this to Title: Divine Brave!”

The enormous amount of EXP from the Boar King and the system’s reward instantly raised Meng Jingtian’s levels by 5, causing him to surpass Nangong Qi and take first place.
