Chapter 480 Kayla's stubbornness
Samuel exited the vehicle with Elise in his arms; it was already dark when he returned to the Orphanage. He was uneasy throughout the journey, but when he saw people waiting for him in the courtyard, his mind relaxed.
He was careful with the route; someone could follow them back to their base, exposing Samuel's identity as the assailant. Fortunately, they had no tail; it looked like he was successful in spooking the enemy.
He had already told Jane to prepare and find the position from where the mastermind was transmitting. He could attack now, but he wanted to catch bigger fish and put the hatchet to rest once and for all.
Ultimately, they pulled out a couple of excellent ghost soldiers in recon and put them on the enemy's tail. There was a high chance that they would lead them straight back to their main camp. At least, that was what Samuel hoping for.
Michelle, Mayra, and Kayla were waiting for him, along with the team leader for the ghost soldier. Few voices were heard from inside, mostly of children enjoying their dinner. Samuel didn't know about the situation as he left as soon as he arrived at the Orphanage earlier, but hearing laughter, it didn't appear the situation was too bad.
" Is she alright?" Mayra came running and started inspecting Elise. He handed her to Mayra; Elise was still sleeping and probably didn't even know anything, which was a good thing in hindsight.
" Yes, she is only sleeping. She will wake up in couple of hours, they put heavy dosage of sleeping agent in her body." He explained. There were few syringe marks on her body, which meant she was heavily sedated.
But how they cared for her and didn't hurt her meant that she was important to them. With such a large army being mobilized for a little girl, she was more memorable than he anticipated. But he didn't want to dwell on it right now.
" That's terrible! Are you sure she is not hurt anywhere?" She asked again.
" I checked. There is not a single scratched on her body except her old injuries." He said.
" Alright, I believe you. I am going to put her to bed first." Mayra replied. Even if she wanted to check her body here, she feared horrendous marks on her body due to previous abuse; it would only make everyone look at her with unnecessary pity.
" I will show you to an empty room. And Samuel is it? Thank you for your help, there is a bath in the back. Clean up first, I will ask someone to prepare your meal." Mechella asked and went inside with Mayra.
" Thank you." Samuel couldn't help but feel remorseful. Even though it was not his fault, he had indirectly implicated the Orphanage. He needs to protect everyone here until things calm down.
Immediately after they left, Kayla came and blocked his way like she was waiting for everyone to go back. She had a darkened expression, quietly staring into his eyes without saying anything.
" Young master, I will go ahead first."
" I am coming with you! We have to devise 'that' plan, don't you remember?" Steve also tagged along, leaving everyone with their own excuses.
" I will do that task that you gave me! I will not disappoint you boss!" Jane saluted and wanted to run away when Drac caught her.
" You will need help since I have a lot of foreign connections. Take me with you."
" I don't need any help, it's simple surveillance."
" Don't be like that, I am coming with you one way or another." Drac dragged Jane with him even while she kept protesting.
"..." Cho had no excuse and panicked when someone came to his rescue.
" I should go and guard the premises with Mr. Cho. We can never be too ready." The team leader said and took the rest of his men and Cho with him. Cho was eternally grateful for his help and immediately declared him a friend in his heart. At least he was better than his so-called friends who abandoned him without a second thought!
Ze was the only one left standing, still puzzled about why everyone had left in a hurry. Unlike others, he was late to notice social cues. Not to traumatize him, Samuel himself gave him a task.
" Go and see Adrian, drive him toward our bunker just in case."
" You got it, boss!" Ze said enthusiastically and went away with a happy smile. Unlike the other boss himself gave him a task personally, it showed how much he cared about him! Within a minute, only Kayla and Samuel stood in the courtyard.
" Stop drilling holes in my body with those intense stares. You are making me uncomfortable." Samuel said it out loud. It was a little harsh, but he wanted to keep things simple and accurate, especially in front of Kayla, who was prone to sense lies due to the nature of her work.
" I can't believe you have the nerve to make a joke right now!" Kayla was furious. The first time she saw Samuel exiting the car, she noticed the blood all over his body and panicked, not knowing if he was hurt.
Unlike Mayra, who had complete confidence in him, she was seeing him for the first time going openly on such a dangerous mission. Moreover, she would have gone with him if he had told her. He was only a teenager compared to the shit she had been through in her career!
" I am only trying to lighten the mood, I should get clean up or else the children will be scared if they see me. Hahaha." He said and tried to brush her off. He very well knew what she wanted to hear from him.
But no matter the situation, he would have done the same, given a second chance. It was the type of thing he couldn't openly say, or he would have to face her wrath! It was one of the things that he couldn't change about himself.
" You bastard!" She lunged at him, attacking his face with a frontal kick, but he stepped back to avoid it. But just then, her other leg came from the other side, attacking his torso, which he narrowly avoided. She seemed to go all out but could only grit her teeth as he would dodge her every move.
" I am sorry alright? I didn't mean to make you worry." Samuel grabbed her leg and pulled her in his arms. She didn't stop attacking and used her fist. Even at such a close distance, she missed every shot to his face, so she changed tactics and mercilessly attacked his chest.
" Alright calm down. Don't worry I am here." He didn't flinch and kept consoling her.
" Who is worried about you bastard!? How could you do such a dangerous thing?!" Her hands lost power as she slowly succumbed to his pampering. She was now hitting him with light punches, and suddenly, it all stopped as she pushed her head into his chest and began sobbing.
Samuel was momentarily surprised but began caressing her hair to calm her down. He felt guilty but was somewhat happy to see her react like this. It meant she cared greatly for him, which he felt undeserved of.
After a few minutes, she calmed down and lifted her face. She tried to hide her messy face, but Samuel grabbed her and pushed up her chin to look her dead in the eyes.
" It makes me happy that a beautiful girl like you worries about me." His smile was charming, which immediately made her blush. She wiped her tears to reveal her puffy eyes. She felt he was making a fool of her, which made her furious!
" Worry for an idiot like you? Dream on! And go take a shower, you stink!" She pinched her nose, trying to make fun of him, but it only made her look cuter! Samuel was not expecting to be dealt such damage out of the blue; his heart couldn't take it anymore!
" I am sure there is plenty of room for both of us! Why don't you come with me?" He leaned in for a kiss, but she pushed him off. The rouge was trying to get away scotch-free? How could she let him off so quickly!
" Fuck you! Get away from me!" She tried to run away, but he caught her and planted a kiss while she kept struggling. She clutched her jaw, refusing access to her tongue; in the end, Samuel had to let her go. She even wiped her lips after it to show her disgust; she was stubborn and refused to show any affection to someone who made her die with worry!
As soon as she got free, she fled the scene while giving him the stink eye along the way. She even acted childish and showed him her tongue on her way out. Samuel didn't know whether to laugh or cry.
He had to go alone, dodging anyone who would see him in bloodied clothes. He didn't want to repeat what happened with Kayla; it would only make them worry to see him like this. He took a long shower to remove any lingering smell of blood and soot clinging to his clothes.
When he went out after changing clothes, he found Manager Kim waiting for him in the reception area. He knew he couldn't avoid it and decided to come clean with others.
