496 Own Rules?

Ever since they hired an ice delivery man, the first ice delivery man who came back from town every day would help their family buy vegetables from the market.

It wasn’t time for that person to come back from buying groceries yet.

There were already quite a few people on the vast paddy field. They were either people who had picked out rice to dry or people who were waiting at the paddy field to help their families dry their rice. There were also some older people and children lounging around. These people were helping to chase away the birds so that they wouldn’t steal the rice that was being dried. The village chief had already allocated the spots for each family to dry their rice, so there was no need to fight over it. It was quite orderly.

The size of the rice drying position was not the same for each household. Instead, it was divided according to the number of rice grains planted by each household.

Their family had 14 acres of land, so the land they were given to dry the rice was quite large compared to other families.

The paddy field was only so big. No matter how big the land was, not much rice could be harvested.

Therefore, when the sun was high, they had to quickly dry some of the rice and harvest them. Then, they would dry the rest of the rice. Every year, when the rice seedlings were planted in the evening, they would usually dry the rice.

This was because they had been put away in the sun to prevent mold from growing, but they had not been completely dried. If they wanted to be completely dried and preserved for a long time, they had to be dried many times.

The grains that were used to pay taxes had to be especially dry. Otherwise, the imperial court would not want them and would even punish them for their crimes.

The imperial court would harvest the early rice every year one month after the season. One month was more than enough for each household to dry the rice.

When it was time to harvest the rice, the imperial court would come to collect taxes, and they would only come one month after the harvest.

These were all regulated by the Imperial court.

Jiang Yue and Xue Yan helped dry the rice for a while. She felt that the vegetables should be bought and it was time to prepare lunch, so she stopped drying the rice and went home with Xue Yan.

Sure enough, the vegetables were brought back.

He only bought the ingredients that she asked him to.

“Jiang Yue, are you and Xue Yan really going to cook? I can do it.” Li Hehua was worried that cooking would tire out Jiang Yue and Xue Yan.

“You can just help me make the ice. I’ve seen my mother cook a lot of dishes. I know how to make them. If I can’t get it, I’ll ask Xue Yan to do it.” Jiang Yue reassured her.

Xue Yan was putting the vegetables into the basket and was about to carry them to Xue Dagui’s house, but he paused when she heard this.

“Alright then. Then you and Xue Yan have to be careful with your knives.” Li Hehua looked at Xue Yan, “Be careful. Don’t let the knife hurt you two.”

“I won’t.” Xue Yan agreed. However, he felt that even if the vegetable knife could hurt him, it would not be able to hurt Jiang Yue.

Liu Guixia walked over and smiled. “With you guys cooking, we both will have a much easier time. We can also help make more ice. However, don’t tire yourselves out. If you’re tired, just tell us. We can do it for you.”

“I know, we will.” Jiang Yue agreed.

“Understood.” Xue Yan also responded.

“Off you go then. Be careful when you wash the vegetables by the river. Don’t fall in. If you don’t have to go to the river, then don’t.”

Jiang Yue and Xue Yan naturally agreed.

In the morning, Yifu had helped them put oil, salt, sauce, vinegar, and other seasonings in Xue Dagui’s kitchen. Now, they only needed to bring the ingredients that they had just bought over to cook them.
