Chapter 739 - Anything For You (2)

Li Meili filled him in on the things that were happening at the competition and Zhang Jiren listened intently. He hadn't thought that there's that kind of thing happening at the somewhat prestigious contest, but he wasn't surprised at all.

Li Meili played with a strand of her hair, her eyes sweeping the room, finally noticing some of the details she failed to notice earlier. There was a sparkly, colorful mobile rotating over the crib. Since she was able to convince her husband not to tear the hardwood flooring, Zhang Jiren decided to cover it with carpet instead.

On the other side of the room, there were dinosaur toys and teddy bears neatly placed on top of the drawers. Next to the crib, there was a well cushioned rocking chair that was no doubt prepared just for her.

Zhang Jiren was doing his part well that made Li Meili a little guilty over it. Wasn't he going too far on his pretending? Did he really have to do all of these for her and Leyan?

However, thinking about it, this made their relationship more believable in the public's eyes. Zhang Wuying would never suspect that the baby in her stomach was Tang Beixuan's at this rate. According to her husband, until this day, that crazy old woman hadn't still gotten over her son's death.

Li Meili let out a weak smile at that. Half a year had passed, and, although she was doing well with her married life with Zhang Jiren, there were still days that she was missing Tang Beixuan so badly. No matter how time passed quickly, he would always be in her heart.

She still remembered the old days she spent with him and regretted the amount of time she had wasted, avoiding him, deluding herself that she wasn't in love with him. If she'd known that he would be gone so soon, she should have cherished the days with him.

"Perhaps you would also need to kick those two judges from the panel." Zhang Jiren's voice brought her to reality. "You can't possibly win unless you can get rid of them."

"But wouldn't that mean I'm declaring war on Liu Ruoyan?" she retorted. She didn't want her name to be dragged in a scandal anyway and was planning to anonymously file a complaint against Liu Ruoyan and the two judges.

"War?" Zhang Jiren chuckled, "You are too forgiving, Li Meili. You shouldn't give her an opportunity to counterattack."

Li Meili sighed inwardly. How could she forget that her husband was a businessman? Of course, he wouldn't allow the other party to take advantage of her. Since she wasn't as good as her best friend and her husband, how could she understand their ways?

"And how am I supposed to do that, dear husband?" She raised a brow at him.

Zhang Jiren was caught off guard by how she addressed him, but easily recovered from his shock.

'She was just teasing you,' he reminded himself. 'You don't have to take it seriously.'

"That could be arranged. Don't worry you wouldn't be implicated in it," he assured her.

Li Meili fell silent. Would she really allow him to help her? Hadn't he done enough for her already? To think that he was willing to go to this extent to help her, Li Meili wasn't sure how she would be able to return this favor to him.

"You are leaning to decline my help," Zhang Jiren commented.

She forced a small smile. Was she really that obvious? She didn't think that Zhang Jiren could understand her so easily. There weren't many people who'd pay attention to her, considering how intimidating her strong personality was at times.

When she first heard about Zhang Jiren, she thought that he was prim and proper and also arrogant by the way people spoke of him. Even Tang Beixuan was intimidated by him at first, but a friendship had bloomed between the two as they spent more time with each other.

Perhaps this was why Li Meili wasn't uncomfortable in Zhang Jiren's presence. His coldness and silence reminded her of Tang Moyu who only allowed the people close to her to see the real her, and not caring how the public perceived her.

"Don't, Meili," he said. "I want to be the perfect husband for you even though we're going to be married only for two years. Allow me to help you. Take some time and think about it."

"Alright," she conceded. "I'll let you know and Jiren…" She paused, paying attention to his reaction.

"Yes?"

"Thank you." Thank you for doing your best for me and Leyan. Thank you for everything.

There wern'te enough words for Li Meili to use as she couldn't thank him enough for all the sacrifices and effort he'd done for her sake. She was a person who didn't like being in debt to others and wondered if she could do anything in return for her husband.

"Anything for you. I'm glad to help." Zhang Jiren smiled. "Now, why don't we go downstairs? You must be hungry."

He led her outside the nursery and walked with Zhang Jiren purposely slowing down for his wife.

"Downstairs? Don't you mean we're taking the elevator?" she said with a teasing tone.

Next to the staircase, there was an elevator that was recently installed. Zhang Jiren had insisted on adding one in their villa as he didn't want Li Meili to climb up and down the stairs as her pregnancy progressed.

Li Meili, on the other hand, was really annoyed with him someties. She thought that Zhang Jiren was overdoing it.?But when she told it to her best friend, Tang Moyu only shrugged and mentioned that it was only appropriate given how clumsy she could be at times.

She couldn't believe it. She had thought that Tang Moyu didn't approve of her husband but why did the two suddenly start to be on the same side these days? Was she missing something? Why did she feel that the two suddenly found themselves on the same page?
