Chapter 671 - Momento (1)

Li Meili knew that she was at fault this time. What Zhang Jiren said was right and whatever sins Zhang Wuying or the other Zhang family members committed against her best friend, it was not right to put the blame on him who had nothing to do with any of it.

Why did she have to mention it right in his face anyway? If it hadn't been for that, she wouldn't have to feel so guilty towards the man who had just saved her from his own vicious older brother right now.

No matter what kind of prejudice she had against the Zhangs, she had to admit that Zhang Jiren was oddly different compared to his relatives, just like what Tang Beixuan told her before.

She wasn't completely ignorant of Zhang Jiren's character. Through her lover, Li Meili was able to find out a few things about the man. Tang Beixuan, who was initially wary of him, had earned his respect through the few months of working together. Li Meili wasn't sure if she should believe her boyfriend or not, as she didn't have many encounters with Zhang Jiren.

She glimpsed at him and noticed that they were seated a little far from each other in the backseat of his car. Even at this late hour, Zhang Jiren was still busy working on his laptop as if it was more interesting to deal with it right now compared to talking to her.

Li Meili looked outside and cupped the side of her face. Light rain was starting to pour and she hoped that she would be able to get home safely before it rained hard.

As exhaustion caught up with her, Li Meili didn't notice that she had started to doze off next to Zhang Jiren. When the man was finally done with his work, closing his laptop, he finally noticed that Li Meili had fallen asleep with her head leaning on her side and his coat sprawled on her l.a.p.

Zhang Jiren put away his laptop, crossed his arms and shut his eyes. He had to admit that this day was exhausting for him too. By this time, he should be at home, getting ready for bed. He shouldn't be here in Beijing. trying to clean the mess Zhang Liang had started.

Darn him. He cursed Zhang Liang inwardly. He would rather be in Shenzhen, close to his twin sister, than be here right now. His thoughts were forced into a halt when he felt Li Meili's head on his arm, an usual heat coming from her.

"Hey," Zhang Jiren gently pushed her away before placing a hand on her forehead. She was burning with fever. He immediately frowned. He was sure that she wasn't even warm when he held her hand earlier. In fact, she was unusually cold, so how come she was suddenly burning with fever now?

If Li Yuanyi knew she was sick, Zhang Jiren didn't think the man would bring his own sister to tonight's event. Even if Li Yuanyi didn't admit it, Zhang Jien could tell that he valued Li Meili more than their own parents.

"Bring us to the nearest hospital and make sure to block the news about it." Zhang Jiren told his driver, eager to know what was wrong with Li Meili now. He then decided to give Li Yuanyi a call, but the man didn't pick up his calls, so Zhang Jiren thought that Li Yuanyi was currently occupied at the party they just left.

In ten minutes, they arrived at the hospital and were immediately led to a private ward where a doctor could check on Li Meili. Zhang Jiren carried Li Meili, who only g.r.o.a.n.e.d in her sleep, her brow knitted together, with him.

He was caught off guard when he felt a warm liquid on his right hand and was shocked to see a smear of blood on his palm once he placed Li Meili on the bed.

The doctor saw what he had on his hand and immediately started checking on the sleeping Li Meili while Zhang Jiren was led away by one of the nurses. Zhang Jiren snapped out of his daze and went to the washroom to wash off the blood that was smeared on his hand.

Was Li Meili on her monthly period? But was it usual for women to burn with fever when they had it? Zhang Jiren didn't think so. It wasn't his place to question Li Meili about her s.e.x life, but if she and Tang Beixuan had that kind of relationship, it wasn't too far fetch for him to think that Tang Beixuan had left behind a pregnant girlfriend in his death.

'Shit.' He thought in shock. Would this make things complicated? If Zhang Wuying knew that Li Meili was pregnant with her son's child, Zhang Jiren had no doubt that the crazy old woman would forcefully take the child away from its mother, or maybe, she would use the child to make a claim and threaten the Li family.

Zhang Jiren once again attempted to call Li Yuanyi, hoping that this time, Li Meili's brother would pick up his call. After three rings, Li Yuanyi finally answered his call, much to Zhang Jiren's relief.

"What's up? You already sent Meili home?" Li Yuanyi asked him at once. Did Zhang Jiren call him to discuss the business deal they had just agreed on? Li Yuanyi didn't think it was the right time to discuss it, so why would CEO Zhang call him incessantly?

"No, I brought her to the hospital. I'll send you the address. Come here as soon as you can." Zhang Jiren informed him, as he walked back to where he had left Li Meili. He wasn't allowed to fill up the form for the patient and could only wait for Li Yuanyi to arrive.

"Wait. What?" He could hear the worry lacing Li Yuanyi's tone. "Did something happen?" He heard Li Yuanyi excused himself, his footsteps indicating he was in a hurry.
