It was almost midnight when Feng Tianyi finally had time to himself after tucking the children in their beds. As he entered the master bedroom, he was reminded that he would be sleeping alone tonight again.
He sat on the side of the bed and checked his phone, expecting to see a message from his wife, but there was none. Was she angry at him? He wondered. Tang Moyu probably knew by now that Liu Ruoyan showed up today, courtesy of their children.
He contemplated for a moment if he should give her a call or not, wondering if she was already asleep by this time. Not being able to take it any longer, Feng Tianyi dialed his wife's number, feeling his heart thumping painfully in his c.h.e.s.t.
"I thought you wouldn't call." He heard Tang Moyu's calm and cold tone on the other end of the line.
"Moyu…" Suddenly, Feng Tianyi realized that he didn't know what to tell her. Should he explain to her that he didn't mean any of it to happen while she was gone?
"What is it? Did you call me just to hear my voice or do you want to say something?" Tang Moyu probed him.
Sighing to himself, Feng Tianyi ran a hand on his face.
"Moyu, what happened earlier… I'm sorry."
"Tell me first what you've done for you to apologize to me like this." His wife demanded.
Darn it, did she really want to make him feel guiltier than he already did?
"I... " He hesitated. "I'm sorry, I let Baobao and Little Star see me in such an awkward position with another woman. She was the last woman I've been seeing before my accident."
There was a momentarily silence between them which made Feng Tianyi even more nervous. Can't she at least say something?
"You didn't ask her to come to you?" She questioned him.
"Of course not! Why would I do something like that?" He defended himself.
"Then I fail to see the need for you to apologize to me right now. Unless you slept with that woman and had a child with her, Tianyi, do you think so lowly of me? Do you think that my love and trust in you are so shallow that I would jump into baseless conclusions?"
"I…" Feng Tianyi had no words to refute that. He initially thought that she would be mad at him by allowing their children to see one of his ex-girlfriends.
"Tianyi, I trust you. Why do you think I married you? I have given you my heart, knowing that there's a possibility that you might betray me one day. Do you think I'm so petty that I would start a catfight just because you've been with another woman before meeting me? They were all in the past, so you better make sure they remain in the past."
Feng Tianyi suddenly felt a complex wave of emotions washed through him upon hearing her words. The nervousness and doubt in his heart and mind dissipated by her honesty. Hadn't she promised him her future? So why was he worrying about the women from his past?
He shut his eyes and allowed himself to flop on the soft bed. He covered his eyes with one arm, pressing his phone on his ear as he listened to Tang Moyu's voice. His nose caught a scent of his wife. The scent that lingered in the room reminded him of Tang Moyu.
"I understand now, Moyu. Thank you…" For trusting me, for loving me.
"Don't apologize to me unless you've done something wrong next time. As for Liu Ruoyan, let me deal with her." He heard Tang Moyu say, which left him a little confused.
Huh? Feng Tianyi didn't remember telling the empress Liu Ruoyan's name. How did she find out? Ah, the twins… he should know better than expecting that those two won't be her best informants.
Now, he was curious as to how Tang Moyu would deal with Liu Ruoyan. Why was he worrying about Liu Ruoyan bothering the empress? He actually became witness to how even the 'mighty' Tang family and the Han family succ.u.mbed to the empress and met their end.
Feng Tianyi finally calmed down and spoke a few words to his wife, before deciding to retire for the night. At least, he wouldn't have to worry about Tang Moyu being mad at him for now.

Tang Moyu made another phone call late that night. Her eyes flashed dangerously upon looking at Liu Ruoyan's face. She wasn't aware that once upon a time, her husband preferred rice fields over bountiful mountains.
"Moyu?" Li Meili's sleepy voice could be heard from the other line. "Are you back in Shenzhen?" She asked which was followed by a yawn, clearly indicating that she had just woken up.
"No, I'm still here in Linyi City. Meili, do you have a minute? I need Black Nightingale's helpful hand at the moment."
"Oh?" That surely captured Li Meili's undivided attention, snapping her out of her daze. She sat up from her bed and glanced at the time on her bedside table. From the empress's tone, Li Meili was sure that Tang Moyu was up to something fun again."
"What is it? You better make sure that this would be worth my time." She demanded with anticipation in her voice.
"Sure. We will be hitting two birds with one stone this time, Meili. Are you with me?"
