Chapter 407: Natives (4)

"Leader-2, report." the communication supervisor quickly follow-up with the communication. But not even a single reply came back from the vanguard team.

"Leader-2, report your status! Unit-2, what's your status, over?" the supervisor turned his attention to the remaining four team members in the second unit, but the communication channel remained eerily quiet.

"Base Leader," the supervisor shifted his attention to Alex and shook his head gently. From the gesture alone, it means that the worst thing could have happened to the unit.

"Did something happen?" the sound of someone close to Alex came into the communication channel as the operation room went silent for a minute. And to Alex, the owner of this voice just happened to come in precisely when he needed his support.

"Tianci. What makes you reporting in at this time?" Alex asked. He hates to admit it but hearing Zhang Tianci's voice made him look like a child in excitement.

"I saw some misfired laser beam going off in the air from a distance. Is there a fight going on somewhere?" Zhang Tianci asked. His sensitivity was surprisingly above everyone else. Perhaps even the closest vanguard team around team-1 and team-2 would miss that.

"You guessed correctly. There's a fight happening at the seventeenth zone. I need you to make haste there to provide cover fire. Can you do it?" Alex asked. His fingers were tapping on the tablet computer he was holding.

Using a few simple gestures, all the relevant confidential files were transferred to Zhang Tianci's personal APV. Unlike the others with some restrictions on accessible files, Zhang Tianci's personal APV had the exclusive right to all the files in this operation base.

His right to access all data was the same as Alex's, the second position in the command hierarchy.

"Hmm… What is the current status of the team?" Zhang Tianci asked. His eyes were glued on the APV's display while he waited for Alex's reply.

"Two engagements. Four teams are present at that zone, where unit-1 engages two Zombie Hordes with Unit-4's support. As for Unit-2, we believe they got pinned down by the third Zombie Horde."

"And while we're talking, I believe that the fourth Zombie Horde is approaching Unit-1 and Unit-4. The current Unit-3 is positioned furthest away but closer to you." Alex calmly briefed Zhang Tianci about their current status.

"Also, we've sent out two vanguards teams to provide support, but their expected arrival time is over 12 minutes. Right now, Unit-2's team leader is out of communication. The remaining four soldier's status is unknown but readable in Luna Sensor."

"What do you think?" Alex asked for Zhang Tianci's opinion after he finished telling what he had to say.

The display on Alex's tablet computer changed while he spoke with Zhang Tianci. This allowed both of them to study and coordinate according to the situation together. The precise map also shows the distance between each team and the current status reading from their Luna Device.

Based on the display, the two supporting vanguards were indeed over ten minutes away from both battlefields. As for the unit-3 position, they're indeed closer to Zhang Tianci. This is precisely why Alex left them unmoved for now, to see what Zhang Qin Feng's trusted clone decided to do.

"Can you give us a hand, Tianci?" Alex asked the same question a second time.

"Of course. Be on our way. Just wait for our return." Zhang Tianci replied.

The sound of and the engine was roaring can be heard from Zhang Tianci's side. It seems he was controlling the APV while he was in a meeting with Alex. Such a thing was not something Alex could do, even if he went for another modification.

"Alright. I'll leave everyone's safety in your hand, Tianci. Bring all of them back for me, please." Alex said.

Their conversation stopped here.

While on the map, Zhang Tianci's coordinate seems to be moving faster than usual, as it was a few minutes away from meeting up with unit-3.

-----

"Stay dead right where you are!" a soldier yelled while he pulled his trigger. The powerful bullets fired from his rifle mowed down several zombies chasing after them, but it was far from enough.

His effort is like a pointless struggle in front of the Zombies Horde. With several zombies down, it was quickly replaced with twice the number.

The only good news here was no Tyrants were seen around them. If a few are coming along in this pursuit, they would likely be destroyed in mere minutes.

"Preserve your energy instead of yelling pointlessly. What is our team leader's condition right now?" another soldier asked.

His question was pointed at the two soldiers running in the front. Both of them were carrying their team leader in their tryst to escape from the Zombies Horde.

"Still unconscious. We've stopped the bleeding, but it seems that the team leader was sedated or somewhat. Else, he couldn't faint without reason." said one of the two soldiers carrying the team leader.

"None of us here are researchers, so those explanations should wait until we're back to the base. For now, let's try our best to stay alive until the support comes. I'm sure the Operation Leader won't leave us out here to protect ourselves." said the calmer soldier amongst them.

But not everyone shared the same positivity he does.

Furthermore, the zombies that chased them weren't regular virus carriers either. Their movement might be just slightly better than the common-type zombies going through a rigor mortis, but that was not enough to give them a problem.

What was worst here was the weird-looking biology weapon latching on their arms and shoulders. It was precisely due to this oddity that the team leader fell as a victim of the attack. But weirdly, the attack from the mutated parts doesn't seem to be infectious.

Or else, they would be forced to put down their leader even before reaching the operation base.

*Bzzt… Bzzt…*

The Luna Device on their wrist buzzed nonstop, but not a single meaning from all the noise was successfully conveyed to the team.

"We have to make sure to return to the base ASAP. The Base Leader must be briefed about this weird thing they had on the zombies…" said the calm soldier.
