Chapter 39: Helpless

Lu Huai quickly walked out of the hospital. He didn't know why he was angry. When Pei Xin handed him the money, it looked like she calculated every debt between them. It was as if she was in a hurry to get rid of him and not owe him anything.

Ever since he was young, Lu Huai learned how to conceal his emotions well. However, this was the first time he couldn't suppress his emotions. This made Lu Huai furious.

"CEO Lu..."

Annie wanted to greet Lu Huai when she saw him, but he brushed past her without even looking up.

Annie shrugged and didn't mind the behavior. "What a strange man."

"Officer Annie, let's go."

Although Pei Xin had told Ling Jin over the phone that he was fine, his heart was still not at ease. He knew that he would only be at ease after seeing the child.

"I'm sorry, keep walking."

Annie knew that he was anxious, so she hastened her pace.

The reason why the two of them were together was that Pei Xin was so caught up in the issue that she forgot to call Ling Jin.

When Ling Jin returned home from work, the house was pitch black. Pei Xin and Ling Lin were not around, and he instantly thought of the worst-case scenario.

He knew that if Pei Xin brought Ling Lin out, she would leave a note to tell him. Therefore, he searched the surroundings for a while and chose to call the police when he couldn't find the pair.

However, before the 48-hour mark, there was no way they would file a case for him. Then, he remembered having Annie's number, so he quickly found her number and called her.

Annie accompanied him to search the surrounding area, but they didn't find anything. Just as they were about to go to the surveillance cameras in the surrounding area, Pei Xin called.

When Ling Jin entered the ward, he saw Ling Lin lying on the hospital bed. He was still unconscious. His head was wrapped in a thick layer of gauze, and there were many scratches around his body.

It was hard to see Ling Lin like this, it felt as though Ling Jin's heart was about to break.

"Which b*stard did it? Was it Lu Li? I'll kill him!" Ling Jin could only think of Lu Li as an enemy who hated this family.

"S-stop!" Pei Xin quickly blocked the entrance. "They've already been punished. Don't be rash. If anything happens to you, what will happen to Lin Lin and me?"

"That is wise, using violence to deal with violence is not a smart way. Even if you can kill Lu Li, I will arrest you first. Do you want them to end up alone?"

Annie, who came along with them, also spoke up.

"Then can you catch them?"

Ling Jin's eyes were red. He looked at Annie for a while before taking a deep breath. His back seemed to have shrunk as he looked at Annie with a pleading look in his eyes.

"I don't know. If it were me, I would arrest him and bring him to justice immediately. As you know, the Lu family won't let this matter pass that easily. I'm not sure if it will be like last time."

The last glimmer of light in Ling Jin's eyes had also disappeared. His sister had done nothing and had to suffer in prison for the past five years. Even his nephew had been tortured to such a state. Why do bad people keep getting away with such crimes? How will they ever find justice?

Pei Xin looked at Ling Jin's back. That man looked so helpless. She walked up slowly and placed her hand on Ling Jin's shoulder. "I didn't stay idle this time. I strangled the person who hurt Ling Lin. I made her breathless and watched her beg for mercy. I watched when her eyes slowly rolled back.."

Ling Jin turned his head to look at Pei Xin's face in shock. He was afraid that his sister would do something out of line.

"Don't worry, I didn't kill her. I can't let my son be an orphan, or for my brother to lose his sister. We can't deal with them now, but we can't always be on the short end of the stick. It's never too late to take revenge, right?"

Ling Jin was shocked by Pei Xin's growth. She used to be a little lamb that was at the mercy of others, but in just a few days, she had grown into a wolf. She knew how to avoid the edge, how to endure, and how to resist.

Annie listened to their conversation and couldn't help but gasp at their plight. There were times when she felt helpless for not being able to meddle. Otherwise, she would have personally killed that b*stard Lu Li.

"Why don't you guys move to another city?"
