1567 Sleep Under the Bridge
Qiao Mei had a headache just thinking about all these things and she started to throw up into the trash can again. Li Gui was so busy taking care of Qiao Mei that she did not have the energy to care about Qiao Yu.
When Li Gui saw that Qiao Mei was feeling sleepy, she immediately chased Qiao Yu out of the room.
“Sister-in-law! Just let me stay here! Look at how uncomfortable Qiao Mei is and how busy you are! I can do housework for you! I can also help you cook and take care of the children. I can also take care of Uncle Qiao! I can do anything you want me to do! I really have nowhere to stay!” Qiao Yu said pitifully.
If Qiao Qiang saw Qiao Yu, he would probably fall sick from anger. Li Gui did not dare to let Qiao Yu appear in front of Qiao Qiang.
“Go and find a guest house. There are plenty of places for you to stay,” Li Gui said.
“I don’t have a permit to be here… I sneaked into the capital… I can’t go to a guest house! They won’t allow me to stay there,” Qiao Yu said.
Li Gui did not believe her. Even if she had no permit, she could still find a place to spend the night. It was summer now and not winter. She would not freeze to death even if she slept under the bridge for a night!
“There are hotels which don’t need you to check your permit. Just go to any one of those. Go quickly before they close for the night,” Li Gui said impatiently.
“I don’t have any money… Those places are very expensive and I don’t have that much money to stay there! My parents took all my money,” Qiao Yu said as she grabbed the corner of Li Gui’s clothes tightly.
Li Gui sighed resignedly and Qiao Yu thought that Li Gui was going to let her in. Unexpectedly, Li Gui only said, “How much money do you have? Show it to me.”
She had more than 20 dollars stashed away. This was all the money she had painstakingly saved up. Before she completed this task, the Du family would not give her a single cent.
“I… I only have five dollars left…” Qiao Yu said as she took out the money from her pocket. She had sewn the rest of the money into her clothes.
Li Gui knew that Qiao Yu definitely had more than that and wanted to continue arguing with Qiao Yu, but Qiao Mei started to throw up again in the room. Li Gui really did not have any more time to haggle with Qiao Yu, so she took out 10 dollars from her pocket and stuffed it into Qiao Yu’s hand.
“Take the money and leave. Head back there tomorrow. We don’t need your help here!” With that, Li Gui closed the door and went back to take care of Qiao Mei.
Using the vines, Qiao Mei could see everything that happened at the door clearly. Li Gui was no longer the same person she used to be, one who felt sorry for any Tom, Dick or Harry by the roadside. In the past year, she had met all kinds of people while doing business and had become more wily.
All business people were profiteers. Everyone tested one another’s limits in order to obtain the greatest benefits. From being deceived by others in the beginning until being able to deal with those people with ease now, Li Gui had paid a huge price for the lessons learnt.
“She has left?” Qiao Mei asked weakly.
“I don’t know. I only chased her out of the door and didn’t see where she went. It’s such a warm night and she won’t die even if she stays out for the entire night. Don’t worry about her. Come, eat some porridge and then sleep for a while,” Li Gui said worriedly.
“She can go wherever she wants,” Qiao Mei said weakly as she closed her eyes.
“I think I’d better ask Xia Zhe to come back,” Li Gui said worriedly.
If Qiao Mei died, the rest of them would also lose their will to live. However, only Qiao Mei and Xia Zhe could make any decision regarding their child.
In the wee hours of the morning, Qiao Mei started to throw up again. It was a really tortuous night for her.
