Chapter 19: Goodbyes

The day's started to go by as quickly as the ones before it. The past couple days have been great for me overall.

My relationship with my mother has been good, although we don't converse all the time, the conversations we do have make me happy.

My body has also fully recovered from the surgery, I no longer feel any residing pain and I'm back to my peak condition. All of this was done before the deadline and I decided to go through with the offer.

This opportunity was simply too good, being able to witness almost every race on this planet as well as residing in the Fallen Empire sounded like a fairy tale.

I knew I had a job to do as well, considering that I'll be joining the Volestian military that means I'll have to fight in the war against the Elves.

Hopefully I'm able to do something where a war wouldn't be needed, but I'm only one person. There is only so much I can do alone, so I should be focusing on befriending some Elves which by itself is a tall order.

Humans and Elves are quite racist to one another, the hate has been there for hundreds of years. I believe this academy is going to attempt to mend relationships or drive them further away.

I felt like I had a role in this operation, my confidence in espionage is high and I have plenty of experience under my belt. If this was a combat operation then I would be a bad choice, but the role of attaining information is a different story.

My mother and I were currently sitting on the couch waiting for the VIA agents to show up. I had a backpack on that had all of my belongings in it, all it contained was clothes and my hygiene products.

"Azrail I forgot to mention this but when talking to anyone try to raise your voice in a friendly manner." My mother told me which I didn't really understand what she meant.

"What's wrong with my voice? I understand my face being a problem, but I thought I had a normal tone?" I questioned her, she looked at me with a blank expression then let out a little sigh.

"....Your voice is terrifying honey; your face simply adds to that. I won't tell you to smile because even that makes everything worse. Just try to sound happy when talking to someone since not everyone judges a book by its cover."

"Okay..." I said in a defeated tone, I honestly thought my voice was good. Now I have to worry about how I sound like to people.

"Thud Thud Thud"

The sound of knocking could be heard by the front door, I immediately got up with my backpack on and started to head over.

Opening the door, I saw both men that were here a week ago. Noticing the backpack on me Luke decided to ask the obvious question.

"Have you decided on if you are going to attend the academy or not Azrail?"

"...Yes I will be going." My face was completely plain, I was just staring at the idiot who asked the obvious question.

"Perfect! I'm happy you decided to do this, well then once you're done saying goodbye to your mother hop in our car." Luke stated as he and Samual started to head back to their black SUV.

I looked over to my mother and gave her a hug. She was a bit surprised, but hugged me back nonetheless.

"Love you, I will see you once I get back. I don't know when that is, but I will come." I said to her trying to bring the point home of me returning to her.

"I love you too honey, just make sure you're safe and don't force yourself to do anything. This home and I will always be here for you." She said as tears started to move down her face.

This did pain my heart, but moving on is a part of life. My childhood could be said to be nonexistent, but there was no point in crying over spilt milk.

We separated from one another and I started to walk over to the VIA agent's car. Not once did I look back, fearing that I would enter an uncontrollable emotional state.

I did not like my emotions being out of check when I was with strangers. I didn't care that these two were VIA agents, although they might be good people, trust would have to be built for something like that to occur.

I opened the car door and took a seat in the back. Both men were in front of me with Luke being the driver and Samual was in the passenger seat.

Without wasting any time Luke decided to start driving while Samual explained my situation.

"We will be going to our headquarters and that's where you'll be residing until you leave for the academy. Will be giving you a rundown for what information you'll be attaining, as well as our agents training you to hone in the skills you need for the task."

"How hard do you think some of the tasks will be? Also, what type of risk am I taking to obtain some of the information?"

"For your first year almost no risk will be involved, this year you will only be trying to figure out your surroundings as well as building a foundation of trust amongst the student body." Samual said then took a little pause for his next sentence.

"Your second and third year however may be different. Depending on what you can attain your first year will decide how you will be moving forward. If you're skilled enough we may have you end up taking risks that might bring you consequences."

"What are these consequences you're talking about?"

"Something as simple as getting suspended or expelled. Don't worry we won't have you trying anything that can get something worse than that, after all we want a good relationship with the Fallen Empire considering we have enough enemies as it is."

'If that is the biggest consequence then there's no issues with this deal. Getting expelled would suck, but I merely have to be good enough to not get caught.' I thought to myself while excitement started to build for this journey.
